[newbie] File associations

2004-10-30 Thread Trygve Seljeflot
Can anybody help ?

Brosing files w/Konqueror as root I right-clicked on on a .cfg file to set
default acton to always open w/kedit.
After that, when I click on a directory (as root) I get an error message
saying that KDEinit could not launch kedit.
Where is the right placeto correct this stupid mistake ?
Looking thru System/Configuration/KDE/Components/File associations does'nt
help.
b.t.w. Konqueror as user works as normal.
I'm running 10.1 CE

Are you sure? That's where I'd look. IIRC the last time someone had a
similar problem the solution was there under 'inode'.

[newbie] File Associations lost

2004-04-22 Thread Ian MacGregor
I installed Mandrake 10.0 Official Edition, on a PII 450Mhz., yesterday, and,
I must say, it's great - so far. Only one little annoyance:
I have my file associations tweaked just the way I want them, and I realise
that I want/need to install some software from the CD's using rpmdrake. When
I am finished installing, I realise that my file associations have been
altered. This happens every time I install somethng from the CD's.
So, three questions:

1. Why does this happen?
2. How can I prevent it? If I can't, is there a config file somewhere that I
can copy (before install) and restore (after install) to get my file
association back without having to use the control centre?
3. Am I the only one experiencing this little annoyance?

If there were a file containing the file associations/settings, I suppose I
could create a bash script to restore my file associations after I install
anything - this would be much easier. I found that I like bash scripts -
after creating one that will back-up all my personal file in a matter of
seconds.

Thank you in advance for any help,
Ian MacGregor

That's OK. If enough people complain, maybe someone will do something about
the problem.

PS: I only noticed it in KDE, I think it is related to the fact that
menus are updated when installing a new software. I usually use XFCE4
with ROX as my file manager and this doesn't happen...

Same for me, too, I wish to cause x11amp to
play mp3 files rather than kmp3 or that other one.

On Mon, 27 Mar 2000, Pittman, Merle mewed:
Anyone know how to change file associations. You know in KDE it sets a
default app with a file type and loads it in that app on a file click.
Well, I want to change the default app for PDF files to Acroread. It ia
 currently XPDF and GS.

Re: [newbie] File Associations in KDE

1999-05-05 Thread Idris Samawi Hamid

One way to do this:
Run KDEAppFinder so that KDE finds the Adobe Reader. Then add the Adobe Reader to
the Panel. Click with the right mouse button on the panel button for Adobe, then
click "Properties". Go to the execute tab, where you can now add the pdf-type
from the right column to the left column. If you like, click on the icon so that
you can also change the default icon to, say, the Acrobat symbol. Click "OK".
When opening a pdf file from kfm, you can now click the right button to choose
whether you want Kghostview or Adobe to open it. To make kfm automatically select
the reader, you may have to follow the same procedure with kghostview, only
deselct the pdf-type from the right column in the "execute" tab of "properties".
Then you can delete either from the panel if you like. I am sure that there is an
easier/better way but this will work.

Interestingly, when I installed the latest beta of Adobe Reader for Linux, the
installation script automatically associated *.pdf files with the reader.
