[newbie] Internet connectivity problem

2002-04-24 Per discussione cervix couch

Once again I'm having trouble connecting with the Internet via Linux. I'm running LM
7.1

I start KPPP from the desktop and everything appears to proceed as it should. I get
the message Logging onto network, Netscape opens up, then nothing else happens.
Netscape freezes and it isn't until I turn off the modem that I get error messages
saying that it can't find the server.

I've tried pinging sites like yahoo by name and IP addr and nothing happens.

I've checked /etc/host, /etc/host.allow, /etc/host.deny and everything seems fine.
The firewall isn't up. Ipchains looks OK (to me at least). ifconfig looks OK too.

So what could the problem be?

Oh contraire, she sounds as she sounds and this list is detoriating to
more noise once again. The problem is when the noise ratio exceeds the
actual help ratio, and with this nonsense carrying on I can see it
happening with ease. If you folks want to chat socially, I suggest you
all grab IRC and go to the Mandrake or what-ever-channel.

Dude, why don't you just chill out?!?!?

This is not
the place, for the cutesy folksy noise that seems to prevade here, more
recently since uno-who joined.

Compared to some other lists I'm on, this list is hardly noisy, but when there's
this much traffic, it does make a good case for offering a digest form of this list
(hint hint)

Anyway carry-on I won't respond any more to this or similar threads.

Good!

[newbie] Linux-Netatalk-Mac Problem

2002-03-26 Per discussione cervix couch

I've installed Netatalk 1.5.2 in Linux and have enabled Appletalk on the Mac (OS 8.5).
When the Linux system boots, I see the line that says starting atalk, so that
appears to be ok.

The Mac never sees Linux. When I manually type in the server IP address (192.168.1.1)
on the Mac, I get a message saying No response from the server

I can ping between the Linux and Mac, so that's not a problem ;)

In Netatalk's afpd.conf file I have:

192.168.1.1 -transall -uamlist uams_clrtxt.so -savepassword -setpassword
-ipaddr192.168.1.1
-uampath /usr/local/etc/netatalk/uams
-uamlist uams_guest.so
-defaultvol /usr/local/etc/netatalk
-systemvol /usr/local/etc/netatalk

Does anyone have an idea of what the problem could be?

[newbie] System Getting Sluggish

2002-03-13 Per discussione cervix couch

I've been having a problem in Linux and I have no idea where to look for the culprit.

My problem is that, periodically, while I'm online (and only when I'm online), the
system will get extremely sluggish to the point where I usually have to power down and
reboot.

When this happens, there are sounds like there's a lot of hard disk activity going on
and it never stops.

I've tried unplugging the modem, but it doesn't do any good.

Does anyone know why this happens?

[newbie] Setting defaults for kppp?

2002-02-21 Per discussione cervix couch

I have kppp up and running but my problem is that if I'm logged in as root, the
default login name and password I've chosen show up in the initial kppp window, but if
i'm logged in as anyone else, the information isn't there and it has to be manually
typed in.

What would I need to do to have the default login name and password appear
automatically for every user?

Is there a particular file I need to set group permissions for?
I've set group permission for everything in /etc/ppp but that hasn't worked.
