I started menudrake from a terminal (or right click on the K and select Menu Editor). go to MultimediaSoundxmmsGeneral tab. I unchecked Open in a terminal, saved and quit. I was then able to open from the K menu. I went back and found that Open in a terminal had somehow been checked again, but the menu still works, so I have no idea what happened. Maybe this doesn't quite fit, but being one that doesn't trust default installations, I tend to check search paths and the likes - for Mandrake v9, I went and edited the /etc/profile and included KDEDIR='/usr' export KDEDIR as well as editing my /etc/ld.so.conf For whatever reason, after the initial installation, and after making those simple modifications, my KDE ran slightly better without any major delays in shortcuts or what have you. Re: [newbie] starting xmms from menu
In reply to T's mail, d.d. Mon, 4 Nov 2002 08:12:36 -0800 (PST): It seems that xmms is accessed wrongly. The menu probably points to a non-existing location. In a term type which xmms (here it is /usr/bin/xmms) and note the path to it. If you can, edit the menu and check if xmms is called in the same place. Re: [newbie] starting xmms from menu
The command called upon from the menu is soundwrapper xmms whereas what you're typing from the commandline is probably just xmms. I don't know what soundwrapper does, but I imagine if you remove that from the menu entry using menudrake, it'll fix the problem. This isn't a great solution.
