Re: [newbie] Computer shuts off after a few seconds

2005-01-09 Per discussione Scott Wagner

Thanks for all the responses. Well, stupidly, I tried (actually I succeeded)
in putting a stick of DDR ram in an SDRAM slot. The system still worked
after I took it out though. This morning I disconnected all the drives, took
the ram out and cleaned the slots and replaced it and gave it an overall
cleaning with air. There is some play in the motherboard, I pushed away from
the case- not sure what else to do about that. Tried starting it to see if
there was any difference. It ran longer this time, maybe 10 seconds, then
there was a blue flash in the vicinity of the power supply and it cut off.
Oh well, I think this one is beyond me.

Thanks,
SW

[newbie] Computer shuts off after a few seconds

2005-01-08 Per discussione Scott Wagner
Hello
Today I put a third hard drive and an additional 256MB of ram (there were
already 2 256MB sticks) in my computer, after which it would not boot. I
took the new ram out and it booted ok. I took one of the original sticks out
then to look at it make sure I had gotten the right kind, and replaced it.
Since then when I turn the computer on it turns off right away. As soon as
the fans start to turn, it cuts off. It is a 1.53 gig athlon, K7S5A
motherboard, pc2100 ram. Appreciate any help.

Thanks,
SW

[newbie] wireless card for M10

Can someone recommend a wireless PCI card that works with Mandrake 10?
I'm using an 802.11b AP but would consider getting a 802.11g card in
anticipation of upgrading later -- as long as it's backward compatible.

There really shouldn't be any issues with the SB PCI 128 - are you
 having problems with it?

Scott, what do you mean by windows saves it as a text file?

Do you mean, that windows saves patch.pl as patch.txt ? - In that case
it's no wonder everything goes awry. I can only think of one way that
could
happen : if you use M$-file-explorer (I'm not sure of the name) to drag'n
drop the file from the harddisk to the floppy. As far as I remember, this
 explorer-thingy doesn't show file-extensions, but nevertheless I doubt
that
even a M$-app could behave that stupid.

No, I think the problem is that the first time you tried to install 8.2
you
created a file-system on your HD. Then you reached the select-packages
part
and everything stopped. Now, when you try another install, this time with
the
patch in place, the installer finds an alien partition-table and panics.

May I recommend : Do an expert install, and choose to delete all
partitions
except the windows-ones. Then, create linux-partitions once again to your
liking. Remember to have the floppy in place.

If still in trouble, repost to this list, I'm sure there are people here
to
help you through this. I'm sure it's only some minor issue.

Here's a description of my latest attempt::
I attempted to reinstall Mandrake 8.0, because using the patch I cannot get
to the disk partitioning step in 8.2.
I chose an expert install. When I got to disk partitioning I chose the
wizard and clicked on erase entire disk and erased the hdb disk that my
I'm installing linux on (I have Windows on a seperate hd). I then went back
and manually partitioned the drive and chose to format each new partition.
Install appears to go normally untill packages are almost all installed and
then it fails saying:
Some important packages were not installed properly. Either your cdrom
drive or your cd is defective.
Check the cdrom in an installed computer using 'rpm-qpl Mandrake/RPM/*.rpm'

(I dont have another computer available. I'm assuming this won't work on
windows.)
After I click OK another error message appears: No hdlist found.
I checked the hardware list and my cdrom drive, Philips cdrw 800 series is
listed as being reported to work with Mandrake 8.0 by someone in the
community.
So I installed 7.2 again, as much to have a bootloader as for any other
reason.
And that's where I'm at.
Is it time to look for another cd drive?
Any suggestions welcome. Well, almost any.
Thanks,
SW

   Scott, try this :

   1. download the patch once more (it's very small) and save it on your
   c-drive 2. insert a floppy, open a ms-dos prompt and type : format a:
   3. when done, change directory cd to the one with the patch
   4. type : copy patch.pl a:
   5. the screen will tell you that 1 file was copied.

I have finally been able to install an old

like
"unable to open /mnt/something/something/RPM. When
I logged out I saw a message something about "can't open the rpm database, if
you recently upgraded" couldn't catch the rest.
Can anyone help me out?

Scott, your problem seems to indicate a K6 - CPU , right ?

In this case point your browser to the Mandrake homepage and click
errata.
Once there, you'll find the explanation, and the fix : download a small
patch, copy it to a floppy, re-install 8.2 and, at the splash-screen,
press
F1 and type patch. That's all.

On the other hand : if you don't have a browser yet, I'll be glad to mail
this patch to you. Just let me know, OK ?

[newbie] installing nic driver

2002-03-08 Per discussione Scott Wagner

I'm trying to install drivers for my smc1211tx ethernet card so I can get my
cable connection configured correctly. I'm running 8.0. I have a couple of
questions about the directions that came with the cd before I try it.
The directions say to verify that you have the source code for your current
kernel version installed. How do you do that?
Later it says install the driver module in the proper location for your
distribution. This is usually /lib/modules/kernel-version/net/driver The
closest thing I have is /lib/modules/2.4.3-20mdk/kernel/net. I want to be
sure that that is the correct location to install the driver before I do it.
Finally, it says to run the following command as root to install the
driver:
install -m 644 driver.o /lib/modules/'uname -r'/net/
Am I really supposed to type 'uname -r', or does this stand for something
else?
Should I substitute this directory with the
/lib/modules/2.4.3-20mdk/kernel/net one?

Sorry for all the dumb questions,
SW

[newbie] cannot re-edit XF86Config-4

2001-07-25 Per discussione Scott Wagner

I had a problem with the X font server (Mandrake 8.0)starting so I took
someone's advice (not on this list) to change the port for xfs from "unix/:-1"
to port "7100". I changed this in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs. It didn't work. I opened the files from the command line
with vim and tried to put them back the way they were but I cannot write changes
to the file. I get error messages like "write error in swap file" and "write
error (system full?)" During shutdown I get the message "segmentation fault in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs". Can someone tell me how I can re-edit these files (If
possible) and what to do to fix the original problem, that suddenly xfs will not
start? The original error message was something like "default font fixed". I
tried commenting out "FontPath uix/:-1" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and x started,
but then I couldn't connect to the internet because of the font I was running.
This has been a problem with two differnt
installations.ThanksSW

[newbie] X won't start default font fixed

2001-07-23 Per discussione Scott Wagner

Hi
I got home from work today and turned my computer on, and was confronted by
the error message
could not open default font path unix/:1
Fatal server error:
could not open default font fixed
and X would not start. I have been told that one way to fix this problem,
at least temporarily, is to comment out the FontPath unix/:-1 line in
/etc/X11/Xf86Config. However I have not been able to access the file from
the command line. Pico is not not installed. I think I have opened vim
from the command line but have no idea how to use it. Is there anothe editor
I could use that doesn't run on X that is likely to be installed on my
system?
Does anyone know of any other solutions? Is this something that could be
fixed from the failsafe option from Lilo? I have never used that either.
Thanks,
SW
