by all means send the xconfig-4 script and the exact version of the tar file you used. thanks - Original Message - From: Steve Jeppesen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 29, 2002 9:29 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] 5 stars but ... I have noticed the problems people are having with Nvidia and 9.0. For myself, Geforce2 mx400 - I had no problems with either 8.2 or 9.0 I made sure I d/led the source files (tar.gz), installed what ever was needed for tar.gz and followed the instructions on the Nvidia site. And as long as I see the Nvidia splash screen just be X starts, I know everything went well. On one note however, I changed my system to not load X on startup. It is a hassle, but it does prevent problems if things are not working right - and I am always (will always is the correct term) learning Linux and attempting to learn/configure something new all the time and using init level 3 is just more sensible. Just a thought, maybe just under Mandrake and not any of the other Linux flavors, your irq's are being assigned differently and thus you are experiencing irq conflicts which could cause lockups and such. [newbie] X, nVidia problems ...
hello, tried to install some new nvid drivers for man 8.2, went to nvidia, matched the kernel and glx (3XXX) versions. the kernel installed fine, but the glx didn't want to. used the '-e' option outlined in the nvid read me and it installed but now X won't start at boot up! since i'm no expert on the console, i'm in trouble deep. any way to get myself out of this mess that isn't too complicated? any help would be appreciated. thanks Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? hello, i've got mandrake set up on hdb1 and i would like to access a debian partition on hda8. looked at the control center and was somewhat perplexed by th options for mountpoint, i was under the impression it should be /mnt ... . tried to edit fstab by adding the info and that didn't work. obviously i'm missing something. tried to access debian from redhat (hda6) and got the same message, 'mount point does not exist' . also at boot and shutdown i got a message something like, 'no new endfile'. any help would be appreciated. thanks. [newbie] Grip ... gain adjustment
hello, thanks for the help with the lame encoder, it worked fine and twice as fast as ogg. the sound levels are low though and i read through the help manual for grip and they talked about gain adjustment in the config/rip window. i find this a bit confusing, setting gain with the outlined switches. does anybody know how i can set it so the volume levels are higher? thanks. [newbie] mp3 encoder for GRIP ...
hello, finally managed to get grip installed. only the dependencies had dependencies and that went on for awhile ... anyway i successfully ripped some cd's but only in ogg format. that's alright but i have a lot of friends who don't know what a 'linux' is or a winamp or an ogg. so i'd like to be able to encode in mp3 as well. went to lame and downloaded something, i think the whole works, and i got stuck at the configure stage, the shell said something about, C compiler cannot create executables. all i want is a good mp3 encoder that i can access through grip, that is as easy as possible (newbie level) to install. thanks-a-bunch. Asked this question previously, with very little detail supplied as a response - only what apps could be used. this is a newbie mailing list, right? right now i got ripperX-2.1-1.i386.rpm, will this work on man. 8.2. if there is something better, please let me know (and where i can find it). once that is settled i, -ivh the rpm from the command line? i can then find it where, /bin ? from there i can make a shortcut to the desktop? this is a gui app, i'm told, is it pretty straightforward to use for someone coming from windows and musicmatch or is there something i should know. the 'how to' made it seem pretty simple? thanks. There's probably a better application installed by default - look in the K menu for What to do | Enjoy music video | Rip a CD. This runs grip, which is a very nice ripper. All you do is put the CD in the drive, select the tracks to be ripped from the Track tab, then select the Rip tab and press Rip+Encode. (Because of the way ripping is done in Linux it dumps the CD contents to [uncompressed] WAV files then converts them to [compressed] MP3; if you press Rip you'll just get WAVs]. There's a useful change worth doing to the default configuration, though, namely changing the rip format from MP3 to OGG (Ogg Vorbis), which gives you smaller but better-quality rips. To do this in grip, select the Config tab, then the MP3 tab, then the Encoder tab, then change the Encoder: pulldown to oggenc, then rip as before.
