Certainly, with the majority of my cds the sound does just seem to be
distributed, but as I said, there are a couple where there is a
distinct centre channel. In one case it's a male voice, and in
another a female one, so it's not just frequency. I don't know if
there's really something different in the way those two are encoded,
all I know is the effect is startlingly different from the rest.

Its called centre channel encoding and is done at the studio for just such an effect
for ppl with 4.1 up systems.
*off topic..is this wrapping correctly i wonder?*...hm.. n/m

SOrry ADD kicked in.. lol

anyway you can force that with certain plugins for some software music players ...
don't know if XMMS has that ability but I believe it does.
Its basically a way to separate certain sounds for hte human ear thus creating (for a
human) pleasant ambience subtle audio cues. Kinda like multi-layered
classical music with strings in one area subtle fluting going on elsewhere that if
you listen closely you can hear perfectly ...

I have had SBLive surround and now Audigy surround working. I was
never able to get surround on, for instance, the default cd player,
but xmms manages everything fine for me. Have you tried it?

As for the basic assumptions about individuality and self, this is the core
of what I like about cyberpunk. And it's the core of what I like about certain
pre-gibson neophile techie SF writers that certain folks here like to put
down. Not everyone makes the same assumptions. I haven't lost my mind... it's
backed up on tape.

i need the surround while watching a dvd ;) this can only be done with xine.
you defenatly dont have surround with the cd player, cause a music cd only have
stereo sound. in this way, you have the same sound at all speakers(left and
right are different)

I also have surround sound with xine. Get it working in xmms and it
will probably work in xine - I suspect that they both need the same
plugin.

It cannot be that simple, as I have a couple of cd's where the centre
speaker is definitely carrying a separate track. There is no
mistaking it.

With the SBLive under 9.0 I followed Derek's instructions to install
the cdread plugin. The Mandrake page says that you need it if you
don't have a proper cable connection, but in spite of the cable
nothing was working before, and everything worked afterwards. When
lightning caused a spike that got my card I bought an Audigy. IIRC
it worked out of the box - but remember the plugin was still there.

Under 9.1 emu10k2 is installed and everything is fine.
