Oh I agree that it's silly when the US tries to use strong arm tactics in
other countries. But, remember, if there is a presence of a company in
those countries, they can still take the offending site to court in their
own country.

Anyway, just cause a site is in another country doesn't mean that a company
still couldn't attempt to bully the offending site with a lawsuit.

Good luck getting sites, in, like, say Panama to comply. Too many
countries that would (yeah!) tell the US to get fscked, which would only

hurt the complying US companies. I think the courts know this, the long

countries yet that have nothing to lose by telling the US to get Fscked.

Hey, I know that, you know that, most of the world already knows that -
but it's almost a political statement - as though they're listening to
 the SCO scam...

If CNet was afraid of SCO, they could remove links for downloading full
distros, but that's about it. The average app doesn't have UNIX code and
is not subject of SCO's lawsuit.

I don't think this is a political statement. I think it's a financial
statement.

I would guess that CNet have done this on the advice of their legal
department.
If this is representative of the views in the legal community, how long will

I would think it's two things, possibly three

1.) The linux download section of Download.com rarely if ever gets any
traffic, and all the entries are more than just outdated - a good number
of them were dead links; their partner, ZDnet, has more activity and is
a bit more better suited to linux - so by getting rid of that archive,
they're making for easier work on the staff.

2.) CNet isn't exactly the place where linux freaks go - articles,
specials and the likes are more aimed at either Windows or Macs. It IS a
great archive for Macintosh - and not really a good one for Windows
anymore. They're sagging in popularity as it stands, and CNet's
reputation isn't what it was five years ago.

3.) They're frightened of the SCO scam, and being a Microsoft puppet,
they're pulling it just because they've been told to pull it.

Mate, last time I looked at the linux section on CNet, they still had
the same top five that they had up there for the past two years. I
only surf there to occasionally download software for older Macs that I
work on...

I personally won't download anything from there cuz I rather download
something that's either cutting edge or bleeding edge - for any OS...
