[newbie] service configuration problem **THIRD** REQUEST

2005-01-18 Thread Andy Yankovich
SORRY IF THIS TYPE OF REQUEST TO NEWBIE LIST BRAKES SOME RULE, BUT
I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO TURN NEXT.

I CAN NO LONGER LOG ON TO MDK ON-LINE NOR MDK EXPERT. MANDRAKE ON
LINE HAS GIVEN ME THREE DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS AND TELLS ME TO DROP
THE UNUSED ACCOUNTS BUT I AM NOT ABLE TO ON THEIR SITE.

I AM ABLE TO LOG ON TO MDK CLUB.

THE SCREEN RESOLUTION CHANGES I WAS ABLE TO MAKE (please see
forwarded messages below) USING
star/preferences/control-center/peripherals/display/screen size/
SAYS IT ADJUSTS ONLY NEW APPLICATIONS. 'OLDER' APPLICATIONS ,
SUCH AS THE TOOLBARS AT TOP OF SCREENS AND DESKTOP, AND SOME
OTHER FUNCTIONS, ARE VIRTUALLY UNREADABLE BECAUSE FONTS ARE SO
SMALL..

I AM RUNNING 10.1 PURCHASED FROM MDK STORE ON AN i626 MACHINE AND
USING KDE 3.2.3. THE HOST NAME IN KDE CONTROL CENTER IS
249-234-35-65.tampabay.rr.com. IS THIS WHAT IT SHOULD SAY?

ALSO WHEN i SIGN IN AS ROOT THE SCREEN AT TOP READS KDE su. I
DON'T REMEMBER THE su BEFORE I RE INSTALLED. MAYBE IT WAS THERE.

Any further info you need will be readily given. Even my bank
account numbers. I'm desperate for help.

Andy

An addendum to previous message re font size:

I have been able to adjust fonts/screen resolution for NEW
applications ONLY. How do I permanently adjust PRIOR
applications? I still cannot see what I am typing here. I need
to get this fixed.

Re the applet and system configuration, it still exists. I need
 to resolve that issue also.

Please help OR direct me to another source for help.

Thanks, Andy

Subject: service configuration problem

I tried to click on the red/orange applet with the questionmark
to update my re-installed system. I had previously installed a
10.1 $12.99 set of 6 CDs from Cheapbytes and reinstalled with
the 10.1 Powerpack purchased from MandrakeStore.

In addition to the service config problem, my screen resolution
went all messed up and I can hardly read what I am now typing,
the fonts are so small. I tried to fix it by clicking
star/preferences/control center/peripherals/display/screen
size/1024x768.

Some screens were fixed by most, from desktop to many others were
affected in the reverse manner and fonts got so small it is
almost impossible to read.

Can you help with these two MAJOR problems. If not, must I
reinstall as I did before or must I reformat the Linux part of
Windows C drive?

the error messages from the logs follow:

1:51:34 Computing new updates...

dateListlog=andyyankhost=249 ... 1:51:35  Wrong Action or host

What is the reference to host mean??

Thanks for your help.

Andy

Have you tried the mandrakeclub forums for questions and/or answers?

THE SCREEN RESOLUTION CHANGES I WAS ABLE TO MAKE (please see

SAYS IT ADJUSTS ONLY NEW APPLICATIONS. 'OLDER' APPLICATIONS ,

Since you changed the screen size, Have you adjusted the KDE
fonts, You can adjust the font size in the look and feel section of
the KDE control center, select fonts, click the Adjust all fonts
button or change the sizes to something suitable.
This is my guess anyway.

I AM RUNNING 10.1 PURCHASED FROM MDK STORE ON AN i626 MACHINE AND
USING KDE 3.2.3. THE HOST NAME IN KDE CONTROL CENTER IS
249-234-35-65.tampabay.rr.com. IS THIS WHAT IT SHOULD SAY?
Your hostname was setup from your isp, There was a checkbox in the
Mandrake Control Center that states:
Adjust host name from DHCP address that, if left checked would do
this or may nave been auto-detected when you installed.
.. or you can change this, as root, in the config file in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth0 file by adding this line:
NEEDHOSTNAME=no

You can setup your own hostname.
qouted from Derek Jennings from the archives,
If you want to set your hostname you must do it by setting the line
HOSTNAME=in /etc/sysconfig/network, or by GUI in
MandrakeControlCentreNetworkInternetAccess
restart networking with
'service network restart' or by using the GUI in
MandrakeControlCentreSystemServices
for the new hostname to take effect.

(should add this to the twiki)

ALSO WHEN i SIGN IN AS ROOT THE SCREEN AT TOP READS KDE su. I
DON'T REMEMBER THE su BEFORE I RE INSTALLED. MAYBE IT WAS THERE.
Never heard of this .. Do you login as root into the root
desktop and see this ?
kdesu is how you can run an application as root if you
give the correct root password.

I haven't any experience with Mandrakeonline, But it appears that your
hostname is creating the problem, Being 249-234-35-65.tampabay.rr.com
so if you change the hostname as stated above, this may correct that error.
for example, you could chose: grace.homelinux.net or whatever ..
this should be ok for a homelan or zeroconf setup.

You can also setup your urpmi sources in Mandrake Control Center
under software management, Using updates which, for the first time
run, will ask for a url location to add,
then will open the updates dialog for updates, bug fixes and normal updates.
check your packages and click install.

You can add more sources from Media Manager and take a look at
the Mandrakeclub downloads(tab) mirror-lists(link) for other package
sources to add. I would add distribution(also called Main), contributions
(or contrib) and plf (for stuff that couldn't be added to the Mandrake
distribution for legal reasons.)

Also have a look at the Community wiki for urpmi:
http://mandrake.vmlinuz.ca/bin/view/Main/UsingUrpmi

HTH some ..
((someone please correct me if I've misinterpreted something.))
