Re: [newbie] sis5597
If you want to go cheap and PCI I suggest a S3 Virge DX/GX for about $19 to $39 dollars depending on where you get them. I use them with Linux all the time and they always work fine with SVGA server. Also use S3 Virge MX in my Laptop running RH. I am sure you can make that Sis card work however. I am not the one to provide the answer but I know it has been done. I am so happy, I finally fixed the darn sis server. I kinda cheated, I just went and rename XFCom_SiS to XF86_SVGA in the KDE while running in VGA mode. Thanks for the help, specially Jeanatte and John. Now for another question, how to I configure/install my modem to run on linux. Also when I start linux it gives me to failed messages, one for mounting file systems and the other for... other file systems. How do I fix this? One last thing, how do I make Windows boot first, can't I edit lilo? This is the last: what's a good site for linux learning... one that goes kinda like a book in your opinion. If it's PCI, you can almost be sure you can forget it. In any event, without knowing more about your modem, it'd be hard to tell you. Also when I start linux it gives me to failed messages, one for mounting file systems and the other for... other file systems. How do I fix this? Dunno..what's the EXACT error message? One last thing, how do I make Windows boot first, can't I edit lilo? Yep. If you've got a section at the top of your lilo.conf that says "default=" change this to "windows" or whatever you've got your Windows partition named. If you DON'T have a "default" section, add it as follows: default=label where label=what you've called your Windows setup. Check out http://mandrakeuser.org and http://www.linuxnewbie.org They have many articles and information pointers. I don't know of any that are like a "book". As for the failed mounts, what does your /etc/fstab have in it? "Ernesto Bartels (Yahoo profile)" wrote: I am so happy, I finally fixed the darn sis server. That way if you forget to edit your /etc/lilo.conf or forget to run lilo.conf, you can still boot to your old kernel. You can probably still boot off a rescue disk, edit your /etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo. That *should* fix it. John

I am not the one to provide the answer but I know it has been done. Jeanette S3 Virge DX/GX has had some problems with some implementations. I've got one of those implementations with the problem. Basically the problem (which *should* be fixed in the updated X server -- I just am too lazy to get the latest version G) is that if you go into X, and then exit back to the console, your display is screwed up royally and all you can do is reboot or restart X. As I said, according to Xfree86.org people, it's fixed in a newer implementation of the XF86_SVGA which includes better support for the Virge GX/DX. I personally think that if you want an inexpensive ACCELERATED card, go for a RIVA TNT card. Not the TNT2, just the standard TNT, assuming you have an AGP-slot motherboard. :-) John

On Mon, 27 Dec 1999, you wrote: I haven't had any problems with S3 Virge I have been using everything from RH 5.1 to Mandrake 6.0 with SVGA driver Jeanette Hmm...Ok. I'm using Mandrake 6.0. This Virge GX is manufactured by Aopen. Model number is PT75 Plus II. On the box, it says the chipset is S3 Virge/GX 3D. I'm using the Frame Buffer kernel, since this card apparently requires the Frame Buffer (at least that's what was installed by default.) One other thing... on the box it also says "ENG VER 0B" I'm not sure if that means that this is a second version of the card or if it means something else... In any event, I think I'm going to have to get a Voodoo3 PCI or a TNT PCI, as this motherboard doesn't have any AGP slots (it's a Pentium Pro motherboard.) John

[newbie] sis5597 - thanks Jeanette
I found a driver on SuSE - http://www.suse.de/en/support/xsuse/#sis - and I want to try it out. This is my first time using linux, only things I really know are "shutdown", "Xconfigurator", "xf86config" and "startx". I think I just download and copy the rpm on the place were "Xconfigurator" looks for and type "rpm -i [name]", but I don't want to mess up my pc more than it is. Could someone tell me how I should download and the install the rpm driver that's on suse site (currently running windows98) - think of me as a first time mac user.
