RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: My Bike Won't Go into First

2012-05-07 Thread Pastor Ron
That has been my thought. We talked about the side stand switch before. Page
296 Clymer. It says the test for continuity in down position is only between
the yellow/black and --grn. When the stand is up there is continuity
between the grn/white -- and grn. The bypass would then be to connect the
two outside posts.

I don't understand why he put an extra kill switch on the handle bars? Or
where the wires are running.

I am wondering about the previous wiring tie in. Could it be that the kill
switch is grounding out on the handle bars or the odometer is grounding out
by connecting to the frame?

Do all your indicator lights work properly before you put it into gear that
is, the neutral light, side stand light, and high beam indicator work? And
more importantly do they all stay on or work except the neutral when you put
it in gear and it cuts off?

If one of your indicator lights don't work except neutral you've narrowed
down the problem to that loop. If your high beam, turn signals, or horn
don't work after it shuts off your problem is a ground there. You can't run
them to long with the engine off or your battery will go dead.

My bike is rigged to a toggle switch under the handle bars. It's kinda
ratty, but I love it that way. The power to the digital odometer the
previous owner had on it remained on. It just kills the engine. The
fuse box appeared to have no blown fuses. The next step is to take the
tank off or get my hands on a shop manual (I only have the owners
manual) and try and identify the possibilities and work backwards from
there...If anyone knows any other things that could be causing my bike
to shut off when I put it into gear let me know.

Did you try unplugging the kickstand switch. I'm not sure if its circuit should
be closed or open in the up position. The neutral switch is obviously working
and the clutch switch should only prevent starting.

I was told if they want it, they just put dollies under the wheels. But I
don't know if that is true. I would consider a large chain, a light pole

Looking for proper size, recommendations for models or brands... I /don't/

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Tires and wear

2012-05-07 Thread Allen Thomas
34 PSI is really low for a front tire, on my Nighthawk I got about 16 on
the Pirelli Sport Demons, on my VFR I got about 14 on a Pilot power 2CT.
Both of those tires are pretty sticky and soft. Rear tires went at about 8
and 6K respectively. I run mine around 40 up front and 38 out back. From
what I understand you run them around 35 if you are doing a track day since
the pressure of them will go up higher when under constant stress.

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Tires and wear

2012-05-07 Thread Graham Rogers
Yeah, I heard from a friend there who has a GSX1400 that over 600 or 650 cc is
$500 and under that is $400. I was surprised at the used bike prices. I
thought they were lower than around here, specially for crotch rockets and
sport bikes. I thought it may be because of the high registration fees.
Back to your tires. I don't think I've ever heard of a tire lasting longer
than 12k miles. I've seen so many 700S front tires that wear cupped and have
shorter lives. Seems to be a common thing on the 700S, Graham

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Tires and wear

2012-05-07 Thread Dennis
Graham,

Sorry that you had to return here on such a sad note.

I run all four tires on the two bikes at about 34 PSI.

Yes, Harleys are here. In fact, the WOF inspector I talked with today was
a Harley guy and another fellow I talked to worked for the Harley dealership
just down the road and he said he was bringing Harleys down for inspection
every day or so.So, they are definitely here.

But, the Harley 'mystique' is here as well. And by that, I mean that some
folks just ride Harleys simply because they like them. But others are
caught up on all the Harley belt buckles and Harley labeled this and Harley
labeled that. "$400 for a little Harley-Davidson chrome doo-dad? Sure,
I'll have three to impress people". I think you know what I mean.

I've thought of selling one of my 770SC's because registration here for
anything over 500cc's is really dear these days ($500 and up). Should be
interesting, if I do, as I don't think there are any other 700SC's in the
country except for my two.

"Get your rare imported motorcycle here. Step up, step up. Only $15,000!
Be the first on your street to own one." (smile). As the Tui commercials
say, "Yeah, right!"

Cheers,

Dennis

I got the '85 in 2007 and I immediately put a set of new Avons onto it and I
got the '86 in 2009 and I immediately put a set of new Dunlops onto it.

I bought both of these bikes with about 10,000 miles on them and they both
have about 24,000 now. So, they've each gone approximately 14,000 since
their tires were new.

Today, when I ran the '86 with the Dunlops though the New Zealand Warrant of
Fitness tests (we have to do this every six months here in new Zealand) I
was amazed to find out that my front Dunlop has worn down sufficiently that
he said he'd almost failed me and for sure I'd have to replace if before I
came in again in six months.

Originally, I thought my Avons were the softer tire (softer equals better
grip through curves but they wear out sooner is the way I think it goes) so
I'd expected that the Avons would be the ones I'd have to replace first.
But, it seems like the reverse is happening here.

I looked at the patterns on my tires (see the photos) and I can see the
Dunlop has a line right down the center whereas the Avon has the lines in a
wave pattern with breaks. Not sure if that means much.

So, is 14,000 miles a reasonable mileage for needing to do a replacement?
And, did I have it backwards about the Avons being the softer tire? And,
what do folks think about Avons verse Dunlops in general? Or are you keen
on some other tire brand that you think would be well suited for a 700SC?

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Testing 15 amp fuse update

2012-05-07 Thread Allen Thomas
It should be a direct hot wire feed and a common ground to each light. Two hots
for the front since they have running lights. Since the stalks and bulbs don't
care about polarity it should work no matter how you plug them in.

Although unusual, could it have been that one of the filaments on the bulb u
replaced shorted over both (assuming it's a two - filament bulb) and drew
enough current to pop the fuse?
Just my conjecture...

I just bought a Triumph Street Triple and am now selling my
Nighthawk. Doubtful anybody on this site is on this side of the
border to purchase, but was hoping to get some info on what price I
could sell it for. It is American and has about 17,000 miles on it.
Custom Corbin seat, frame installed to attach luggage (can have the
textile ones I bought for it).

Thanks,
Mel

If you have a Cycle Gear nearby they sell cargo netting. Any of the major
retailers should carry it online. Bungee cord net with rubber or plastic
coated hooks, usually $7-12 for a decent sized net.

Break for lunch with the fam. :)

Came back this time and started the bike, rev'ing occasionally and running
the signals from side to side. Fuse is continuing to hold.

Weird.

Anywhere along the circuit it could be shorting out. I think now you know
why the PO took off the blinkers. You don't have to fix them if they don't
exist.

Nope. Fuse holder is clean. Bike only has 7k+ miles and has been babied to
the max.

I began by pulling off the headlight and looking inside the bucket.
Everything looks solid. No bare wires that could touch metal. Everything is
surrounded by plastic. Then I popped a fresh fuse into the socket and tried
the blinkers. They both blinked although the right side was blinking more
slowly. I went to check to see if one of the bulbs was out and then the fuse
blew. Put in another fresh one and tried the blinkers again. This time, both
left and right signals blinked at the same rate.

This last time, I left each of the signals on for about 2 minutes each. They
both blinked at the same rate and the fuse held!!

What gives?

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1997 CB750 for sale in Victoria, BC

I just bought a Triumph Street Triple and am now selling my
Nighthawk. Doubtful anybody on this site is on this side of the
border to purchase, but was hoping to get some info on what price I
could sell it for. It is American and has about 17,000 miles on it.
Custom Corbin seat, frame installed to attach luggage (can have the
textile ones I bought for it).

Thanks,
Mel

Wise words - think I'll sit on (pun intended) the GS-1000 for
another season and we'll see what happens next year.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] ST 1100 Update

2012-05-07 Thread Pastor Ron
If it is any consolation, I first found a Concours on CL before I found my
ST. My said at the time, we can't spend the money now. I am so glad she
did. It was only a short time till I found the ST, which was newer and a
better. My thought is, be patient, things will work out. If you sell the
other bikes first, you will have money in hand and it is an easier sell for
you wife too.

[Nighthawk Lovers] 1997 CB750 for sale in Victoria, BC

2012-05-07 Thread Melissa Perkins
I just bought a Triumph Street Triple and am now selling my
Nighthawk. Doubtful anybody on this site is on this side of the
border to purchase, but was hoping to get some info on what price I
could sell it for. It is American and has about 17,000 miles on it.
Custom Corbin seat, frame installed to attach luggage (can have the
textile ones I bought for it).

Thanks,
Mel

I have been looking for some 5 and 6mm push rivets for my ST. The OEMs are
1.73. Ron Ayers has them for $1.53. Has anyone found a cheap alternative?
I would like to take off some of the fairing to do some maintenance work. I
was told to have a bunch on hand since they can only be reused about 3
times.
