It's nine years old and been sitting.  I would replace.  On a car, maybe keep
it, but you only have two wheels.  One tire goes, and you're in trouble.

I appreciate everyones thoughts so far!
So heres a follow up question -
How long is a tire good for? This front tire has got about
12,000 miles on it - its about 9 years old - its the only tire I've
had on the bike.
The tread is fine - but - the bike did sit for 7 years in my
Dad's shed.
So - should I replace it while I'm at it? Or can I run with
just replacing the rear?
          Thoughts???

Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Reality Check - Please say it ain't so!

2010-09-04 Thread Kurt Nolte
The tire I ended up going with was much cheaper than the Contis. I
picked up a Kenda Challenger, as it has a fairly good lifetime rating
for a rear tire, decent handling and is meant for touring. Since I
daily my bike, I figured a long lived tire was more important than a
super-sticky tire, and anything had to have better grip and handling
than the worn out monster I was replacing.

$80 for 150/70/17, and then I paid $20 for it to be mounted, balanced,
and state tire disposal fee.

So, it may not seem so, but if your guy's price includes labor for

 wheels, it's a deal.
