Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Nighthawk with disappearing oil

2012-03-04 Thread Stefano Ascari
Tinkrmann,
Thank you for the information.
What is the best way to do a compression check? Is there a kit that you can
buy somewhere? Also, are valves generally hard to replace?

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Nighthawk with disappearing oil

2012-03-04 Thread tinkrm...@yahoo.com
Actually what I said in a previous post still applies: only take the calve
cover off and bring the cam lobe down with both valves closed and check
clearances. If there is clearance and a squirt of oil doesn't affect the
reading with another comp ck, it's a valve. If there isn't clearance adjust
and try again.
I've been working on engines since I was 14. I am now 66. I have never been
wrong in my diagnosis and I have never used a leakdown test to determine engine
problems. The oil shot works. And a visible inspection is better than trying
to determine if a valve is not closing. It's likely you will have to remove
the valve cover anyway.

Okay Mechanic might be right...valves could be unadjusted. That can be
checked with compression leakdown tester.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Cafe Bars

2012-03-04 Thread surfswab
Same here with a 750 I just moved. Used the redneck method (down a
small hill onto the tailgate) to get it on and my Harbor Freight 2x12
"kit" ramp to get it off.

Piece a cake.

But the weight was marginal for my urban sissy truck (Ford Ranger
stepside). Lifted the front just enuf to make steering a little
nervous. Wouldn't want to travel very far that way.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Tips on new-to-you, but otherwise old, bikes

2012-03-04 Thread surfswab
If you mixed it with gas, it must be the old formulation.

If I'm reading his post right, the new water-based stuff is meant to
be used as a dip (with the carbs dismantled), which defeats its
original purpose as a lazy man's carb cleaner (carbs intact).

I remember you guys talking about it, so his comment confused me,
unless he meant the new stuff can be used with either gas (carbs in
place) or water (carbs removed and dismantled).

Hmm.

I tried to attach them but they were too big apparently so it got rejected
so I uploaded to PhotoBucket and embedded them instead.

[Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Website is active!

2012-03-04 Thread surfswab
One of 'em would be me. We've had an unusually mild winter here. Got
some rainy residue from those godawful tornadoes north and west of us
this week, but the jetstream has kept most of the severe stuff away.

I'm champin' at the bit (!)

[Nighthawk Lovers] Seat won't latch

2012-03-04 Thread Kevin Green
I'm so confused about my seat, which latches on the right side just fine,
but not the left. Any ideas on what else I should check before I start
filing the hook to catch? I feel like that's a hack, but I can't find
anything to adjust or that's in the way. I'm starting to wonder if my frame
is twisted a little? Thanks for any input...

Here you can see the latch hitting the front of the hook on the bottom of
the seat. I can unbolt the latch but it doesn't have any adjustment to
move it up or anything. Similarly the hook is straight and bolted tight to
the bottom of the seat so nowhere I can adjust it.
Here you can see that the rubber between the hooks is making contact all
the way across the seat so I don't see how the seat could get any farther
down, although there is a big gap under the rubber foot that is farther
back from the hooks, and the gap on the left foot is much bigger than the
gap on the right foot (right foot not pictured here).
