Don't you know big brother is always watching. Especially, un*x groups, listserves, and irc channels. Reason why, UNIX people are the smartest on the planet. Eric * paul rodrÃguez [EMAIL PROTECTED] [010830 12:32]: Views on the morality of shoplifting aside, there is a way you can buy books from a local independent bookstore online that is very convenient. Booksense.com is an national organization of independent bookstores which provides a common interface to order books online and also to find a local independent bookshop. Gift certificates are also available so that you can encourage shopping at independent bookstores (redeamable at most independent bookstores nation-wide). It's worth looking into. My local (and favorite) bookstore when I'm at school, Food For Thought (worker's collective) in Amherst, MA is a member. When I go home to an area where the nearest indy bookshop is hours away, this is a great resource. - Paul RodrÃguez _ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [newbie] Singel Network Firewall (SNF)
I installed it with little or no problem. Takes about 20-30 minutes with the installation only asking where to install and configure interfaces. The rest I would suggest having the manual printed out if you feel kinda funny dealing with something new. Especially since the initial configuration will be done via a web browser, It worked fine for me. I have 6 computers behind mine and my wife and next door neighbors haven't notice that I put it up. Good thing is it includes a proxy server which can transparent or authorizied. You decided. My only fallback was no X. Makes sense though, it is supposed to be a firewall router. I would suggest building a base system to install this on with about 10Gb. You can use the rest for storage or something, but the install only take 500Mb tops. Eric * [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [010609 13:23]: i installed it last night. it takes just about 20 minutes to install and has no GUI but as it said you have to loggin throught a browser. since i am still waiting to get another ethernet i have to wait. in the meantime i looked for documentation. there was no documentation in cd 1 that i had downloaded. is there any in src-cd ? would be very interesting to know if just a mandrake 7.1 do the same job as well. Re: [newbie] /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4
Think about it this way. If your windows box tries to go to a web site it will have to look the domain up in DNS. What happens if DNS can't send the request back because you disabled the forwarding of DNS requests? No DNS returns which means you shouldn't get to any sites unless by ip address. :) Eric * Jeff [EMAIL PROTECTED] [010617 23:42]: The following lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall.inet_sharing-2.4 don't seem to be of use to me and I would like to remove them. # Allow dhcp requests iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --sport bootpc --dport bootps -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --sport bootps --dport bootpc -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --sport bootps --dport bootpc -j ACCEPT # Allow dns requests iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p udp --dport domain -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -p tcp --dport domain -j ACCEPT I believe the reason the dhcp requests are allowed is because I thought I would use the mandrake connection sharing wizard at first but decided not to now as it complicates using samba with my windows machine. Correct me if I'm wrong but the dns requests line looks like it's accepting dns requests from eth0 on tcp and udp. I can't for the life of me figure out why I would want to do this. I only have two machines. One is running Mandrake 8.0 (not a dns server) and a windows machine that is sharing the connection of the mandrake box (ppp0). As long as the dns server entries are inside of the windows networking setup then I shouldnt be accepting dns queries for any reason then should I? I'm also writing my own firewall by hand with iptables to learn the in's and out's of how it works. When I finally have it finished can I just place it in /etc/rc.d/rc.firwall to have it executed on boot? __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [newbie] ssh trough firewall (SNF 7.2)
What are the contents of your internal machines' sshd_config and are you sure SSH is up and running. Another thing to check is to make sure ssh is allowed to go through to the internal network. It is disabled even from the firewall unless you enable it Eric * Patrick Ch. Re: [newbie] Rage 128 and Mandrake 8
That is funny. My ATI Rage Fury 128 has been working ever since Mandrake 7.1 came out. It uses the generic ATI Rage FURY driver. Oddly enough I also have another machine that has a ATI All IN Wonder which uses the same driver and I haven't had any problems. I am using the AGP verisons in both cases. Eric Ekong Mandrake User * Philip Mayer [EMAIL PROTECTED] [010701 13:19]: Hello, I read all the stuff about the Rage problems on Mandrake, especially the how-to @ http://www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/rage128-howto.html and the info on http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/hardware/hbits.html#Rage. I still don't get my Rage Fury AGP 32mb to work with X. If I switch to 640x480 it shows a functional, but very weird looking X (doublefeature), otherwise the screen goes blank, my monitor shuts down and the system locks up. Could someone provide me a link to some more information on this ? I had Suse 7.0 installed previously and it just worked fine. I'd rather use Mandrake, though ... Suse has something to say about this on http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/behling_rage128_suse72.html, I didn't do that on Suse 7.0 but maybe it will help figure out what the problem is, I'm too much of a newbie to get that working on Mandrake :( I'm working on an Athlon System with an Asus mainboard.
