Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Yes, you can host a game without connecting to the outside world.
Though I don't see why you would want to that, since you would be
all alone in the game and have no one to play against.

Or have I missed something? Is it possible to play against the computer?

What if you try it from the command line? Does it give you any helpful

Have you checked the XFree86 logs in /var/log? Maybe you can find a hint

Sorry, I don't use MCC for configuring the firewall so I wouldn't know.
One way to check which ports to open is to start with all ports closed,
run ET (or any other application) and then check /var/log/messages to
see on what ports it tried to connect.

Single user mode? You mean you are logged in as root when connecting to
the Internet? Isn't that a bit risky?
Anyway, I don't think this would make any difference as far as the ports
are concerned. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

When the game is started you are first presented with a menu, and I
don't think it it tries to connect to the net at that point. It doesn't
do that until you tell it to. So no, if you don't even get to the menu,
that probably has nothing to do with the firewall.
I have had this problem myself too. Usually everything works just fine

Go here http://www.gentoogames.com/ and you can download iso images for Enemy
Territory and America's Army.

Give them to your Windows using friends. They will boot up into a minimal
Linux environment with a Blackbox Window Manager to run the game in.

They will not write anything to the hard drive so they will not damage a
windows installation.

The game files can be copied to Mandrake quite successfully.

The Gentoo CDs require an Nvidia graphics card. Not sure about which network
connections it handles. It works fine with my direct Ethernet.

Personally I think ET is great and way better than America's Army.

Have you checked the connection between the chair and the keyboard?

As I told you before, I checked and yes, the A$$ socket is firmly planted in
place and operational!

What computer did you download the game to? If it was the one that
installed correctly, maybe when you transferred the file to the other
 computers it became corrupt.

I wish. It installed fine on the last computer I transferred it to, via NFS.

Only thing in common (which really doesn't add up) with the 2 comps that it
did not work on, is that both have Soyo MBs.

Hi Tony. Yes, I made it exec. by all. On 2 out of 3 comps, it quit out with
the same error. It installed correctly on the oldest one (900mhz Athlon)
using Mandrake d/l edition v9.0.

It would not install on Mandrake v9.0 boxed set on 1, and Mandrake d/l edition
v9.1 on another. Doesn't seem to be anything common there, does it?

Anyways, I got around it - I used NFS and copied the installed directory from
the machine it installed on over to the other 2.

Its not that big, so I'll burn a backup CD of it, after installation.

Thanks for the reply! :-)
