I'm running ARK on KDE, and it seems to handle .rar very well.

I havent actually tried to create a rar archive with it yet, but I know it
works ok for opening!

You'll need to cp, link or rename the binary first.

I just 'cp /usr/bin/unrar /usr/bin/rar'

Paul,

You can also try http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlinux-3.3.0.tar.gz . The
guys at rarlabs have a linux command line version that works well with
.rar files. The website indicates it's a trial version, but you could
say that I'm still trying it out. If that doesn't help, WinRAR works
well with wine.

The fully functional RAR program is available from Vincent Danen's
site. He has the rpm available for multiple versions of Mandrake, for

On www.rpmfind.net you can find more up-to-date packages of rar (version
3.3). The problem is that they are not specifically designed for Mandrake,
so I don't know if they will work correctly. Anyway as far as I know this
site is the best to get any sort of rpm.

The best place to get rar is from Vincent Danen's excellent site:

http://www.rpmhelp.net/

Where you can get the rar rpm for all relatively recent versions of
Mandrake, plus qmail rpms, plus a few other rpms that are hard to find
elsewhere.

Rar is one of the best compressor/archiver programs that there is.

Posters don't always use a .rar file, so sometimes you might see a post
with

file.rar
file.r00
file.r01
.
file.r59

and other times you'll see

file.part01.rar
file.part02.rar
.
file.part59.rar

For the latter, unrar with

unrar e file.part01.rar

In the directory you have all the .rar's in run

'unrar e filename.part01.rar'Rar will start with the first
one and then consequetively extract all the rest. If you're not
missing any parts.

Another way is to use file-roller. It looks for 'rar' tho.
So first you must rename, copy, or link /usr/bin/unrar
to /usr/bin/rar. Then just click on part01.rar in a file manager
and file-roller will start. Then choose Action | Extract (or
somethin like that) from the toolbar.

I find it easier and quicker to use the CL.

Try extracting the part01.rar file. Not all archives have a single main rar
file, some start at part01.rar and end at part58.rar.

I found par2, and I also have unrar, but what to do in a situation where
I have all the *.partNN.rar files - like from part01.rar to part59.rar,
but no main.rar file? I have pars, but doing par2 r
just goes through all the files I have and then displays "no repair is
necessary". Meanwhile, I still don't have the main rar file, and rar
won't extract anything.

What to do, other than wait for someone more experienced to post the
file and do this all over again?

For example,

par2repair somefile.PAR2

I think that the algorithm for rar is encumbered by IP, so you are not likely
to find open source utilities for compression.

You don't need to buy anyting if you are un-raring. The licence is only

You don't need to buy rar. Just download it and install it. Case closed.

Gay shlafen: Yiddish for "go to sleep".

Now doesn't "gay shlafen" have a softer, more soothing sound than the
harsh, staccato "go to sleep"? Listen to the difference:
"Go to sleep, you little wretch!" ... "Gay shlafen, darling."
Obvious, isn't it?
Clearly the best thing you can do for you children is to start
speaking Yiddish right now and never speak another word of English as
long as you live. This will, of course, entail teaching Yiddish to all
your friends, business associates, the people at the supermarket, and
so on, but that's just the point. It has to start with committed
individuals and then grow
Some minor adjustments will have to be made, of course: those
signs written in what look like Yiddish letters won't be funny when
everything is written in Yiddish. And we'll have to start driving on
the left side of the road so we won't be reading the street signs
backwards. But is that too high a price to pay for world peace?
I think not, my friend, I think not.

[newbie] rar files

2003-07-08 Thread Curt Tresenriter
I decided I want to play with Deb, but need to deal with a rar file to
get started.
Do I need to buy rar or is there another way to decompress the file?
Looked like mc would do it but when I try to open the file an error
tells me it can't find /user/share/mc/extfs/unrar: line 27: rar: command
not found.

In case it matters the extfs throws me too - I'm using Reiser fs

True. I updated the rpmhelp.net rpm (well, once Vincent uploads it).
In the meantime you can get it from ftp.coxcentral.com/pub/rpms if you
want it.

Here's the tarball from RAR themselves:

  http://www.rarlab.com/rar/rarlinux-3.1.1.tar.gz

It's a much newer version.

Rar is not open source, so not in the distrib. Here's a link to an .rpm
of it though (v2.8):
