Re: [newbie] Another super newbie question

Four notified me that they could not install. All these were readable and
copyable in Windows and I have since reput them with no problem by
installing with Install Software. The names are shortened at bit - if you
have any doubts - lemmi know.

gnome-mime-data
tcsh-6.12 -4
OpenOffice.org..libs-1.0.2
xlockmove-5.06

The system has mostly fixed itself but still does not function as well as
another installation on the same LAN previously installed - with absolutely
no hitch.

Now, about every third start up when the booting process gets to the KDE
screen where it flashes about six things as it goes along - it stalls on the
monitor - blinking for about a minute then up comes a blue screen - and I
have no options but to reset.

How can I check to see if my system is properly installed ? It just booted
up with no problems - after three tries. During one failure , a note
appeared to run fsck manually (with no parameters). I went to a Root konsole
and typed fsck and was warned that do this can cause sever damage to a
mounted file system. Beats me.

nonfb means no framebuffer. It's driving your video card in dumb
mode. Can you post the names of the apps that failed?

Anne , thanks heaps.

Did what you said and have booted up three times now with no glitches -.

I got another question for ya - don't tell anyone I asked/.

I have managed to upgrade to KDE 312 on my right box - but I can't do the
same on the left box - maybe I have forgotten what I did. What is the
correct way to do that? (and should I bother) ?

(still working on trying to print with the Epson thru the LAN from the
right box - [while in Windows] ). Having now installed 9.1 on that box
(dual booting with XP) printing works just fine.)

 Hi, Ralph.

Sounds to me as though the monitor is not set up properly. First, if
you have the monitor manual, get it out so that you can verify
exactly what settings it can take. Don't rely on memory from windows
days - you probably need more detail than that would give you, like
 possible refresh rates.

Then, open up Mandrake Control Center. On the Hardware section there
is a tool for setting up the monitor.

Re: [newbie] what do these different things mean? KDE, Gnome, etc

Along these lines When I boot up my machine go directly to KDE. If I want
to select to run gnome (for instance) at booting time how do I do that?
Surely pressing some key at some time in the booting process will offer me
that menu - when I logout I do get to this menu.

[newbie] Cleanup a failed install

2003-06-17 Per discussione Ralph Bagwell

I have now several suggestions and "howtos" on
cleaning up my failed install from you kind people -many thanks - Seems that
removing partitions for the Linux install is the answer - I am now doing what
all said do - backing up to another drive on my LAN -

I notice that Partition Magic offers the option to
"Delete partition" - anything wrong with using that?

I am now wondering if I should somehow delete the
LILO or can I just leave it . My next effort is to try to install Morphix to
disk - it among others was the onlyversion that installed (the versions
that workwholly from bootable CDs) and it offers desktop icon to
install to disk - (perfect for a real newbie)

[newbie] Another super newbie question

2003-06-17 Per discussione Ralph Bagwell

My 9.1 install went"so-so" on my "left"
machine ( I simply replaced the drive - installed XP - left half of the 40 GB
available - ) Four "things" failed to install - two from the first disk and two
from the second disk. When Linux failed to boot , I selected "Linux - nonfb" and
it booted .

What is "nonfb" ?

I have a system connecting to the web (using
the "nonfb" option) and the names of the four programs that didn't load. How can
I attempt to install them. BTW each of the four items are readable and copyable
from the CD's (using Windows" - same CD reader - same everything booting up in
XP)

[newbie] NTFS ?

2003-06-16 Per discussione Ralph Bagwell

My effort to install Mandrake 9.1 on a PC that has
Windows XP already installed has stopped at the "partitioning" phase twice . I
now recall a comment somewhere that Linux doesn't like NTFS systems - Can I
install on this XP machine that is using NTFS? If not can I use Partition Magic
and create a FAT 32 partition and go from there?

I'm on hold !!

Thanks

Re: [newbie] I feel so stupid

2003-06-15 Per discussione Ralph Bagwell
Hi Joe,

I have gaim up and working just fine with AOL,MSN and Yahoo messenger
programs.

I was never able to follow your instructions using urpmi - I tried :

urpmi.addmedia texstar
ftp://ftp.bahcesehir.edu.tr/pub/texstar/mandrake/9.1/rpms with hdlist.cz

many times and never got it to work. I then tried another suggestion by
someone else and the file was available and was downloading for a couple of
hours until I gave up - it never finished.

Then I went to the texstar ftp site , downloaded the file in a couple of
minutes and clicked on the file and it installed in another couple of
minutes - all by itself -

Question is why is this not the preferred method of installing new
software - ? Am I missing something ?

Ralph

O.K. sorry if I am telling you stuff you know already but...

To become the root user open a terminal/console window and type: su

when prompted give your password for the root user/super user (su)

then copy and paste this line into your command line:
 urpmi.addmedia texstar
 ftp://ftp.bahcesehir.edu.tr/pub/texstar/mandrake/9.1/rpms with hdlist.cz
 hit enter...

wait till texstar is setup as a source for urpmi

 then type: urpmi gaim

After downloading, you will be told that: the following packages have
 bad signatures:
 ...gaim-0.64-1tex.i586.rpm

You DO want to continue installation, type y and enter, the signature is
only bad because you don't have urpmi set up with the proper gpg
 signatures for this source.

Now assuming that works you should have the updated version of gaim
ready to use, including the MSN protocol.

 HTH, joe

Sure thing. My smb.conf file is at /etc/samba/ . It says under [printers]
path = /var/spool/samba and yes my jobs are there.

It also says workgroup = MDKGROUP under [global]

Is this file editable? And does it config samba ?

Ralph - could you look at /etc/smb.conf to see where it is locating
your spool file, and check that your print jobs are actually in that
 file.

Thanks a lot Joe BUT:

I have the program running but can only get AOL to work. I have only two
options AOL/ICQ and TOC (whatever that is) as proocols available,.

I was unable to follow your instructions on setting up the urpmi deal.

But I now know how to make the amsn program run - which gives me MSN use -
although I have been unable to execute the program like I think you are
supposed to - nor can I put an icon on the desktop for it - I do have an
icon for gaim.

ralph

I use a program called gaim to chat with people on MSN, it comes with
MDK9.1 but i found it easier to install a newer version that had the msn
plug-in installed (rather than mess around with the version that comes
 with mandrake 9.1).

make sure you have urpmi set up properly with texstar as a source, this
page can help with that: http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php

then (as root) type into a console: urpmi gaim

then (using the updated version of gaim you will find under
networking/instant messaging in the kde menu) it is pretty fool proof to
set up an account and chat with people on MSN (click on accounts, select
add, choose msn as protocol, put in a user name and password, and viola!)

To get the icon on the desktop in KDE click 'n drag gaim from instant
messaginge menu to the desktop. When given the option choose link here.

From one newb to another, hope this helps. Joe.

Really great help derek - thanks

ralph

How do I get an icon on the desktop that runs the program ?

./amsn means run the application amsn which will be found in the current
directory. It would also work if you typed /path/to/directory/amsn

In Linux any file can be executable if the 'execute' file attribute bit is
set. It does not need an .exe or .bin extension.

If you are running KDE.To make a desktop icon just right click on desktop
and
 select CreateNewLink to application

If the app you want to run already has a menu item then just click on the
kde
menu and drag/drop the menu entry onto the desktop.

If you want to add a new menu item, run menudrake from Mandrake Control
 Centre.

[newbie] Add printer

2003-06-10 Per discussione Ralph Bagwell

My 9.1 install went great - I can surf the web,
listen to CD's , view images and play mp3's - etc -but I can't get my printer to
work which is shared on another computer on my LAN.

When I run "Mandrake Control Center 9.1" , under
the "hardware" tab I select "PrinterDrake helps you set up your
computer".

After a short waiting period and a couple of
messages I get "Please wait - searching for new printers" - - after another
short wait - I get a menu offering "Add a new printer" - I select that option -
then I get another menu offering to check or uncheck three "auto detect" options
. So I uncheck "Auto-detect printers connected to this computer" and leave
checked "Auto-detect printers connected directly to a local network" and
"Auto-detect printers connected to machines running Microsoft Windows" - and
"OK".

Then appears a window saying "The following printer
was auto-detected. The configuration of the printer will work fully
automatically " And below that there isa check on :"Epson Stylus COLOR
600 ESC/P, printer "EpsonSty" on SMB/Windows server "ralphleft.mshome.net". I
click "OK".

Then another window asks if my printer is "EPSON
Stylus Color 600" . I click "The model is correct".

Then I am offered the option to print test pages
and it doesn't print. I have gone through this several times - looking for entry
errors.

Well, my printer is an Epson COLOR 600 but I don't
know where the "EpsonSty" or the "ralphleft.mshome.net" comes from. The computer
is identified as "ralphleft" but maybe the "mshome" should be "WORKGROUP" which
is the name I use on my LAN.

I think I am real close to getting it right - can
someone give me a shot of "help" please.

I downloaded the mardrake image file and made the boot.img floppy . Each
time I try to boot I get an error saying "crc errorVFS: Cannot open root
device 08:22 - Kernal panic:VFS Unable to mount root fs on 08:22.
I downloaded the image again and got the exact same results.
I tried booting from the CDs and again got a boot failure.

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Tnhanks a lot.

Re: [[newbie] super new]

Thanks . That is the first thing I did - with two different floppy disks made from the
image
files on the two disks - using rawrite. Today I have downloaded the CD image for
redhat 5.2.3
and it seems to be working - booting from either the floppy (boot.img) or the CD
itself.
I wanted the mandrake version because I am told it includes video drivers for my TXPRO
board
which has an integrated video.

Thanks again.

Not exactly sure, Ralph, but if you have the CD, why not make the boot image
from the CD using rawrite.exe. in the dosutils folder on the CD. Follow the
instructions there and you should have no problem.
