Re: [newbie] RAM hog
dear friend; i dont have specific info on mandrake 6.0 but it seems me as a general problem faced so often in linux world among newbies. trying to optimize startup services should solve your problem. if you start to many programs and services at the startup time, sure theyll hold to much RAM of you. on the other hand im quite sure about that, 64MB ram will be enough for you to run Linux with a very high performance, specially compared to windowz. by starting task manager you can also see which trivial services run at your system. i hope this idea helps you a bit. best regards; h.ozgur cagdas. I can't open a program for very long without it freezing up on me. Why is it using so much RAM? I have 64MB of RAM. What can I do to optimize the system? Re: [newbie] 56K MDC modem not working...
andy...im not sure about that this modem is not a win modem. the probability of using system resources by this device is very high if it's onboard. on the other hand you have to be sure about that you have enabled your onboard modem from bios settings. but the best way to get specific info about your modem is to contact with the manufacturor. if you can't find their site, try finding it from www.windrivers.com. i hope you achive your goal and remove windows from your system FOREVER. best regards; Ozgur. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] 56K MDC modem not working... Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 12:33:25 GMT Dear all, Please help - I am only one step away from configuring Linux (Mandrake 7.1) and removing Windows from my machine FOREVER :) At present I can't get Linux to recognise my modem - I am pretty sure that it is not a Winmodem (there isn't anything anywhere that says it is a Winmodem - the words "HSP, HCF, or DSP" do not appear at all). It is a 56K Main-Daughter-Card clone, not a PCMCIA card, but built on the mother board. If I were to install the drivers under Windows the Modem will come up under: '? Other Devices' - '? PCI Card' in the Device Manager and would run in COM3 (ttsy2). Yes - it was not listed under `modems' in Windows, but under '? Other Devices'. Although when the Windows driver was installed it magically changed to a modem!?! I didn't try on configure it while installing Linux. I have tried kppp since installation and then tried to communicate with it, but it says that the modem is busy? So I presume it is there - just doing something - maybe a lock file somewhere? This is all the information that I can obtain from the modem: MODEM 56K MDC COM 3 IRQ 5 Address D800 Manufacturer - Compact Flash Technology The laptop is a Chicony MP-995 machine. What I can get from the manual is: Intel BGA-1 on board uPGA-1 socket for Celeron Intel 440MX Any guesses / answers? Should I have configured it whilst installation - or does this not matter? [newbie] 128mb ram is detected as 64mb by linux
dear newbies; i have 128mb sdram running on my system. My bios, windows and benchmark programs detect it as 128mb too. but under linux mandrake 7.0 i see it as 64mb. I made a little search and learnt that ive to add line "append="mem=128M"" at the end of my lilo.conf file but it didnt work too, at least i think so, because my linux system resource meter still shows it as 64mb. If my config were succesfull it would show 128mb, right? im a little bit confused about this, pls help. tnx all! _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
