xcdroast (newer versions at least) has an option when
run as
root for setup, for entries on users to allow to use

Just as a matter of general interest, there is one thing that EZCD5
and Nero cannot do that Xcdroast can. That is to copy and write to
disc Continuous Multiple Audio Track, that is those audio discs that
have many tracks but NO GAPS. About 20 to 30% of the teenage
popular music market is sold in this catagory these days.

Oops, as soon as I hit 'OK' on the dialog box, I got into X-CD-Roast
with the Setup Button ready for me...

The Device-Scan only shows the CD writer /dev/scd0 [ cdwriter ide 1610]
The Reader says the same, I do have a reader CDROM but it doesn't show up

I don't think it's difficult. Log in to your favourite window manager as
root. Open up xcdroast, go into settings and fill in the settings as
required. I'd go into more detail if I could remember it. It works for me.

I can run xcdroast as root, but not as a user,
I selected all (users) in the setup TABS sections

I also had to change my lilo.conf to get my 2nd (reader) cdrom recognized by
xcdroast.

if I try to run as user;

[gerald@gail gerald]$ xcdroast
CRITICAL: Wrapper /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/xcdrwrap from Version instead

WARNING: Wrapper /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/xcdrwrap configured sharedir
instead of /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98
CRITICAL: Wrapper /usr/lib/xcdroast-0.98/bin/xcdrwrap configured prefixdir
instead of /usr
Aborting...

Also the user can no longer open a cdrom drive.

Just open a terminal window

$ su
password(insert your root password)

# xcdroast

Now you will be at a setup screen--click on the tabs to set up the area
of your hdd where you will burn from, the CDR or CDRW, and maybe a CD
reader, and the users who have access to burn

Click Save
click Quit

now you can use xcdroast from those users you gave access

But remember to set up your security updates and go out there and update
it...  There are updates.

I tried to use for awhile (worked fine in in Mandrake

recognized. I left XCDRoast, opened Gcombust, and was
happily burning a CD in about 5 minutes. Like Kaj
said, there are other front-ends to use. I would still
like to make XCDRoast work but I'm saving working on
it until later when I have more time.

Doesn't matter. My CD-Writer is playing Mozart, Bach and Armstrong quite well

Heather, XCDroast is just one of many front-ends to cdrecord, which is the
app doing the real burning. Others are Gcombust, Kreatecd, Koncd etc. etc...

Those frontends are like mazes, but in the end youll find your way...
Actually, it's not very hard to use cdrecord-commands, take a look at the
man-page

One important thing, though : all IDE burners must be "faked" to the kernel
as SCSI-ones. (And it doesn't harm to do the same thing to the CD-reader as
well). To do that, you must add an append-statement to /etc/lilo.conf, like

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" hdx=ide-scsi devfs=mount "
vga=791
read-only

where x in the append-stanza is your actual IDE-drive, in my example hdc is
the "master" on the second IDE-bus.

Then, save the file, and run "lilo'" as root. Finally, run : cdrecord
--scanbus to see if the burner is there.

Do you have a scsi or IDE writer? I hear from other posters that this makes
a difference. I was thinking of swapping round my scsi and ide drives (I
have a scsi CDRW on another machine) - would this be easier, or was your ide

xcdroast or gcombust just are a little too unintuitive to use fast and

Log out of your user account and log back in as
root. Open up xcdroast and configure. The most complicated thing is when you set
the path. The last tab in configuration is called options or something, but it's
where you set permissions for the user accounts, if you're the only user give
yourself all the permissions and you won't have to go back to root to change
things.

Hi,
I just installed it yesterday myself.
A few tips, please note that I may use the wrong terms as I use it in
Swedish.
Anyway, after starting xcdroast as root go to settings (topmost button
to the left) and the tab about diskdrives (third tab)
Here you should specify a directory for storing the disc images you
create before burning them. Next go to the last tab Users and enter your
normal username and check as many of the options below as you like
before you click "change Non-Root configuration".

After that, you can logout root and start it as a user.

As for details on how to burn and setting up the cd burner, I can't help
you. I have never managed to burn a single disc in Linux ;-)

RE: [newbie] xcdroast help

2002-06-05 Thread Franki

basically, you need to run it as root and set what users can do with
it..

chose
"setup"  then go through and set all the various
elements..

in
particular the "users" select your username and anyone elses that should be able
to use it. and set what they can do...

once
you finish, save the configuration, then go back and run it as your
username..

all
should work fine.

  xcdroast help
  Hi all
  I have just installed xcdroast (together with
  cdrecord). When I try to open it, I get a message telling me to configure
  as root, but no info as to what to configure where or how. I can't seem to get
  to a help file though, and am totally confused :-(( I have looked at various
  howtos on the net, but they are way above me I'm afraid. Can anyone out there
  give me, or point me to and idiots guide (and believe me, in this I am an
  idiot :-))? I am running 8.2, and have a memorex IDE rewriter installed, which
  is being picked up by harddrake OK. it is my only CD drive, and I hate
  having to reboot into windows (gr) to burn CDs. Alternatively, a
  pointer to other CD burner apps that might do the job as well and be easier to
  get going (if such things exist) would do just as well.
  Any help would be gratefully
  received.
  Ta muchly
  Heather
