Hi Matt,
I haven't, but, I bet you can find the answer in http://www.linmodems.org, and
even better if you look into their list's archives. Myself, I found the
solution there with my Agere System soft modem.

For internal (winmodems) try
http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/MoDems

But if you are going to replace anyway, go for an external one. All
external modems are hardware modems, whereas few internal ones are.
You should have no trouble with any make of external one.

Buy a hardware controlled modem, they work well in both linux and windblows.

[newbie] Modem Question

2003-02-18 Thread Matt Harrison
Hi All,
Just a quick question on my modem for my laptop. It is detected by
Mandrake (I'm using 9.0) as PCTEL 2304 WT V.92 MDC Modem. When my
computer boots into Linux, I get a message saying that Device at 0:1f:6
is unavailable due to resource confliction and looking at my hardware
list in the control center that device would be my integrated modem. I
was wondering what, if anything, I have to do to resolve this
confliction and if this modem is supported by Linux at all. Any help is
appreciated, even if nothing can be done. Thanks in advance.

First thing to do is to look at the actual specs on your modem - the
chipset might be PCTEL, but there might be another controlling chip on
board - either which, there are many drivers (3d party) that you might
be able to give a go at - one place to check would be at:
http://www.linmodems.org/

You might not be able to locate a Mandrake specific package (RPM), but
you might be able to get some source code to compile - which can be
tricky, but most integrated modems - either Rockwell or PCTel can be
made to work - and sometimes made to work better under linux than under
Windows.

See what kind of specs you can dig up on the modem, check the site
above, get all the possible details together that you can, then see
where we can go from there!

Cheers!

I convinced a friend of mine to try out mdk9 but she had an HSF modem
and couldn't afford to replace it. Googled the link to Marc Boucher's
driver for the HSF moden I installed the driver and ran hsfconfig to
set the country code etc but kpp could not find the device . simple
solution was to make a link in /dev/ to ttySHSF0 and run kpp again
this worked like a charm... Works really well and saves going to
the added expense of buying a 'hardware' modem.
It's often difficult to convince people to try 'nix' if they have to
spend money replacing hardware that works (tongue in cheek) with the
offerings form M$. It was a useful exercise in demonstrating how
flexible linux is and how you can do it yourself to fix problems.

How do I install that? I'm used to the simple and pleasurable clicking on

Do you know whether your PCI modem is software controlled or hardware
controlled, some internel modems are hardware controlled, but mostly
they are
so called winmodems, in which case you will have to find a driver.

try, http://www.linmodems.org/

but if you can possibly afford it, they are not that expensive , buy
yourself
a nice hardware controlled (chipset) modem they don't need software and
all you have to do is to get the OS to recognise it's there and it will
work whether in Linux or windblows.

Hi, Richard. First thing is, don't panic. We've all been there and felt
utterly helpless, but this list is brilliant in helping you get going. You
need to keep calm, though, and try to be as precise as possible in describing
problems and what happens.

My modem is Conexant Softk56 PCI so I gather I go here

If you installed Mandrake 9.0 you already have that kernel version installed.

I'm used to the simple and pleasurable
clicking on an upgrade in windows and letting it self install, but when I
clicked on this, it just asked me what to open it with, argh.

When I installed it, it would find that I had some other type of modem,
Eth(something) and would show I had an LAN whatever. I have no idea what
 any of that is.

An entry of Eth0 or similar would mean your LAN connection - you are
connected to a network?

Someone suggested I disable that then my modem will show
up, but as I don't know what it is and it all came with my computer, I have
no idea how to do that, so I'd rather stay away from that.

You will find Mandrake Control Centre great for setting things up. On the
bottom bar you should have an icon like a black screen with a spanner across
it? Click on that to open up MCC. Assuming that you have a hardware modem,
the wizard there will help you set up with little or no input. If you have a
winmodem it will be a little harder, and someone else will advise you on
that.

Try this first, and come back if you need more help.

Anne

so you can boot into Mandrake and save the file to your personal

Re: [newbie] modem question. not important

2001-09-15 Thread ddcharles

Hi,

The init strings sent to the modem when you start a connection ALSO set
the modem speaker volume. If you are using mdk8 and kde with the kde
internet dialer, then if you press on setup, and go to the device tab, you
will see a slider for volume level. move it to the right and you should
hear the sounds that you grew accustomed to in windows.

In linux the modem is completely silent, though it contects fine and works
 better. Any reason for this.?
 Thanks

Re: [newbie] Modem Question

2000-12-21 Thread s

I have a pci 3Com/USRobotics 56K FaxModem model 5610 on one computer and I
got it to work with setserial. I looked in the KDE System Control
Communications Control to get the port and irq. All the traditional places
like /proc/pci didn't help much, it was listed there but very vague (unknown
device) and since my sound card was pci and video card is agp (it is listed
in some places as pci).
But if you're going to buy a new one, Herman's suggestion to get an isa is a
good one. I have an isa SupraExpress on this other machine and sndconfig set
it up when it did the isa soundcard. Still had to setserial, but isapnp dump
told me which port and irq.

Re: [newbie] Modem Question!?

For me the best modem for Linux is an external serial port modem. I am
using a 3com/usr which costs a bit more but is well worth it. Has worked
with everything from SCO, NT, Solaris, Linux of all types.

Proper external modems are much eaiser to
configure than ISA 3COM=best
(protect your computer from lightning
strikes on phone lines too..)

I got a 2nd hand 33.6 Dynalink for about
US$ 30.00 (ripped off!) that isn't much
slower than my 56k winmodem is in W98. I'd
get a 3COM one, but it was that or a Voodoo3!

Get an external. I suggest USR faxmodem 56k V.90 or Courier V.Everything.
This second one is a bit pricier, though.

If my reply to your 1st question didn't help,
people swear by 3com/U.S. Robotics *external*
modems.

You should be able to get the ISA one going though.
