  Hello,

The subject pretty much says it all. Whenever I open a new window,
whatever the program may be, it always opens in a window that is
off-center on the screen. How do I make it automatically maximize?
  Thanks for your help.

This depends on the app you are starting, if you are starting the program anew
or open another window (e.g. a new Netscape window).
Tell me which apps you mean and I will try to give you an example, if it's
possible (it is in many cases, but requires some fiddling about).

Thanks for responding to my question. First of all, whenever I start Netscape (in
a new process), it NEVER opens in a maximized window. Also, when I'm in Netscape
and let's say I right-click on a link and choose OPEN IN NEW WINDOW, the new
window that gets created also NEVER opens maximized. It gets really annoying
after a while. I also notice that all the other programs in WindowMaker do the
same thing...that is, opening in an UNmaximized window. Thanks for your help.
Ryan.

Yes, I'm running a dual-boot win98se and linux machine. When downloading
from the exact same site on a windows session, it downloads perfectly but
doesn't even complete half-way on a linux session. If you need any
more info, please ask. Thanks.

[newbie] hard disk thrashing and modem problem...

2000-02-25 Per discussione Ryan Drafall

Hello,
After installing Mandrake7.0 perfectly yesterday and running it for
the first time, I noticed some (what seemed to be unnecessary) hard disk
thrashing. Even when no programs are running, every 3 or 4 seconds I
can hear a little thrashing from the hard disk. Is this normal? Also,
my modem will still not work. I've set up everything with linuxconf and
stuff like that, but I still get "Sorry, Modem is Busy" error. I
noticed that when I boot my 'puter to Linux, in the boot up process, it
says "BRINGING UP INTERFACE PPP0-[FAILED]". I'm using a PII 300 MHz
with 96 mb of RAM (which Linux recognizes totally), 6.4 gig, modem is a
CPI ViVa 56LC-SM ISP PnP (non-winmodem, i think). I have disabled "PnP
OS installed" option in the BIOS and I'm running a dual-boot
win98se/linux machine with LILO as my boot loader. When I check how
much of my swap partition (133 Mb) is in use, it says 130 Mb! Whereas,
when it says how much RAM is in use, it says I have 2 Mb free out of
96mb!!! Shouldn't Linux be using a lot more swap file and not as much
RAM? Thank you very much to any one who can help. Ryan.

[newbie] Linux won't recognize my 96 Mb of RAM...

2000-02-23 Per discussione Ryan Drafall

Hello fellow Linux buddies,
Everything went great with the install..however, it only recognizes
that I have 64 Mb of RAM, when indeed, I really have 96 Mb of RAM. How
do I get Linux to recognize the other 32Mb? Your response is greatly
appreciated..Thanks. Ryan.

 Two options

When you boot linux, do so like this:

 LILO BOOT: linux mem=96M

or edit your /etc/lilo.conf flie to include a line which says:

 append="mem=96M"

 and re-run

 /sbin/lilo.

You will have to be loggedin as root to do this.

(We really do need an FAQ in here don't we!)

UhhhI don't have a lilo.conf anywhere on my system. I'm using Lnx4win
if that makes a difference. Also, there's way too much HD thrashing...even
for opening some small-ass text editor it thrashes like crazy and takes
like 15 sec. for it to load. My system is a PII 300, 96 Mb of RAM, 6.4 Gb
HD, blah blah blah...if you need any more information, please ask. Thanks
for your help. Ryan.

[newbie] can't get Kppp to dial using my modem...

2000-02-23 Per discussione Ryan Drafall

Hello,
I've set up Kppp with all the necessary adjustments and when I try
to dial using my CPI ViVa 56LC-SM ISA modem (non-winmodem), it gives me
an error messages saying "Sorry, modem busy". What can I do to make
this work? If you need more info, please say so and I'll get back to
you. Thanks for your help. BTW, you can talk to me (it may be easier)
on AOL Instant Messenger...my screen name is Twygg1. Thanks again.
Ryan.
