[newbie] M9 Openoffice and Perl

2002-11-23 Per discussione PBone
Today on my standard M9 install for no good reason I can think openoffice
suddenly stopped working with this error (it had been working OK for about a
month)

no element found at line 1, column 0, byte 0 at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/XML/Parser.pm line
185

This is NOT an isolated problem - a google search shows a few people have had
similar problems but I could not find a solution (although one of the threads
is in Italian). I really need openoffice and if I can't get it work I'll
have to ditch Mandrake.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: [newbie] PPPoE and Modem in tandem

 Anne,

I share your pain. I was running MDK8.1 with ASDL as my default on a
Compaq laptop. But I take my show on the road quite a bit and needed to
use the dialer. Problem was, while the dialer would connect, the
browser, email program or whatever wouldn't see the connection. I later
ran into the same problem with Windows 98 and found that I had to shut
down my ADSL software before I could get a dailup connection that the
 computer would recognize.

So if I may rephrase your question: How can one deactivate pppoe once
it's started so that ppp can have a clear shot at the connection in a
 way the software will recognize?

Right now, because of my inability to figure that one out, I'm using
WinXP on one partition and Linux on another on a new laptop...

 Best regards,

 Pete

I don't know whether I am adding to the confusion or helping. I have been
using a dialup modem and very easily acessing it via kppp. I am changing to
dsl which involved pitting in a lan card. My dsl connection isn't even set up
yet but I found that connecting the LAN card led to a similar problem where
kppp would connect OK but email, browser etc would not work. I sort of got
around it by using mandrake control centre to set up a separate profile
configured for dial up access. The only problem now is that I have to use
mandrake control centre to access the dial up.

[newbie] Running kppp as root- is it a problem?

2002-11-20 Per discussione PBone
I used to run kppp as a user to access my dial-up modem without any problems.
After installing a LAN card I found that I when I ran kppp as user the
connection would be made but the browser and email would not work. Mandrake
control centre insisted that I was not connected to the internet. I worked
around the problem by creating a new profile and using Mandrake control
centre to access the internet. The only problem now is that kppp runs as
root.
1. Is this a security problem
2. How can I go back to using kppp as user?

   Gracias.

ksensors will do the job if you want a KDE app (it can pop up the values on
the KDE panel system tray)

[newbie] Fwd: kio_thumbnail

I saw a posting you made to a mailing list detailing a problem you had
with kio_thumbnail hogging all system resources.

Turns out I had the same problem and it was very hard to solve.

In my case I believe the problem was related to a link I had on the
desktop though I'm not really sure.

I had a symbolic link on my desktop to a microsoft Excel file in my
Documents directory.

When I first created the link it did not seem to cause a problem but
now, everytime I drag the file from my documents directory and say Link
Here it send the machine into an endless memory eating loop untill I
kill the kio_thumbnail process.

It seems to only be with that Excel file as some others I tested did not
cause this problem.

I could not reply directly to the list you posted too because I am not
subscribed but perhaps you could post this for me as a follow up in case
someone else is having this problem and this might help them?

John

I am forwarding this to the mailiing list as required. I don't have any excel
files so it doesn't apply to me but ut may help someone else.

[newbie] kio_thumbnail hogging system resources

2002-11-04 Per discussione PBone
Several times now while runnig KDE on M9 I have noticed that my computer
becomes very unresponsive and the hard drive becomes very active. I think it
mainly happens when I am on the net (I use mozilla).
When (after a long time) I have been able to do a ps aux I find a process
kio_thumbnail utilising most of the system resources. When (after another
long time) I succeed in shutting down this process the system is OK. Does
anyone know what is happening and what I can do about it.

bother with mplayer? Is there something about it that makes it worth a
 days hunt and d/ling? Curious.

I think that this has already been posted but http://www.trylinuxSD.com/dvd/
has a very good walk-through. I have mplayer, ogle and xine installed and I
generally use the first two (for playing dvds). Mplayer has excellent video
and sound quality and also plays a vast number of formats (including wmv).
Make sure you specify a cache if you play dvds though.

[newbie] try again: Kernel problem in 8.2

2002-03-27 Per discussione PBone

Like others I have a problem with the 8.2 kernel. My problem is that whenever
I access the internet the computer either crashes hard or spontaneously
reboots. I access my ISP fine and the page starts loading and then crash. My
system logs say nothing except restart.

It must be a kernel problem because I have been running 8.1 with no problems.
I have reinstalled 8.2 twice with exactly the same problem- I even downloaded
the kernel separately from the net and it still had the same problem. What I
am doing now is running 8.2 with the 8.1 kernel and there seem to be no
problems (except that galeon keeps crashing).

My system is an Athlon 1000 Tbird on an Epox KTA2 board.

Re: [newbie] Wine under 8.1...Anybody?

2001-12-06 Per discussione PBone

I never had any success with the stock mdk wine rpms. I did have success with
the transgaming wine x packages. You have to pay for the rpms (source is
free) but its pretty cheap. Most importantly for me it runs Champinship
Manager 01/02 flawlessly :-)
