Apparently I was wrong. I have an Epson Perfection 1650 USB scanner chosen partially because it is supported by SANE under Linux. I am running Mandrake 8.1 which has USB support. But the scanner does not show up in /dev/usb, though usbview shows it as present. And, of course, it doesn't show up --- nothing does --- in sane-find-scanner run as root. Excuse me for entering this question but David is right. I have a Epson Perfection 1650 that works pretty well. The 1250 is really out of question. You need to configure better your scanner Ricardo, and follow the instructions in the Epson site. It works very well i repeat Antonio Botelho de Sousa Portugal Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

[newbie] Unable to read partition table
Thanks to all of you that answered my previous e-mail. But really the question was not correctly formulated by me, so the answers are not what i expected. My fault. Try to explain better. First let me tell you about my machine: I have two hard disks hda , hdb and the first has three partitions: hda1 (Windows XP OS initializing files) hda5(Linux native) and hda6(swap). The hdb disk has the Windows XP system and is used as a store disk. There's also a CDRW hdc and a magneto-optical drive attached toa SCSI adapter that is sda. All this is correctly mounted in /etc/fstab and my /etc/lilo.conf has the append line to emulate the ATAPI CDRW as a SCSI one. Now what happens. When i switch the machine cames the LiLO screen. I choose to boot Linux. Thenext screen is the Aurora Welcome screen with the kernel version (Mandrake 8.1) in the upper left corner of the monitor. If everything goes right next we have a lot of messages scrolling the monitor showing the hard drives, the CDRW and the Optical drive. Then Aurora goes to the graphical display and the system boots to his end, and that's all. Now what happens to me? When i reachthe welcome screen the system stops a little and instead of displaying the information about the drives it sends a message: LDP: Unable to read partition table. Then the booting goes on apparently without problems. Butwhen i am in the OS if i try (as root) to type the command "cdrecord -scanbus", instead of displayng the CDRW and the Optical drive it says: cdrecord file or directory not found; cannot open scsi driver. And that's the problem. Question? Whyit can't read the partition table?that´s the true problem; the other is a consequence of this error. I use Mandrake since version 6.0 and i never had such a problem. I think i have been a little more clear now. Can anyone help me? Thanks Antonio.
[newbie] » Configuring Sound Card
Well, I have a OPTI 82C924 (really old) and I cant configure it in mdk7.2!... I had mdk7.1 and I managed to get it to wok (bad... but working) with thinks like pnpdump, pnpdump /etc/isapnp.conf and isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf. Almost everytime I rebooted i had to do this to make it work. BUT IT WORKED!! and now with mdk7.2 I cant even get it to configure it in sndconfig... (i guess sndconfig of mdk7.2 is too good 4 my card lol) so I would like an advice how to make soundcard run properly. thx

well, I already tried to upgrade but when comes the part of choosing the packets he sais that there isnt enought space to upgrade those packets and I dont know where can I choose the packets I want (or DONT want). He scans for the packets and asks if I want to install the second CD in the 3 modes (expert, costumized the easiest one i cant remember right now) and I dont have the second CD so, I click cancel and he sais again I dont have free space to do that. Ill try that URL Dan Labine gave me. and get back right 2 u. []

[newbie] local mail delivery agent problem
Hi, I recently upgraded to Mandrake 7.2. After the upgrade I started to have problems with my local mail agent. When I issue mail local_address or mail remote_address, I get a message like the one below. Can't create transcript file ./xfeAEI8LC01988: Permission denied queueup: cannot create queue temp file ./tfeAEI8LC01988, uid=1001: Permission denied I believe that it may be related to write permissions somewhere in the /var subdirectories, but do not know how to change those permissions safely. I use sendmail. I have no problems sending messages with KMail, only when I invoke mail at the command line. Anybody has ideas about how to fix this? TIA.
