Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Buying an '83 Nighthawk 650

2015-03-13 Thread Kyle Munz
High Jean,

That is a high mileage (kilometerage?) bike but as long as it was well
maintained that's not necessarily a problem for these bikes. That's about
the right price though if all it needs is cleaning and tune up. If any
major parts are missing though you might consider passing on it. You can
quickly end up spending more on eBay than what the bike is worth. One
particular issue with that bike is where the wiring harness plugs into the
back of the fuse block underneath the headlight. The plugs can get loose
which leads to arcing which melts the plastic. Another thing to listen for
is cam chain slap if you can get the engine running. The tensioner gets
loose over the years and replacement parts are hard to find.

Thanks! I hope everything will be well with it tomorrow when I see it. I am
really excited about it. I spoke to the seller a bit today to get his
address and get some more info at the same time. He bought it from his
friend 2 years ago and didn't ride it since. He says that when he bought it
from his friend, he hadn't seen it and thought he was getting an '82 and he
wanted to make a cafe racer out of it, but the styling didn't work with the
'83, so he just left it in his garage. He claimed to be a motorcycle
collector, and by looking at the pictures of his NH in the ad, there are a
lot of other motorcycles in his garage.

We'll see tomorow :)

2015-03-15 Thread Greg
If I may, buying a bike is the best purchase I've ever made. It will give you
the best return for your money. I bought one for my 30th birthday. My wife and
3 kids supported me. My daughter passed her motorcycle class at 15and 1/2 years
old. The person at the DMV was confused when giving her the license at 16. Be a
good Dad and teach your kids about life and living it and loving it. A bike
will do all that and much more.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Buying an '83 Nighthawk 650

2015-03-15 Thread Jean-François Therien
I am planning to do just that. When we got the Shadow last year, the kids
loved sitting on it and pretending to ride it. We're on the lookout of a
50cc motocross for them too, every time they see one they ask us for one.
Now the best thing with them is I can get them to wash the bike for me in
summer while I do something else. They do a pretty good job!

When I was their age, my father had said he'd get my brother and I a
motocross, but we ended up with an 80cc Yamaha Moto4 quad. That quad was
the most fun I had with any quad, even when I got past 25 years old.. I
still have it, but the whole thing is in really bad shape. The engine
starts, but it won't move without stalling.

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Buying an '83 Nighthawk 650

2015-03-15 Thread Jean-François Therien
I just came back from seeing the nighthawk, it wasn't as clean as I thought it
would be: some rust, paint was scratched and scuffed, chrome was peeling off.
The seller couldn't find the keys either, so we couldn't check the gas tank
either. The seller works at a dealer and he picked up the NH that the previous
gave as a trade in, so he never saw it running either...

On the bright side, before leaving, my wife asked me if the price was good, so
I checked kijiji to see if there were any other listings, and a new one was
added less than 24hrs ago. 100$ more, but road ready, 17000 miles, '84 model,
paint and chrome in good condition. The only worry I have is that it was
outside all winter, underneath a tarp/blanket, otherwise seller says the bike
was stored inside a heated garage previous years.

I would think your concern would be mostly, if not completely cosmetic. If it
looks good, being outside one winter probably isn't a big deal.

I spoke to the seller, I'll test drive it next Sunday :)

RE: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Buying an '83 Nighthawk 650

2015-03-17 Thread Jean-François Therien
I went to see the '84 650 this morning, it had a few plastic tarps on it, not
too much snow on it. Paint and chrome are in very good shape. The forks have
some light rust sprinkles that are easily wiped off, fuel tank looks rust free.

The front wheel was locked due to the calipers being seized, either due to ice
or rust, I don't know. I could hardly pull the brake lever also. The battery
was dead as well. I bring my battery on Friday to try to start it.

2015-03-17 Thread Graham Rogers
Gunk and corrosion will be seizing the calipers. You will need to take the
system apart and clean, probably Same with the clutch. Carbs will probably need
to be removed and cleaned before it will start. Bought a 1983 650 in the fall
in worse shape for $100, Graham

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Buying an '83 Nighthawk 650

2015-03-17 Thread Allen Thomas
+1 Graham knows what he's talking about. Locked up calipers are pretty
common on a bike that has been sitting. Even if they weren't locked up I'd
recommend taking them apart along with the master cylinder, as they are
sure to be full of snot, and the master cylinder return port is probably
clogged. New seals are cheap.
