Re: [newbie] Lixus just crashed

2000-12-16 Thread Tim Holmes

The thing is KDE is quite a beast. I've found that a lot of KDE apps
have died on me. Not so much in KDE, but running KDE apps in Enlightenment
I've seen a large amount of times where those have just died on me. I
use KDE for work for the most part. Mainly because I haven't figured out
how to completely customize FVWM2 to look like it does at work. But I
don't run a lot of those GUI apps. I stopped using Netscape for the most
part. I use Mozilla, which has shown that it's more stable. I've yet to
have that die on me.

But there is a setting that you check when setting up Kppp/Internet Dialer
that says when I log out DO NOT drop the Internet connection. You must
have selected that.

I also stick with command based programs. I use a terminal version of
AIM. No GUI, just pure text, and I run that through Eterm. (CAIM is the
name of the app if you're interested.) I run Mutt for my mail program.
Just type mutt at a command prompt. It should be part of the basic install.

I don't really mess with news readers personally, but if you get rid of
KMail and the CD player, I'm pretty sure you won't have this problem. It's
most likely that your CD player is a KDE program, and it running with KMail,
knocked heads and that's why the X Server crapped on ya!

Personally I'd say drop Netscape, and KMail. But KMail is a pretty good app.
I will say that much. Not going to say to just get rid of KDE because you
may find you just don't like the other Windows Managers. But Netscape out of
the way, and KMail will save you some RAM space and crashing head aches.

 and run Linux 7.2

Has anyone else had an experience like this? Any ideas?

Hmm...Kscd, huh? I'm currently trying to streamline what I'm using as much
as possible...is there a lighter cd playing program loaded in 7.2?

For that matter, as an mp3 player I've been using xmms. I like it, but it
does take some memory (though not nearly as much as kaiman). I've tried
using mpg123, but cant get it to not skip, no matter the buffer size. Has
anyone had success with this program?

Yeah, X crashed on you, not linux, I believe. It happens to me sometimes
if I have a whole bunch of programs opened and decide, what the hell, let
me throw Netscape into the mix. It doesn't happen as much since I started
using Blackbox instead of KDE...I'm hoping it happens a little less when I
get my new 128 meg of RAM to augment my 64...as it is, it happens about
once a week...
