Re: [newbie] DNS issue?
Well according to their record under Internic, their DNS servers are 207.127.126.41 and 207.217.77.42 and 209.179.179.19. These are reversed to ns1.earthlink.net, ns2.earthlink.net and ns4.earthlink.net. The ones in Paul's message i get rns1.earthlink.net, rns2.earthlink.net, rns3.earthlink.net. -- On Mon, 27 Nov 2000 09:12:19 Dennis Myers wrote: Paul wrote: On Sat, 25 Nov 2000, Tom Brinkman wrote: On Saturday 25 November 2000 11:50 am, Paul wrote: In case you are still having problems: http://help.earthlink.net/techsupport/generic_settings/settings.html: DNS1 207.217.126.81 DNS2 207.217.77.82 or 207.217.120.83 And I don't even use Earthlink ;) Paul If I'd followed your advice, i'd still be tryin to connect :( Which is solid proof that I don't use Earthlink... The point I wanted to get across in this discussion is that the generic "edit resolv.conf and enter the DNS numbers your ISP gave you" is often, but _not always_ correct. I have primary 207.217.77.82 and secondary 207.217.120.83 entered in Kppp. Those numbers are different than the ones EL gave me, and they told me that their DNS numbers vary depending on the number you dial into. Re: [newbie] DNS issue?
not sure brian, but in win you have to set the box to be on a lan and tell it to use dns, i set my win98 box to have the same two dns server entries for my isp as i gave the mandrake box, iirc the place to do this is control panelnetworktcp/ip-network adapterproperties, on the dns tab choose enable and fill in the fields, in the gateway tab i have put the address of my mandrake box as that is the gateway to the net (this might not be necessary but it works for me!) bascule On Saturday 25 November 2000 5:10 pm, you wrote: When I try to use the web, or ping anything by name, it doesn't work. If Mandrake is getting its DNS settings (if it isn't getting them from somewhere else) from the ISP when I dial in, where is it configured to tell it to use the DNS from the ISP, and how do I configure it to pass the DNS resolution back to the 98 PC? Bascule, I use Earthlink as my ISP, and Earthlink provides automatic DNS for the dialup connection. I have never configured DNS on either the Mandrake or the 98 PC's. hmm, really not sure, have you tried giving the win box the mandrake box ip address as dns address? though since i can't imagine the dns server addresses for your isp changing i would try asking them, check their support site if they have one bascule On Saturday 25 November 2000 5:40 pm, you wrote: Bascule, I use Earthlink as my ISP, and Earthlink provides automatic DNS for the dialup connection. RE: [newbie] DNS issue?
Got it. Those DNS addresses are dead. I did however look in the /etc/resolv.conf file and see which DNS servers where being used temporarily by PPP, and then set those as the DNS servers on the 98 box. Thanks for the help everyone. You're in the small % of MickeySoft (AoL/NS) ISP's where the normal "edit your /etc/ insert linux conf file here" DNS advice you almost _always_ hear on this list. _*is BAD WRONG advice*_. . ~~~ Assuming you're using Kppp to connect, enter the DNS numbers ELink gave you for your local access number (they vary depending on which # you connect with, and it's important that you enter primary, then secondary). Linux (Kppp) will then correctly auto configure (see 'man resolver') /etc/options and resolve.conf (the DNS entered here will be diferent than the DNS they give you, it's auto resolved by linux/Kppp on connect). Don't forget that you need to preface your user name with 'EL/' (w/o the 's), and that you need to tell Kppp that this (BullSH+!) ISP uses CHAP. (..at least it hasn't sunk to M$CHAP ;) EL uses Nutscrape/Enterprise, which is owned by AoL, which answers to billy's $$'s. Forget EL's support, it's wrong much more often than right. 'course, if you're like me, it was 'bout the only local dialup I had available ;) Like most Win stuff, they make it easy for winblows, hard for any other OS. I sort'a think it might be billy's doin, JMNSHO ;) If you have a 'honest' ISP availble by local number, you might wanna go with them instead. -- Tom Brinkman [EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay
