Re: [Newbie]StartX wont start

2002-01-14 Thread Lionel Lecoq

I am assuming that you mean startx (and NOT startX)
You should tell us which version of X you are using and post the XF86Config (resp.
XF86Config-4 if
you run X 4.x.x) Theoretically in a RH distro they should be in /etc/X11
to get the version X -version should work...

In my case, I don't bother specifying HorizSync and VertRefresh in the monitor section
since it's
a LCD screen.
I don't specify the virtual resolution either but if you must specify it, I believe it
should be
in the screen section but not in one of the display subsections...

Hm, I have to take a look at the BIOS. Alas, I've been there some times
already (for other reasons), but I cannot recall such a setting... but
my memory may be wrong.

That is correct. Interesting is, that the noise ... I should stop using
the word noise as the failure is not spread uniformly over the screen,
but are more horizontal bursts. Most interesting is, that if the PC does
nothing and you don't do anything too, the screen is fine. But as soon
as the PC (no idea if it's the CPU, memory transfers, disk i/o or
something) starts working the distortion is worse as more load the PC
has.

In the PC itself or in XF86Config? In XF86Config I set it to 4Megs, but
for the i810 the amount of video memory can vary. In the PC there are
512MB, which worked fine before under windows (I know this is not an
argument that it should work under linux too :-)

As long as IBM did not overclock the CPU it isn't.

I will try that :-)

an 8bpp mode is usable... but, you know, I cannot have a pc in my room
and know that it is only working, but not optimal :-)

That is specified in XF86Config again, correct? I will try that too.

Yes, it's already in the kernel :-) otherwise the chipset won't work
with X at all.

Thanks for the numerous and promising hints!

[Newbie]Success with CVS!

2002-01-14 Thread Lloyd Osten

Well, on Saturday, I got really brave (or just fed up with an unaccelerated
framebuffer) and downloades the CVS version of XFree86 (4.1.99.5). (I don't
think I got it all the first time, as it crashed during the build) anyway, I
managed to sucessfully build and install it! I'm still amazed at that,
really. I needed a new X because my video card (Radeon 8500) is unsupported
in 4.1.0, but is supposed to be in the CVS version. (It is.)
I had read somewhere that whenever new libraries are added, ldconfig should
be run. so I did that too, just in case
After a bit of tweaking in the XF86Config-4 file (puuting the right lines in
for appropriate drivers), I got the horrible xterm and twm, but at least the
flicker was gone (hooray). I had previously been using KDE. Commenting out
some stuff in xinitrc and changing the last line to exec /usr/bin/kdm
restored KDE. So I'm happy. I now have 1024 x 768 at 16 bit color at 85 Hz,
which will suffice quite nicely until v 4.2.0 is released.
So yes, you guys can build X too, as I had very little experience building
anything. Go for it!
And a great big THANK YOU to Carl W. Soderstrom for his extremely valuable
advice, which without it, I wouldn't have had a clue. Way to go, Carl!
Have a great day!

I tried the DVI/VGA connector, but it didn't work. "CrtScreen" didn't work
either (in 4.1.0). Since CVS has proved fruitful for some of you, I guess this
is my last chance.

[Newbie]CVSUP and the xc folder

2002-01-14 Thread Gerardo Amaya

Hello all, I have never make a cvsup so I will need some help.
First of all I create a xfree86.cvsup file like this one

*default release=cvs host=anoncvs.xfree86.org base=BASEDIR
*default prefix=PREFIX delete use-rel-suffix
*default compress
*default tag=.
xc-all
doctools-all
utils-all

now when I run CVSup I get some error about the basedir, like basedir not
found or something like that.

But I guess that is easily solved, now the main question, after I do CVSup I
have in /usr/ a folder xc/ now the question is what are the following steps,
do I have to make install something, what is that I have to make install,
could somebody show me the complete sequence I will apreciated.

thank you

I thought I saw a note in the XF86Config man page that line numbers in
error messages were off by one, but I couldn't find it just now. In any
case, the problem is certainly somewhere between lines 210 and 230,
shouldn't be too hard to find.

> xinit connection refuse (erron 111)

Of course the rest of this is just cascade from the syntax error.

Are you sure you mean to use the XF86Config that's in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11
(I'm assuming that the missing slash between X11 and XF86Config is a
transcription error)? Doesn't RedHat move the *real* XF86Config (the
one that's meant to be used) to somewhere under /etc ? Perhaps startx
(all lower case, normally) doesn't specify that like it should?

Re: [Newbie]ATI Rage Fury Pro/Xpert 2000 Pro

2002-01-14 Thread Holland, Matt

Alexei,

I could be off base here, but you might have a problem similar to what I had
with the Xpert 2000 (not Xpert 2000 Pro). I have a web page that describes
how to set up the Xpert 2000, because it is a common question on this list
(http://two.ucdavis.edu/~holland/unix/xpert2000.html). It sounds like you
have a slightly different card, but there's a chance that the same general
approach might work. It is also possible, as another person mentioned, that
a more recent version of X might do the trick.

Good luck,
Matt

[Newbie]xfree-4.1.0 compilation trouble

First sorry about my ugly English.

I use Mandrake Linux 8.1 with XFree-4.1.0 and they work fine. But I like to

I added -fno-rtty and I got no more rtti messages, then I added -fno-builtins

says that __builtin_new, __builtin_vec_new, set_new_handler,
__builtin_delete, and __builtin_vec_delete were removed from gcc in 1997.

What am I doing wrong?, Is gcc-3.0.3 incompatible with XFree86?

best regards.

Hmm... Not a surprise. The i810 chipset uses DIMMs with SPD chips that
contain memory timing information.
The PC Chips M571 can also use 72-pin SIMMs; the only way to know what
timings to use is to ask the user (or guess the worst)...

If your BIOS has a memory interleaving option, you might try fiddling with
that. Remember to note down all BIOS settings before fiddling...

As in, is the physical memory modules correctly rated for the clock speed
at which you're running them at?

As I said earlier- be sure to note down the current settings before
fiddling.

Refresh-rate, not colour depth. Look at the log to see what refresh-rate
your monitor supports, and fiddle the Section "Monitor" to force X to pick
a lower refresh rate. Windows seems to like 60Hz, for some reason, even
when the computer is connected to a PnP monitor that can do 85Hz...
Triv, 85Hz is more likely to show bandwidth problems that 60Hz...
It's also more likely to induce headaches and other health problems.

Yep.

Oh, I think it's supposed to do standard VGA...

Actually, if memory serves, this may have cropped up before. Given that
google.co.uk spiders the archives, some well placed queries might, just,
yield more ideas.
Words to look for probably include i810, XFree86, snow, and "screen
corruption".
Good luck ;-).

[Newbie]Chips & Tech CT65550 with XFree86 4.1.0

2002-01-14 Thread Kent Kostuk

I found someone else having difficulty getting XFree86 version 4.1 to run on
a Toshiba laptop using a CT65550 video chip set. I am running OpenBSD 3.0.

The problem appears to be with the chips_drv.o driver. One solution was to
replace the chips_drv.o file with one from version 4.0.3. This was done in a
debian environment. Does anyone know if this would work in Open BSD 3.0?

I am pretty green here, so any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks.

yeah, should work. the XF86 driver modules are supposed to be
platform-independent (you only need to recompile them for each new processor
architecture).

If you have RH 7.x /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 is used for X 4.x.x. If the installation
program decided
that X 3.3.6 was better for you then /etc/X11/XF86Config is used...
You can obviously overwrite those defaults. man XFree86 will tell you the sequence in
which X
searches for its configuration file...

Re: [Newbie]Desktop Environment, Window Manager, Xserver

2002-01-14 Thread Ted Spradley

Well, since nobody else seems to want to, I guess I'll take a shot at
this one.

Abbaasi Hasan wrote:

An X server is a program that provides graphical output and keyboard and
pointer (mouse) input services to multiple client programs. It
communicates with the clients using the X11 protocol. It must have
drivers to communicate with the keyboard, mouse, and display equipment.
The main purpose of the X server is to allow multiple client programs to
share the same {keyboard, mouse, display} at the same time. One of the
design goals of the X system was "mechanism, not policy". The X server
makes this possible, but it enforces minimal restrictions.

A Window Manager for X is a client program that plays a supervisory
role, i.e., it enforces policy. It decides which client gets the
"keyboard focus" at any given time. It decides where client windows are
placed on the display. I usually adds a bit of decoration around the
edges of the windows of other clients.

A "Desktop Environment" is a collection of client programs that are
intended to look nice and play well together. The X11 protocol includes
mechanisms for clients to communicate among each other, and there's a
standard for how they should do that, called ICCCM (Inter-Client
Communication Conventions Manual). But some people seem to need more
than that.

You need exactly one X server for each set of {keyboard, mouse, display}
on your network. Bear in mind that a set can include more than one of
each (search back through the list archives for the links to the
pictures of Carl Soderstrom's three 21' monitors).

In all but very unusual cases, you will want exactly one Window Manager
for each X server. There are lots and lots to choose from. TWM comes
in the Sample Implementation, Enlightenment looks real pretty, Blackbox
is simple, clean, and attractive in a minimalist aesthetic, there are
dozens more.

You may or may not want a Desktop Environment. You almost certainly do
not want to try to use more than one at a time.

[Newbie]AGPGart problem

2002-01-14 Thread Jeremy West

I just got the latest cvs package, and it seems to work much better with
my hardware. I seem to have lost my agpgart though. After looking in
all the logs, it doesn't seem to be getting loaded. What could be the
cause of this? How do I get it back. I checked, and the module is
still where it is suppose to be. I also have a question about this
option in my x config file. In my device section, it says option =
"nodri". Could this be the source of some of my problems? I had dri
working before. I guess this last cvs installation lost my setup for
some reason.

Thanks

[Newbie]Multi-head setup problem

2002-01-14 Thread SHOBHIT MATHUR

Hello All,

I do not belong to this mailing-list and am not a subscriber.

I am writing this mail to you all, to get some suggestions for
the solution of a persistent problem that I have been facing
for quite some time due to which, I have not been able to setup
the multi-head configuration.

The procedure followed is in complete accordance with the
documentation for dual-head setup in linuxdoc.org -
Xinerama-HOWTO. I am not interested in setting-up Xinerama
currently. I am only intending to bring-up dual monitor display.

The steps followed are thus :

* The 2 monitors are - Acer 77
* The PC is an AcerPower S Series
* The 2 Video cards are :

ATI Card Mach 64 [ built-into the motherboard ]
Matrox MGA 2064W [ Add-on card - PCI slot ]

* The output of XFree86 -scanpci is :

Probing for PCI devices (Bus:Device:Function)

(0:0:0) Intel 82443LX PAC Host
(0:1:0) Intel 82443LX PAC AGP
(0:7:0) Intel 82371AB PIIX4 ISA
(0:7:1) Intel 82371AB PIIX4 IDE
(0:7:2) Intel 82371AB PIIX4 USB
(0:7:3) Intel 82371AB PIIX4 ACPI
(0:13:0) Matrox MGA 2064W - FIRST VIdeo Card
(1:0:0) ATI card using a ATI Mach64 GDP - SECOND [built-in] Card.

Problem :

The monitors work fine when, each one of the cards are individually,
a part of the configuration. When the cards are simultaneously made
a part of the configuration, the recurring problem that occurs is, that
the built-in card [ ATI Mach64 ], gets suppressed. The only card being
recognised in such a situation is the Matrox MGA ! This problem is not
allowing me to have both the monitors work in unison. The file :
/etc/sysconfig/hwconf, has two entries for the 2 "VIDEO" cards. The
"driver" field in the file indicates that the ATI-3D Card is "disabled".
Kudzu promptly removes the existing ATI, built-in card from the
configuration, thus leading to this show-stopper.

Owing to this problem of mute-suppression of one card, I am not
able to proceed with the process of configuring multi-head support.
I earnestly, request some timely suggestions in this regard, as
I have not found any online documentation regarding this kind of weird
behaviour. The few questions that rise in my mind are :

 * Do motherboards have a default jumper-setting which allows only
single video-card support ? If so, achieving my setup would be a
matter of changing the jumper-settings. Acer manuals do not indicate
   such a fact.

 * Does this problem have to do with the fact that, one of the
video-cards is a motherboard-built-in Video card ? Does the scenario
   change, when the 2 video-cards are add-on cards ?

 * Does BIOS have some feature by which, support for 2 video cards can
   be enabled ?

Re: [Newbie]Desktop Environment, Window Manager, Xserver

2002-01-14 Thread Eric Sprague

KDE is a desktop environment, which includes a window manager. You do need a
window manager, but you can get away without a desktop environment if you
need the RAM.

probably xlib questions should be directed to Xpert, but ask anyway, someone
might know.

[Newbie]Mouse Cursor

2002-01-14 Thread Odhiambo Washington

Hi,

I'm using XFree86-4.1 with an S3 Trio 3D/2X which I've configured as an S3 ViRGE
and I get a nice display. However my PS/2 mouse gives issues. The cursor is
always at the top right hand corner of the screen. How do I get control of this
cursor?

My second question - is S3 Trio 3D/2X ever going to be supported or do I have
to just buy an i8x ;-)

TIA

2002-01-14 Thread Ani_Adarsh

Hi Anyone have a clue here ...

I've got 2 monitors and am happily runnin XFree86 4.0.1(or maybe 4.0.3 came
with RH7.1;-) on it ... startx brings up the 2 monitors nicely and Setting
default runlevel to 5 got gdm up .. but when i put tried kdm both my
monitors come blink alternately for some time and then kdm dies .. no
error messages nothin ... i tried gdm and xdm both work without a twitch ..
what seems to be the problem kde has .. And since now i know that
XF86Config-4 matters thanks to the list ... and my friend who left his old
b/w monitor with me ... i tried playin around with the file but seems to
make no difference ... Anybody know why ?

Cheers Ani
