Hi,
I have been having issues with the graphical login; ie: it's not working. So
I have been booting into cli and using startx to access my gui apps.
Then, I installed fonts through MCC font installer and now the startx fails
with vnt -n switch not recognized .
I think that this may be the root of my problem. In which file is the vnt
command located? Perhaps removing that switch will solve my graphical grief.
Have you tried GDM instead of KDM? I tried for ages with KDM (very
frustrating), as i find it sexier, but just couldn't get the damn thing
to load me a desktop. GDM has worked perfectly from day one.

If you mean the file to choose between graphic or console, it is
/etc/inittab.

Look for the line:
id:5:initdefault:
and change it to:
id:3:initdefault:

That will boot your PC to console instead of graphic.

Hi Bill,
I believe the file you would be looking for is /etc/inittab, This is the
file that specifies if you boot to the command prompt or a graphical login.
The line your looking for is:
   id:X:initdefault:
where X is the runlevel, 5 would be the graphical login so it should read
id:5:initdefault:
Well, I hope that helps.

RE: [newbie] Graphical Login

1999-07-06 Thread Bill Moshier

Troy - login as root ( or use the su command )
and edit the /etc/inittab file. About 15 lines
down is a line:

id:3:initdefault:

change the 3 to a 5. That changes the starting
run level to 5, which is the one configured to
start the graphical login.

If you want to try it BEFORE editing the inittab
file, when you boot, and have the LILO prompt,
just type:

lilo: linux 5

(add the run level after the boot os selection.) This
will boot linux into run level 5 so you can try it
first. You can also try it from the root command line
command:

init 5

Take care,
Bill

I chose not to start x on bootup while I was configuring my vid card. How
do I configure mandrake to present me with the gui login now? And also,
where in my x86config file can I set it to start x in a certain resolution..
i.e.- 1600x1200/32bpp?

thanks
Troy
