Re: [newbie] Cable modem setup

However, I seem to have gotten stuck on my cable modem configuration. I have att@home and should be using dhcp to obtain my ip address. Basically what happens after I stop and restart the netowrk is getting the IP address fails. Any help with this would be much appreciated. @home gave you an ID number. It's in the form of Cxxx-A. In windows this is the name of your computer (control panel - network - identity tab). In linux, set that as your host name, use dhcp, and your cable modem should fire right up. The easiest way to set the host name is to go into mandrake control center, then network-connection-configure. the only downside is your bash prompt will be [user@cxxx-a user]$, although there's surely ways to change that. There's a still easier way to specify this. Travel to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts Edit your ifcfg-eth0 file to include (at the top) the line DHCP_HOSTNAME=cx{your details here]-a This worked fine for me, and avoids the silly hostname prompt. --mapdock Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] Installing DOG/bad sym link?
I'm running Mandrake 8.0 on a i586, I'm trying to install the book mark editor DOG: http://apps.kde.com/na/2/info/vid/2873 DOG (Data Organizer) is a personal knowledge manager based on topic maps. Currently it is spezialized in managing bookmarks. It imports and exports Netscape, Mozilla and KDE2 (XBEL) bookmark files and imports KDE1 kfm bookmarks and Windows IE Favorites. When I try to install the Mandrake RPM package I get this error: Found 0 source and 1 binary packages Dependency Problem: libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 is needed by dog-0.4.1-1mdk I've tried doing this, while in /usr/lib as root: ln -s libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.a libstdc++-libc6.1-2.a.3 ln -s libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 ldconfig I've also tried doing this cp libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 ldconfig Still get the same Dependency Problem Error. I'm I doing some thing wrong, or can this simply not be done?
[newbie] HP710 printing with CUPS?
When I got my upgrade CD for 7.2 in the mail, I feed it to my machine and this cool looking LASER Printer icon showed up on my desk top, don't know why. But I went a head and set up my HP710 printer. Every thing worked fine, got a very nice looking test page out of it. However yesterday, I did a complete reinstall. Now I can't get any thing to print. The printer is hooked up locally on the parallel port. I've tried (K)CUPS to install my HP710, using the data base on the upgrade CD etc., but every thing just hangs up at the end for some reason. For example if I try to install using Linuxconfg/Printer Config that icon turns gray and nothing more happens after I tell it my printer is a HP710. I have seen the message CUPS Dammon not running come out of KCUPS, but if I look with the Linuxconfig/Control Panel it says it IS running, doing a 'ps -A' shows cupsd running as well. They seem disconnected some how. So how to get back to being able to print? Also when a program dies, likes seem to be happening with KCUPS here, how do I get it to go away? In Windoze I used the three finger salute CTRL-ALT-DEL. [newbie] xemacs missing libraries?
I wanted to install xemacs, but the package manger tells me it is missing a couple of libraries, libld*.so.1 and libl*.so.1 some thing like that. I can't find them, where are they?

[newbie] Can't read CD drive after install 7.2
I just installed 7.2 from CDROM, and that all went fine, reading every thing from the CD set. However after I reboot the CD drive no longer functions. I get messages like "Don't have permission" even when I'm logged in as root. Or some long line about "bad FS, bad super mount ... on /dev/hdc" error '32'. As the boot messages scroll by I see /dev/hdc SONY CRX-140E. So at some level some thing in the system knows a drive is out there, and it has identified the drive correctly. It seems like some thing in /etc/fstab is wrong, but I don't know how to fix it, nothing I've tried has fixed it. This is a IDE R/W drive, as master, but right now I'm only interested in getting the system up and running, where Read Only usage would be fine. -- For information on any of the following check out my WEB site at: http://www.csonline.net/bpaddock/ Chronic Pain Relief, Philadelphia Experiment, better Spelling via UNIFON http://www.chipcenter.com/circuitcellar/crparciv.htm http://www.uCOS-II.com
[newbie] Re: PATH variable mess
Hi -- I'm running 7.1, and I noticed early on that the PATH repeats itself 3 times on my system in "X" consoles (konsole is my fave). I noticed also that at a virtual console (ctrl-alt-f1, for instance), the PATH is as expected -- no duplications. I injected "echo"s into the logon scripts, and concluded, finally, that it's the initialization of "X" which does the repeating. The duplication isn't really a problem, as the shell quits looking at PATH once the executable is located. In the case where the executable isn't located, it may have looked at the same directories 3 times, but that's what disk caching is designed to speed up, isn't it?! Heh, heh... Just another example of how complex systems can be ahem! difficult to keep tidy. -- I hope you and yours are prospering! --Paddock --- Registered Linux user 190974 ( 2000-Oct-05 ).
[newbie] RE: Windows can't be written in VB
Mr. Mark Weaver -- Good sir -- No, Windows isn't written in VB. Windows is written in assembly language. Additionally, Windows is a "DOS Shell", even '98. The only version of Windows which is a true OS is NT, and that's only because it's the version of OS/2 which IBM was working on when the M$/IBM divorce happened (early 90s?). That's why M$ called it "NT" -- because for them it was, well and truly, "New Technology". (For that matter, still is!) Remember: "ME" is just "NT" with a new name. That M$ took OS/2 and ruined it so thoroughly is indicative of the culture of M$. Remember: Gates' primary motivation is to eliminate any and all competition. Whether the silly software really works is literally at the bottom of his agenda. DOS works fine as a single-user, single-program platform. It got f*cked up when M$ tried to make it multi-tasking. Talking about history, the only reason M$ got the IBM PC deal is because people at CP/M wouldn't return IBM's phone calls. CP/M is the original pre-emptive multi-tasking OS for the PC, btw. -- I hope you and yours are prospering! --Paddock --- Registered Linux user 190974 ( 2000-Oct-05 ).
[newbie] Re: init respawning X multiple times
Buchan Milne, sir -- Thanks for your answer. I am going to have to get really brave and try what you say. Bravery is required because I have no clue what "fix X" entails, sigh. I'll be fully backed-up first, however, in case it turns out that I do need to reinstall the OS! -- Take care! [newbie] Re: Seti at home
Hi -- I had the "illegal instruction" thing, as well, when using the "i686" version, and the "i386" version runs very well. I guess the "i686" version does, indeed, include one (or more) ops of which my CPU is ignorant. Oh, well. I downloaded the program from the Seti site itself (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/unux.html). Note that what the "-nice 19" option does is to tell the kernel's scheduler that this program is to stand in line behind all others (of a "lower nice" value) which are marked "ready-to-run". This does not intrinsically reduce CPU consumption by this program, it just makes sure other programs get first shot at the processor. The "xosview" CPU utilization line is nearly all yellow for me now, and CPU utilization always shows 100%. -- --Paddock --- Registered Linux user 190974 ( 2000-Oct-05 ).
Re: [newbie] network card detected....can't use internet
Hi -- I got the same message from Netscape about the $SOCKS variable. It left me stymied, and I don't like being stymied. I had to keep swapping back and forth to/from Windoze in order to get my e-mails (sigh!). CAVEAT: I am a first-time install of Linux, not an upgrade; if your /etc/resolv.conf file is already in place (and intact!), please ignore the following. I found my answer on a Netscape newsgroup, in the form of the /etc/resolv.conf file. Mine looks like this: domain centex.net search centex.net nameserver 208.6.232.10 nameserver 208.6.232.12 (modify the names dot-addresses to fit your ISP, of course!...) and, suddenly, Netscape was able to find the internet. I am still grateful. HTH. Cheers! --Paddock --
