[newbie] 10/100 mb hub won't work
I have a 10/100MB hub at home. All my computers (NT 4.0 server and workstation, Win 95) work fine with the hub. I plugged the Linux box into the hub and it won't work. I switched back to my 10 MB, just to slow for a power user like me, and it works fine. What gives?
Re: [newbie] adsl
John, you are correct. You will need another network card in the PC to allow the other networked computer to access the net. I have the same setup with my cable modem, but I'm still using Winblows NT 4.0. Haven't had time to configure my Linux box to be my gateway to the internet. -Original Message- From: John Kintree [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thursday, April 27, 2000 12:09 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] adsl On Wed, 26 Apr 2000, you wrote: I'm considering adsl service possibly within the next month (this 56k connection is about done!) They installed the Ethernet card as well as the external DSL modem, and configured it for Windows. After they left, I booted into Mandrake 7.0. At first I had difficulty getting the dsl modem to work. Then I did a fresh install of Mandrake 7.0, it recognized the new ethernet card and configured it, asked just a couple of questions about DHCP and network mask, and when I had finished the installation and re-booted, my dsl modem was working. All I had to do was click on Netscape. It was amazingly easy. And, since I have separate partitions for my /home and /usr directories, the re-installation did not mess with stuff I wanted to keep. When we get a 2nd PC, I'll try to get IP-masquerading to work so both computers can use the same dsl modem. I think the PC with the dsl modem will need another Ethernet card to connect to the hub. Check the permissions on the files. Make sure you have execute permission on the script. If you don't know how to change permisson, do a "man chmod" On Tue, 07 Mar 2000, bosco wrote: Yeah I know.. I have Linux Mandrake 6.1 installed on my machine and am trying to get it to work on my network. My original plans were to get this Linux box up and running as a Server for my 2 Win 98Se machines. Internet server as well. I recompiled the kernal (2.2.13) with the tulip driver included with the network card. I was able to get into the Linux Config utility from the KDE desktop. At the time It showed as one of four adaptors and said it was inactive. I told it to be active upon boot and to activate it at that time. I then later tried to get into it and it would no longer show it as one of the adaptors and only showed four adaptors. I did NOT add an IP address to the card at the time. (The other three "adaptor" slots are empty) The card is recognized when Linux first boots up and the eth0 shows up in my /Proc directory. What do I need to do to make it show up on my net work? I currently am using the Win98se internet sharing but I have to have my main win 98 machine online to use it. Partial answers Here are my questions, 1) If I let linux install lilo. It should have two options it can boot to, right? Linux and DOS. If I let it boot to DOS, will it, in actuality, load the windows 2k boot loader? This would be ideal to me. Would the windows 2k boot loader survive having been moved by Lilo? Yes, there are other methods but this would work 2) How do I get linux to recognize the drives on the Promise card, I was under the impression it had built in support for the Ultra66... During install from floppy MDK 7 will ask if it can copy addidional information to the boot floppy, then reboot. After installation check syslinux.cfg on the floppy. there should be lines like " append ramdisk=32000 initrd=hd.rdz mdkinst hd ide2=0xb000,0xb402 ide3=0xbc00,0xc002" ensure that /etc/lilo.conf contains the "ide2=etc and the ide3= portions 3) Is there a DVD player for linux? someone else ? Thanks everyone!
