Re: [newbie] mandrake/linux and upgrading cpu+motherboard

2001-11-10 Thread Ed Tharp

windows would have worked if you would have gone into the device mangler,
err... manager and deleted the info about the old MB and stuff, and let
winders discover the new hardware. I have a computer that I have upgraded
since it was a 286/10 with 2.5 megs mem. and a 30 meg hd. copies the files
to new HD upgrade winders since 3.1, (95,98, now ME) runs 2 HDs (c: and
/home on one, d: and / on the other, has had a 486/25(sx), p100/50, a few
amd and Cyrix up to 266, now has a celery 366 winders never had much choking
when I upgraded. as long as I deleted all the old MB info before setting the
drives to a new MB. and Mandrake is MUCH better than winders I do believe.

RE: [newbie] mandrake/linux and upgrading cpu+motherboard

2001-11-10 Thread Franki

I upgraded my mb and cpu from a celery 450 to a athlon 1.4 gig and it worked
flawlessly, just make sure that your hard disks are in the same positions
they were before, ie if it was a primary master before, it must be a primary
master after the upgrade.

i currently have mandrake8.1 running on a very old system (emachines cyrix
mII 366 processor) and was wondering if my existing mandrake installation
will work as is if i upgrade the cpu to say a athlon1600+ (and appropriate
motherboard)? my windows system (sorry) didn't work when i tried this
before b/c the existing windows installation seemed to have been bound to
the specific cpu/motherboard. just wondering if this is also the case with
mandrake8.1/linux systems?

thanks. :)
