Re: [newbie] Distro
This is the only problem I see with Linux. The fact that it is free to download and try all the distro's you want. I have tried Debian,RedHat,Storm(basically Debian) FreeBSD and MAndrake. I always end up back at Mandrake. I really like the DrakConf feature as I am a windows convert to Linux. The Newbie and expert Lists actually get read by mandrake staffers and are not so overloaded that your posts are routinely overlooked and going hand in hand with that the mirrors are not oveloaded either. Getting updates with the RH up2date feature can be an exhausting process. IMHO Mandrake is the best distro out there. -- John W

Mike Riffle Morgantown, WV USA http://web.mountain.net/~kneiper/rifrak.htm Montani Semper Liberi NRA NMLRA Friends of Fort Frederick Prickett's Fort Memorial Foundation Yes you can configure it. I use the @home service and have always configured statically as i have never had any luck using DHCP. To configure statically you will need the following: your hostname i.e. cx12345-a your dns domain, i.e. phnx1.az.home.com IP addy (obviously) xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Subnet mask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Default Gateway, usually your IP with the last octet changed to 1. I stress "USUALLY." Your DNS server/servers usually a primary and a secondary. For email purposes the server names and or IP addresses of said servers. proxy if you use one. I may be leaving something out I'm sure someone will clue us in if I am. If you run windows you can get the majority of this info by running "winipcfg" from the start\run menu. You can get your email servers by looking at the email headers or running "netstat -a" when you send and recieve email in windows. I would say to call your cable provider but unless you get a nice tech they seem to gaurd this info rather gestapo like. Good luck to ya! -- John W
[newbie] Mandrake online classes
I found this today via the Mandrake site. They are online tutorials/classes about running your Linux box with Mandrake. www.mandrakecampus.com. I have looked at the lessons and they are easy to follow and very informative IMHO. -- John W

[newbie] CD-RW and CDRom
I have just recieved a new sony CD-RW(xmas came a little early). I am curious about enableing the scsi emulation in the kernel. Bt doing so will I then lose the ability to use the standard CD-Rom drive? I am not terribly concerned by this as the new burner is considerab;ly faster any way but would like the idea of still being able to utilize the standard CD-Rom. Thoughts, ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated! John Wheat Merry Christmas to all!
[newbie] Mounting Win 2K partition
I am not sure if the default kernel in in 7.2 has ntfs support or not. I recompiled one of my own and added ntfs support for this reason of mounting a Win 2K part. I went to Linuxconf and selected "access local drive" then created a mount point, in my case /min/win_C and then manually entered "ntfs" case sensitive and selected the group of id of my username and read only as well as mount at boot time. I am able to access my 2000 partitions from Linux now. I hope this helps. John Wheat

On Thursday 21 December 2000 13:43, you wrote: I have Linux Mandrake 7.2 and selected "Supermount" during install. I have since added a Windows HDD partition that I want Linux to be able to access. How do I do that please? Thank you. Enter Linuxconf as root and choose filesystems then choose access local drive. Select the appropriate drive IG /dev/hda1 then move to type and choose the appropriate filesystem. msdos I believe in this case assumiong Win98. Then you will select a mount point. I used /mnt/win_C or whatever drive letter you are mounting. Click the opyions tab and select any you deem appropriate. Next move to dos options. I usually set my user up as the owner and default user/group ID's. The windows partitions are reas only so I guess no harm done in that choice. Select mount then accept and you should be able to get to your windows drive/drives. Good Luck, John Wheat
[newbie] Kermel Modules
I have recompiled a custom kernel more suitable to my machine and tastes and all went well except the modules. I was not able to do "make modules" for the new kernel. I am relly not sure of what exactly I need to do when it comes to the modules. Do I need to remove the modules currently in /lib/moodules or am I just missing the command syntax for this operation. The kernel boots and I am currently running on it. I used the tutorial at www.hardcorelinux.com as a reference. Thanks, John W
