Re: Bastille firewall [was: Re: [newbie] No connection via Linux]

I tried the 2.1.1 rpm and it came up at start up saying it does not work on Mandrake
9.1. I don't see a newer version on their site.

Femme; Is someone trying to use Bastille on a Mandrake 9.0 or 9.1 system? I
thought it woldn't work on those versions of Mandrake. Has there been a change?
I still prefer the firewall in Bastille, but I had to devise a work-around
in order to get it running a Mandrake 9.x . Please let me know if it works
now.

Bastille is a better firewall IMO

Thank you. The description on the web looks very good. I downloaded and
most probably installed it from an RPM i.586. I can see its files in
various directories, but one thing I didn't figure out yet is: How do I
start it? Typing bastille in root command line as recommended in a
manual
produces something like command not found...

There seem to be some very basic Linux things that I don't know yet - too

trivial to be mentioned in any FAQ - but I'll find them out anyway! :-))

lord i suffered with this when i started with Bastille...its not intuitive

so don't fret. At a command prompt type Interative-Bastille (or just
Inter
(then hit the TAB key)) and away you go. Be sure to get the GUIed ver (TK

or Curses version) its far simpler IMO as well.

[newbie] OT - Personal Database Applications

2003-04-02 Per discussione bpx
I apologize for the off topic post, but I have been searching for a personal
database application for linux. I have a friend that is making the transition
from MS to linux and she is hoping that their is something that can replace
her old dBase III (She didn't care for Access and didn't see a need to change

from what worked.).

The vast majority of what I run across seems geared for the programmer and web
based engines. Does anyone know of a basic database app that would be appropriate
for her?

In your Mandrake distro, Open Office is installed - and you can create
databases with that - as well as being in conjunction with MySQL or
PostSTress, er, PostgreSQL...

I wasn't aware that Open Office could do the interface. I'll check out their
web site for more info.

Thanks.

Barry - I haven't used it, but Star Office handles databases, basically in
a
spreadsheet format, but there's a form designer with it. That's about all
I
know about it.

SO 5.2 had an add on called Adibas (I know I trashed the spelling on that one.).
But, I haven't checked out 6.0 to see if it has the database app as well.
I'll look into it. Thanks.

Re: [newbie] ML 9.0 update mirrors don't work

2003-01-03 Per discussione bpx
I had this problem as well. Grabbing the urpmi update file after the initial
install corrected the problem. I had some other issues the motivated me to
re-install anyway.

Barry

Greetings,
I am trying to run Mandrake Update in ML 9.0 and get the dialog box (in
Gnome) which asks if I am connected to the Internet and would like to select

a mirror. I am and I would so I click ok. The list of mirrors appears
without a problem but none of them can be added successfully. I have been
through every mirror on the list and none work.
I know it isn't my Internet connection since I can surf and get email. Where

else can I check to begin troubleshooting this problem.

Re: [newbie] Cisco and Sound

You may want to take a look at

minicom

or

kermit for Linux

I wouldn't consider either to be a Hypterterminal clone, but they should give
you the necessary tools to do the job.
