[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Our First Ride

2011-03-01 Thread surfswab
I think I've mentioned this before in a post about bobbers.

My uncle started his own motorcycle shop next to our house when he got
out of the army after WWII. Among his personal collection of bikes
was his favorite Indian, which he had stripped down bobber-style.

I was about 6 years old at the time (yeah, I'm that old) and whenever
I heard him crank up that bike, I'd come a'runnin'.
He'd swing me up to straddle the tank (no pillion, no sissy bar), and
off we'd go.

They didn't make mini-bikes back then or I'm sure I woulda had one.
Did have a couple Whizzers and a Harley Hummer when I got a little
older. Been riding ever since.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] First Ride

2011-03-01 Thread Michael Bosworth
First ride for Mike.
Well, I had a Dad who had an Indian when he was younger and a railroad
telegrapher in remote, rural California just after WW2. But in the late 1960's
when I was 15 and my brother Jeff 13, we didn't really know that, and just
wanted to dirt ride and I wanted some cheap street wheels. So we teamed up,
bought a 'barely used' Suzuki 80 for a song from a motorcyclist dad who
dirt-rode with his son and had bought the Suzuki for mom (who never played
along...no cycling interest). We taught ourselves to ride on that, but quickly
sold and purchased a used Honda SL175 that I rode for years. Jeff and I still
ride, 43 years later. Jeff has a liter bike Yamaha FZ-1 (sports bike for
geezers...) and a Kawasaki Vulcan 750. I have two near identical 1984 Honda
Nighthawk CB-650SL. We keep two bikes each, so we can fly cross country and
ride with each other (and he for sports/cruiser flexibility, and me for
parts/maint). Recently, my son Josh joined our 'long distance motorcycle
club'. Josh, another long flight away in Southern CA (vice Jeff's NoCalifornia
and my Vienna VA) has a BMW and a Ninja 500.

Now I motorcycle commute spring-summer-fall (38 miles round trip daily) and do
the occasional solo canyon carving out Middleburg and Blue Ridge way, or a few
short tours each year (DE, Norfolk, PA). The Nighthawks have been very
dependable (I really don't need the running parts bike, or at least haven't
yet.). During the winter, I don't lay them up, but just take them out on a
mid-day, weekend day for short spins. Now in March in Vienna, northern
Virginia, I sometimes do a short commute (4 miles to Metro and free MC
parking...). By April should be back to full commute.

 Hello All,
Recent thread brought to mind that we haven't had a thread
about our first ride on a motorcycle.
I've been asked - many times - how long I've been riding
motorcycles. The answer is - literally - longer than I've been alive.
Rumor has it, that before my Mom was certain I was coming She and Dad
took off for a weekend on their 1983 Goldwing. Thus, I can say, that I
have literally been riding bikes since fetal times. Its literally in
my DNA! Unfortunately, with me coming along - Dad sold the Goldwing
and bought something smaller and cheaper. I honestly don't remember
 what. When I was around 6 - I know he had a 650 Suzuki and he wasn't
riding it (hard to do with three people after all) and sold it. Fast
forward about 12 years and I bought my 82 450 NH - a few months after
 he bought a Harley.
Anyway, floors open - what do you remember about your first ride?

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Our First Ride

2011-03-01 Thread jaybird248
My first ride was a Cushman Road King scooter. Big, boxy 300+ lb.
thing, 5 hp, couldn't get out of its own way. Except for one day, that
is. On an ill-advised highway trip to the upstate New York mountains,
I got frustrated with the scooter's 35 MPH top speed on a long
downhill. So I threw it into neutral and let it fly. Passed cars, 18-
wheelers, everything. Probably hit 100, or at least it felt that way.
(There was no speedometer.) Good thing there was an uphill following,
or the brake (rear drum, no front) likely would have burned up. No
Cushman ever flew faster! Eight bikes later, I still may not have
beaten that speed on my 750 ... but I've tried.

Hello All,
Recent thread brought to mind that we haven't had a thread
about our first ride on a motorcycle.
I've been asked - many times - how long I've been riding
motorcycles. The answer is - literally - longer than I've been
alive.
Rumor has it, that before my Mom was certain I was coming She
and Dad
took off for a weekend on their 1983 Goldwing. Thus, I can say,
that I
have literally been riding bikes since fetal times. Its
literally in

my DNA! Unfortunately, with me coming along - Dad sold the Goldwing
and bought something smaller and cheaper. I honestly don't remember
what. When I was around 6 - I know he had a 650 Suzuki and he
wasn't
riding it (hard to do with three people after all) and sold it.
Fast
forward about 12 years and I bought my 82 450 NH - a few months
after

he bought a Harley.
Anyway, floors open - what do you remember about your
first ride?

 Graham,
I remember seen a guy in the ADVrider.com forum that has a 750 like mine,
and he added hand protectors from a Suzuki Vstrom. I think he had to do
 some

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 83 cb550 help carbs

2011-03-01 Thread Graham Rogers
JR, no bout about it, you have an '83 550. That's the only year they
made it. I may be wrong on all this but I had caffeinated coffee so
I'm up for a while any way.

The T's you are looking at are
1. the middle one is the fuel line from the pet cock
2. the two outside ones are overflow tubes that originally had
tubes connected to them and running to the rear of the carbs and
down . Check that there is no gas leaking under the carbs from the
T's. If so, the O-rings are probably shot and need to be replaced.

If not, I doubt your problem is in the T's.
Have you removed the carbs and cleaned them, the jets and all passage
ways? If so, did you check the size of the jets, the pilot or low
speed jets in particular using a wire made for the purpose?
Is the inside of the tank clean and free of rust, same with the fuel
valve (pet cock)?

Start with answering these questions.

tubes connected to them and running to the rear of the carbs and

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1985 Honda Nighthawk 650 - Ready to ride! - $1200 (Columbia Heights)

2011-03-01 Thread Javier Garcia
Graham,

$15 sounds like they are worth to try. That bike seems to be in good
condition, I think it could be a good opportunity for someone to get into a
nice NH.

Javier.

Hey, I found a pair of universal hand guards/protectors on eBay for $15 so
 I'll give them a try.

[Nighthawk Lovers] News from Christchurch

2011-03-01 Thread Dennis
Night Hawkers, let it be known that one of your own in Christchurch, the
shaky city, has returned to the Internet airwaves.

You've already heard much the news from down here about the earthquake and
about what specifically happened to me (many thanks Graham for passing the
news onto the group). It was an amazing and scary experience.

So, a week later, here's a summary:

I think my apartment building will be condemned along with everything in it.
The good news is that I was able to pull most of what was important to me
out of there. An, that included my second Nighthawk. It was down in the
parking garage and was thrown over on its side from the center stand. The
right handle bar is up maybe two inches. It's drivable but looks a bit
weird. It started right up though smile -what else would we expect?.

So, I've gotten most of my stuff out and my two beloved bikes (85' and 86'
700SC's). I've shifted to my girlfriend's house and we've decided to give
living together a go (which I'm very happy about). My workplace is still
down but they're setting up temporary offices and should be up and running
within the week.

The government here is very progressive and they've got various programs to
help folks who haven't a place to stay or who've lost their employment.
Their emergency services for this sort of thing are amazing as well.
Search and Rescue crews who've come in from Japan, the US and other
countries have commented that the civil defense organization they
encountered here is the best they've ever seen.

That said though, things are still a mess.A city of 300,000 and as much
as 50% or the buildings in the central business district may be taken down.
A huge area is off limits and ringed by police and military. 55,000 out of
work due to the closure of the central city. Death toll will probably
exceed 200. Two major buildings just pan-caked and the tallest building in
the city, a 26 story hotel, has a serious lean and will have to be taken
down.

I was deeply impressed by everyone's concern here when I was finally able to
log on and get my E-Mail. Thanks, Night-Hawkers, it made me feel good to
see all the comments and offers of support.

They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Well, here's hoping
that's all true. It's been and interesting week and then some.

Cheers, my friends, and thanks,

Dennis G.
