[newbie] off topic - CRON

2001-12-27 Per discussione caspar kennerdale

hopefully someone can help.

I have three php scripts I'd like to execute autoimatically twice a day.

My isp says I can do this a this via cron-oir he wont let me.

He suggested that he could automate a perl script though.

Can I get a perlscript to then execute the php scripts?- I dpo not know
perl.

Any ideas anyone

cheers

php is not really meant to be executed via the command line (although it
can be). It is meant for dynamic websites. In dynamic websites, php is
already 'executed' everytime someone visits the website.

If you are going to run something via cron, you'd be better off writing it
in perl, C, or shell.

[newbie] folder options

2001-12-05 Per discussione Caspar Kennerdale

I have just installed mandrake

something that is annoying me with KDE is that the default view within the
file manager is with icons.

Is is possible to have the tree or detailed view as the default.

I briefly looked at the prefences and could find it anywhere

Thanks

In Konqueror, under the View/View Mode , select Detailed List. Then,
Under Window, selct Save View Profile - File Management, and save the
profile with all boxes checked. That's it. You're done.

fistly lilo has set a defualt of 5 seconds to choose the desired os./ Can
this be changedto 30 secs or whatever I want? where do I change it- i've
looked in the boot folder and have found a message documsnt but it cant be
 edited.

Also how do I start xwindows or navigate through the installed software.

When mandrake opens i give my user and p word on the cpomand line.

I can navigate through the folder but most of ot seems to be system files.

 Thanks in advance

For your lilo question, open /etc/lilo.conf with an editor like pico or
joe thats easy as you seem to be real new. eg, pico /etc/lilo.conf (as
root) Within the first few lines you'll see an option: timeout=50, this is
in
milliseconds, You can change it to 300 for 30 secs or whatever you want.
Save the edited file andthen at command line type lilo and enter to rerun
lilo and update it. To start X at the command line type startx. You can
use other commands for different desktops but for a start just type
startx.

[newbie] VM Ware

2001-11-21 Per discussione Caspar Kennerdale

I am on windows 2000 at work and have a copy of vmware

I have a cd copy of a bootbale version of manadrke 7.1 from a friend of
mine- this was successfully used to install on a 'virgin PC'

However on VMware it doesnt recognize the CD- initially it says
'there is no bootable CD' so I have made a boot floppy.

This seems to read the floppyt , starts t read the cd and after a few
minites gives the message ' this is not a mandrake cd'

does anyone have any ideas? is this because the cd is a copy

shall i download an iso from a mandrake mirror?

do I need all three if so- the inst, ext and supp iso's

thanks in advance

[newbie] Silly Question?

2001-04-06 Per discussione Caspar Kennerdale

will mandrake install over a ntfs formatted hardrive

i want to install over windows 2000, ideally without repartitioning-
(because I'm using a work computer)

The 7.1 cd I have wont work (although did with win 98)

Also when the compiuter had win 98 it automtaically configured xwindows.

I have tried installing under VMwar- and xwindows just wont configure!

anyone got any siggestions- or is re-format and dual bot the only way
forward

thanks in advance
