[newbie] USB Camera

2004-11-05 Thread Lee Wiggers
Hi List,

When I plug in my Sony 717 camera the first time, it automounts as
/mnt/camera and when I unplug it, several hours later it unmounts.

Then when I plug it back in, it does not mount. I can go to mcc and
mount anything config screens and it then mounts without me doing
anything else.

This only rates as a small pita, but I'm curious.

mdk 9.2

Any ideas?

Lee

If an icon pops up, what happens if you right-click it and choose
unmount ?

Please post your /etc/fstab file, maybe we can find something.

Needs some weeding out, but works except mnt/unmount of the camera.

Lee, not that I can explain what is going on, but I remember from my
9.2 days, that supermount was not 100% trustworthy. IIRC setting
it to auto instead worked for me. You could try , as root :

supermount -i disable

and reverse that with supermount -i enable, if it doesn't work
either.

Thanks Kaj

I'll try that just for sport. Haven't broken the 9.2 box recently,
anyway.

[newbie] USB Camera problems - Almost solved

2004-11-04 Thread Kaj Haulrich
Just want to let you know that Mandrake just added a lot of updated
packages for 10.1 Official. After installing those my Olympus
C740UZ (with a xD card) works just like it did in 10.0 : perfectly.

When plugging in the camera, an icon pops up (in KDE) with a label
showing the correct model. Works just like any other mass storage
device.

Funny thing is, gtkam pops up as well but doesn't recognize the
camera, - neither does digikam. Never mind.

Downside is, even after unmounting the camera, my USB scanner isn't
recognized any more. Only a full reboot gets it back.

But at least the CPU doesn't go bezerk anymore..

Life is good. Have a nice week-end, all

[newbie] USB camera with MDK

2003-03-17 Thread Kesav Tadimeti
HI all,
I need to record a video. One normally does this with a Video camcorder,
then capture the video from the tape to the computer using a software
program. I want to avoid the investment that goes into this.

I would like to know if I can use a USB web camera to capture the video and
simultaneously convert to a computer file. Does Mandrake Linux support this?
DO I need a TV Tuner card for this? I am a total newbie to all things
related to Multimedia and USB. So please bear with my ignorance.

With thanks warm regards
Keshav

Police: Good evening, are you the host?
Host: No.
Police: We've been getting complaints about this party.
Host: About the drugs?
Police: No.
Host: About the guns, then? Is somebody complaining about the guns?
Police: No, the noise.
Host: Oh, the noise. Well that makes sense because there are no guns
or drugs here. (An enormous explosion is heard in the
background.) Or fireworks. Who's complaining about the noise?
The neighbors?
Police: No, the neighbors fled inland hours ago. Most of the recent
complaints have come from Pittsburgh. Do you think you could
ask the host to quiet things down?
Host: No Problem. (At this point, a Volkswagon bug with primitive
religious symbols drawn on the doors emerges from the living
room and roars down the hall, past the police and onto the
lawn, where it smashes into a tree. Eight guests tumble out
onto the grass, moaning.) See? Things are starting to wind
down.

I know I didn't give enough info for anyone to take a stab at it. Figure I
only have 12 hours invested in this one...I'm getting better.

8.2 smokes!

I know I have seen the answer to this, but I can't find it in my notes
 anywhere.

I get the error message that says only root can mount /camera, and indeed
root can open it nicely. I changed ownership to lee but still only root
 gets to see the pictures.

 What did I miss?

 TIA

If I remember correctly, you have to add the usb group to your users.
Otherwise they don't have any rights
