Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Foiled again!

2011-04-14 Thread Kurt Nolte
Well, I managed to get a couple things accomplished, despite less than
stellar luck on the retail end of things.

Lessons Learned, Thursday Edition:
1) Don't trust "live inventory" for stores, even major ones. Call to ask.
The 17mm allen bit that was listed as "in stock" at a local FLAPS was, in
fact, in stock... at a warehouse some three hours away. It will be here
Friday morning, and I will pick it up before classes.

2) Chain lube: it's not just for chains anymore. I was fighting to get the
grips off my old handlebars. On a whim, I pried up a bit of it with the
screwdriver, shot a brief squirt of chain lube under there, and the grip
practically slid off on its own! Wash with soap and water, and voila, fin.

3) Parts monkeys wanna sell you the expensive stuff. EOS. Sorry dude, I'm
not impressed by flash, blingin chrome. Certainly not impressed enough to
give you $45 for a pair of grips.

4) Flat black looks /good/ on a set of stock pipes. Oh yeah. That's just
/sexy/. It'll look even sexier when the other half of the pipes are painted;
I ran out of the right high temp paint!

5) and not related in the slightest to the 'hawk, is thus: Before ordering
parts on a pre-loved car, check to make sure that your major bits are
appropriate for the chassis number. Tim and I ordered front struts for the
Super-B based on the chassis number (A "late '73"). I went to reassemble the
front strut assemblies, only to discover that I was trying to put late strut
cartridges into early housings. FML. Luckily I'm still a day inside the
30-day guarantee, so the exchange should be simple.

Bwha.

Oh, and she may be affectionately referred to henceforth as "Madam Bruise."
I'm certainly ending up with enough of them because of her (new ones on my
ankle, dropped tools while disassembling the handlebars... ratchets hurt
when dropped from 4'!) and she's a black and blue colour scheme already...

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: First Accident with my Nighthawk.

2011-04-14 Thread Kurt Nolte
See, there's what I need. I need a girlfriend with more riding experience
than I. She could save me anytime. :D

OH. Speaking of attractive women and motorcycles, one of my neighbors came
by while I was working on the bike last time around (when it was almost
completely apart). We talked for about half an hour about Nighthawks in
particular; she's thinking about getting one herself, and wanted to know
which one I had and what I thought of it. I recommended it quite neatly, and
added that I've found them really easy to work on (because I have) and told
her if she got one, at least she knew who to come talk to for maintenance
and such.

Too bad she's married. :(

Anywho.

Glad nobody's been seriously injured! I've had instances of "now when in the
name of all that's hellish did I do /that/?" with respect to injuries
before, though usually they didn't involve ripping nails off.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] changing cam chain

2011-04-14 Thread Allen Thomas
Hi Fabio, why does he think you need to change the cam chain? Are there severe
rattling noises coming from the motor? Usually people only know they are bad
when they break. 5Km is only like 2 miles and a bad cam chain at that
low mileage is unheard of. Besides even if there is chain noise there should be
a tensioner you could adjust.

I had a garage tell me once that my carburetor was leaking oil when I
had only taken the car in for an inspection, which in TX doesn't
require popping the hood. One, if the carb is leaking oil I've got
more problems than that garage could handle, and two, that car was
fuel injected.

Hey Jim -

Just wondering - I also live in the Bay Area (Peninsula - San Mateo)
and just acquired a 2002 750 NH (19,000 miles in good shape). Would
you happen to have any good recommendations for local service/
maintenance shops/mechanics that are reputable and do a great job? It
would be ideal to have some references for the work that's beyond my
(limited) abilities (even with a shop manual). Thanks in advance.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: changing cam chain

2011-04-14 Thread Joey Kelley
If I might offer another point of view - and it depends entirely on
your relationship with that mechanic - is it possible that he is
suggesting a repair that, although might be prudent, might even be
necessary if the bike were to go another 100,000 miles, isn't really
worth it for the value of the bike.
I once had a garage tell me that during a normal oil change
the entire top half of my engine would need to be rebuilt. First of
all, it didn't - second of all - when they called me into the bay to
show me the 'problem' they referred to it as a coolant leak (this was
a Pontiac BTW) however where they were pointing was most certainly the
intake manifold. Third - if they had done the repair - estimated at
$5000 US - the car would still have been worth $4000.
I didn't go back there.
Just a thought!

A carb sync can never hurt the bike, and might just make it run better.
However I'm going to stick with my thoughts that you're carbs are a bit
gummed up. I would run two tanks of seafoam treated gas through it. Then
adjust the carb needles, then sync them.

2011-04-14 Thread Scott McKinley
I have taken two teaspoons of SeaFoam so I am cleaned out. I can't get the
same results when mixed in the fuel tank? Life is good with SeaFoam! The
problem is it cost more that whiskey. I may go the sync route first. What
can I expect for cost?

With a sudden onset of the problem I'm inclined to think dirt now, too. See
if an additive/cleaner will solve the problem, if not you might need to take
more aggressive steps and drop the bowls to physically clean them out.
You'll undoubtedly need clean gaskets if you go that route, however.

2011-04-14 Thread surfswab
Pretty bike.

Dunno if I'd spend $3500, but only the market will tell if it's worth
that. On the other hand, I already have one, so what do I know.

Market prices here in the south range from $1500-$2500 from half-way
decent to pristine shape. I've seen some advertised in the
neighborhood of $3000, but don't know if they actually sold for that
when all was said and done.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: changing cam chain

2011-04-14 Thread surfswab
Fabio,

Replacing the cam chain is fairly complex, labor intensive job
requiring "splitting the cases" (dismantling the lower part of the
motor) and the labor charge is probably worth that amount of money if
the mechanic is trustworthy and skillful.

The question you need to ponder is whether it's practical to spend
that kind of cash on a 26-year-old bike with 50,000 km. If it's in
good shape otherwise and you plan to keep it a good while longer, it
could be money well-spent. It's doubtful you could find another
serviceable bike for the same $720.

I'm selling my Black 2000 Nighthawk 750 with 3000 miles. The reason

fine, it's just when I need to move the bike around that I have
trouble. At age 65 the back, among other things, isn't what it used
to be.

The bike is perfect in every detail. I put Metzeler radials on it,
added a K&N filter, put in a new battery, added a center stand, did
the muffler modification and changed to foam grips. Oil and filter
are changed each spring (Mobil1 and Purolator PureONE filter).
Washed, dried and chain is oiled after every ride. Seafoam added to
each tankful.

I bought the bike with 1800 miles on it and have only put on 1200
in two summers. I also have a small clamp-on windscreen that came
with the bike. Additionally a Honda shop manual.

I love riding this bike. I've owned BMW's, Yamaha's, and Honda's
and this by far has been the best bike I've owned. Great handling,
comfort, and 45-50 mpg (it's $3.99 here for premium here). Stored
in a heated garage. I've not been caught in the rain on the bike.

Looking for a good home for the bike. I can deliver it within 300
miles. (delivery cost are negotiable)

Price: $3500. Firm.

 Thank You.

Hello my name is Jim and I have been lurking here for a couple of
weeks.
I have had some problems with my Harley generator and the cost is way
too much to
replace, so when I have a problem I look for a shop that rebuilds
starters and generators
alternators too. usually not too bad a price around 100.00 here in
Silicon Valley in California
since gas is at 4.39 a gallon.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Well now I'm really annoyed (GS-1000 update)

2011-04-14 Thread Joey Kelley
Well I have taken the wussy way out - I've got an appointment with the
local Suzuki dealer next Tuesday to start a carb clean out and rebuild
if necessary.
I'm afraid I don't have the experience or facility to deal with carbs
- and I get very nervous about them.
When I get the bike back, (about a week - depending on parts) we'll
address the electrical issues and or replace points and such. (That I
can handle!)

[Nighthawk Lovers] Starter for 84' CB650SC

2011-04-14 Thread Gene Henry
Anyone got a starter for a reasonable price for a 84' CB650SC?

I thought I had a weak battery, but jumped it directly to my car battery and it
still cranks slowly, with intermittent slows/almost stalls.
Going to tear it down, but just in case I need one..

I'll keep looking for it. NAPA doesn't have it around here.

you were using it on a gas tank (I haven't done this yet, but am going
to in the near future), you would pour it directly into the (sealed)
tank, and just let it sit in there for a day or two. The liquid
discolors as more rust is disolved into it, but seems to work just the
same (or so it seems). This stuff is not suppose to hurt paint in any
way (so the sales guy says, and shows), but I haven't tested that part
of their claim on my parts yet.

Hope this helps! Joe

2011-04-14 Thread surfswab
Had a 750 do that. Petcock diaphragm was the culprit.

Fix requires new plugs, or clean the old, new oil and filter, check
the air filter for gas saturation and crankcase breather apparatus for
raw gas. Don't run it till then.

Messy, but relatively easy.
