Matthew, could you please turn off html for posts to the list? Many of us
don't use it, or display it. Others simply never see any post that is in
html.

I just re-installed Mandrake and all is well, so far. I checked the
settings in the Mandrake Control Center and Smoothwall is not installed.
Maybe it will work this time??br

Hi Matthew,

I also recently had problems with surfing and email on Mdk 9.0. A
complete reinstall did it for me but for you, do check that the bottom
left blue plugs(if you're using Mozilla) are connected. They do not
automatically connect when you dial up or disconnect when you drop the
connection.

Hehe - you learn something every day. I didn't know that you could
connect/disconnect by clicking the plugs (bottom *right* on my display).

You may have to go in and disable smoothwall to begin with. I found
that on some installs it starts up automatically and unless you use
MCC (Mandrake Control Center) and do a run through of the
configuration, you don't even have to change anything, just run
through it, it will block internet access. So open it for
configuration or turn it off and see if you can then connect. HTH

I had the same problem which I fixed by downloading the 'one-interface'
file from smoothwall web site and decompress the archive into a tmp
directory. Then you have change to that directory and edit the
'interface' file. I had to change the line at the bottom of the file to
define the internet connection as using ppp0 and not eth0. Then I copied
all of the files from the download archive to /etc/shorewall. Worked
like a charm with no further problems.

RE: [newbie] Unable to surf...

2001-08-23 Thread FLYNN, Steve

Are you able to resolve anything else? For example, can you ping you ISP's
webserver? Can you ping the microsoft site, slashdot or freshmeat?

When kppp dies, does your modem stay online or does it drop the carrier -
should be easy to tell by looking at the lights, seeing as it's an external
modem.

Does kppp write anything to its log when it crashes? If so, post the
relevant bit.

OK, Kppp (LM8) sees my Modem Blaster External, dials out to my ISP.
most of
the time Kpppd crashes somehow (no connection timer) but is still
running
when I look for it with $ top.

I try killing the processes, but they won't die.

when Kpppd doesn't crash and I get the timer, etc, I'm unable to
resolve web
pages.

so, If Kppp is broken, what will fix it, and if this is a generic
linux
problem and not an ISP issue, how do I fix it?

much thanks
