[newbie] 10/100 mb hub won't work

2000-07-21 Per discussione Rodney

I have a 10/100MB hub at home. All my computers (NT 4.0 server and
workstation, Win 95) work fine with the hub. I plugged the Linux box into
the hub and it won't work. I switched back to my 10 MB, just to slow for a
power user like me, and it works fine. What gives?

John, you are correct. You will need another network card in the PC to allow
the other networked computer to access the net. I have the same setup with
my cable modem, but I'm still using Winblows NT 4.0. Haven't had time to
configure my Linux box to be my gateway to the internet.

My dsl service is through Southwestern Bell, and I have just a single PC.

installed the Ethernet card as well as the external DSL modem, and

it for Windows. After they left, I booted into Mandrake 7.0. At first I
had
difficulty getting the dsl modem to work. Then I did a fresh install of
Mandrake 7.0, it recognized the new ethernet card and configured it, asked
just
a couple of questions about DHCP and network mask, and when I had finished
the
installation and re-booted, my dsl modem was working. All I had to do was
click on Netscape. It was amazingly easy. And, since I have separate
partitions for my /home and /usr directories, the re-installation did not
mess
with stuff I wanted to keep.

When we get a 2nd PC, I'll try to get IP-masquerading to work so both
computers
can use the same dsl modem. I think the PC with the dsl modem will need
another Ethernet card to connect to the hub.

Check the permissions on the files. Make sure you have execute permission on
the script. If you don't know how to change permisson, do a "man chmod"

What is the output of dmesg?
also /var/log/messages might offer some help.
You might also try using linuxconf to set hostname

Hello, I have a problem that nothing I have seems to explain...
I have a linux box running on an Asus P2B-S motherboard with 32 meg of
memory, Celeron 300a, Diamond Stealth 2000 video card (Pci with standard
S3
chipset.), 8 Gig hard drive, LinkSys 10/100 Network card and a CD rom.
I have Linux Mandrake 6.1 installed on my machine and am trying to get it
to
 work on my network.

My original plans were to get this Linux box up and running as a Server
for
my 2 Win 98Se machines. Internet server as well. I recompiled the kernal
(2.2.13) with the tulip driver included with the network card. I was able
to
get into the Linux Config utility from the KDE desktop. At the time It
showed as one of four adaptors and said it was inactive. I told it to be
active upon boot and to activate it at that time.
I then later tried to get into it and it would no longer show it as one of
the adaptors and only showed four adaptors. I did NOT add an IP address to
the card at the time. (The other three "adaptor" slots are empty)
The card is recognized when Linux first boots up and the eth0 shows up in
my
 /Proc directory.

What do I need to do to make it show up on my net work?
I currently have my Win98se machines setup as peer to peer and see no
reason
to change that. I currently am using the Win98se internet sharing but I
have
to have my main win 98 machine online to use it. I would much rather get
linux up and running full time and let it connect when necissary and then
no
longer use internet sharing with my win98Se machine. Eventually I expect
to
put my system on the net when I can do so cheaply.
I am assuming the SAMBA utilities will get me there and I am sure its
something real simple to setup. Without swimming through tons of man pages
etc can someone tell me what I need to do to get it to recognize and be
 recognized on my network?

I should also be able to use the net from my linux machine at the moment
through my Win98se machine with internet sharing active shouldn't I?
I may get my linux machine hooked up to my ISP tomorrow so I can try
linking
 up that way as well.

I also tried changing my HOSTNAME but I did it from within linux config
and
it doesnt seem to like it much. Says something about unknown name HOSTNAME
=
myhost.com. Just trying to change the name the machine has.
 Thanks for any help!

I used to run Linux way back before it was a 1.0 version and it sure has
come a long way. Eventually I expect to have numerous computers on my
little
network. (well one for every member of my family and extra hookups for

Yea.. I was looking into that. That is why I pointed him to the
linuxvideo.org they are implimenting some stuff towards the kernell and
software to decode DVD's so they can be played...from what I gather.

 Partial answers

  Here are my questions,

  1) If I let linux install lilo. It should have two options it can boot
 to,
right? Linux and DOS. If I let it boot to DOS, will it, in actuality,
 load
the windows 2k boot loader? This would be ideal to me. Would the
windows
2k boot loader survive having been moved by Lilo?

Yes, there are other methods but this would work

  2) How do I get linux to recognize the drives on the Promise card, I
was
under the impression it had built in support for the Ultra66...

During install from floppy MDK 7 will ask if it can copy addidional
information to the boot floppy, then reboot.
After installation check syslinux.cfg on the floppy. there should be
lines
 like
 " append ramdisk=32000 initrd=hd.rdz mdkinst hd ide2=0xb000,0xb402
 ide3=0xbc00,0xc002"
ensure that /etc/lilo.conf contains the "ide2=etc and the ide3= portions

  3) Is there a DVD player for linux?
 someone else ?

  Thanks everyone!

Hmm, I have this and it does work..
I compiled a kernel on the first try...
Used Xconfig from the KDE desktop.
Was able to compile from there and make zlilo and am running that kernal
now..
Now if I could get my network to network I would be happy...

Mandrake 6.1 has a bug, you cannot, no matter what you do,
