Re: [newbie] Lost X

I doubt that the GF4 will be supported in any way by mdk8.1. Either
grab the driver from nVidia's website and follow directions or upgrade,
either to 8.2 or 9.0.

I just upgraded from a nVidia TNT video card to a nVidia GeForce4 mx420,
and x wont start anymore. I am running Mdk 8.1. I tried running mcc but
there was no entry for GeForce4 in the list and none of the avaiable
entries would work. Previously I was only using the generic nvidia driver.

 Any suggestions?

What you could do is to run XF86Config from the shell and choose ALL
generic settings - this will rewrite your /etc/X11/XF86Config files - at
least giving you a viable XWindows system - then reinstall the drivers
again, make the necessary modifications to the configs as per the card,
then you should be right! (all without reinstalling X)

You mean /tmp ??
There is no so much space to win when deleting this one.
Try:
mkdir /tmp
mkdir /tmp/.X11-unix
mkdir /tmp/.font-unix
and reboot with runlevel 3, startx.
If you mean /my account/tmp,
There is no any file X need.

well just when i thought i was doing ok, i went and deleted the contents
of /tmp on account i had run out of disk space and i thought /tmp's
contents were well, just that, temporary.
obviously not so since now, i cannot boot into X, i can get into
runlevel3, since my friend has my cd i thought i'd try to install
XFree86-4 from files i have on a dos disk but when i run rpm -ivf blah
blah i get the message 'unexpected query source'

 what does this mean?

is there a simpler way to get X back?

 feeling foolish
