[newbie] Strange messages on boot...

2000-10-11 Thread Scott Allan

Hi -

I am getting the following entries in /var/log/messages and would
appreciate any insight as to what they mean; or directions on where to go
for more info :)

Oct 10 20:58:47 mozz sysctl: error: 'net.ipv4.tcp_timestamp' is an unknown
key

Oct 10 20:59:03 mozz modprobe: Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/modules.dep

Oct 10 20:59:04 mozz ifup: SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

Thanks!

[newbie] Strange messages in my log files.

1999-12-19 Thread Eric L. Damron

I found this in my /var/log/messages log:

kernel: ip_masq_ftp OUT: got PASV

I find no indication that anything was transfered in the
xferlog file.

This is on a home server and I know for a fact that my family
and I haven't been using FTP. In fact no one was logged on at the time of
the message. Could this be an indication that someone is using my server
as a WAREZ site?

Thanks.

If it wasn't you that initiated the ftp connection, you need to fix your
firewall to only allow masq connections on the internal device..

[newbie] strange messages (and question)

1999-08-25 Thread Radek Dobias

I got a returned message on my post...

By the way, I'm just wondering. What's exactly the difference between KDE
(or GNOME) and X-Windows. Or is KDE just a GUI for X-Windows?

You've got it, KDE is a GUI for the X Window System.

X provides a method for putting pictures onto the screen (or your
cube-neighbor's screen if that's your thing!), it's up to someone else
what those "things" look like.

Window managers typically paint the borders, root menus, and control
resizing and moving of windows.

Applications decide what they look like inside the window based on the
GUI libraries that they use -- Motif, Xlib, Athena, OpenLook, Gtk, Qt,
etc.

Desktop environments like CDE, KDE, and Gnome are trying to standardize
a complete set of applications so that they look like they belong
together. It's a rather nice change from the mishmash of application
"looks" that we used to have.

Compare xman to Netscape to kpp to Gimp and you'll see the difference
that a GUI library can make!

The listserver might have hiccupped. I got them too, although I also
saw my original e-mails come through in the normal list traffic. I
don't think it's anything for the list users to worry about. The people
at Mandrake may or may not be concerned however.

Yup, and the freak mail daemon reformats them as HTML mail! :)

If the mailing list administrators could remove subscribers at

DEFINATELY!!! I have just emailed one of the Mandrake guys on the list
(Axalon) in the hopes that he can pass the problem along to the Majordomo
manager and get the offending user cut off or at least suspended until such
time as the user gets the problem fixed. :-)
