Agreed. My review of Planet Earth is: what IS this? These are
definitely the rehearsal sessions from Rainbow Children and Musicology.
I'm happy to hear him playing interesting guitar a little more, but I
wish he'd play more guitar on less hokey songs.

Couldn't he have sold Sony that C-Note album or something? Rainbow
Children?
Then maybe people would actually HEAR that album? This Sony/Motown stuff
is hard to listen to. I am clearly an indie label Prince fan, I guess,
because this is two of these crappy albums in a ROW. I hope he has some
bootleg something planned.

That being said, I think it would take Sign O The Times Part 2 to

that's what happens.

I've always said that listening to a new Prince album for the first time is
like an adventure. You're never sure exactly what you're in for, and Planet
Earth is no exception. Unfortunately this is one adventure that isn't worth
the trip. It has it's moments, but it also has more than its share of duds
which weighs it down.

Sometimes I really have to wonder what's going through Prince's head.
Between the whole British newspaper thing and the album itself, it's as if
he's trying to deliberately jeopardize distribution deals. What major label
will want to distribute future releases?

Sure, I'll by the CD when it's released and maybe I'll hear something
different then, but for now I'm really disappointed.

P.S. What's all this nonsense lately about Prince and Beyonce?

  yeah the

I felt the same way about Parade. In fact it took me about 10 years before
I could appreciate Parade. At the time of its release, I was looking for
something else (more along the lines of Kiss--a very misleading single in
terms of representativeness of the album) and was disappointed by Parade.
Only years later have I come to appreciate that album in all its

Not saying Planet Earth is a Parade. But it IS interesting. There are
enough standout tracks for me, and the rest, I'll give them a spin every now

Regardless of what musical style made the term iconic in music; we know
Prince is just using religious imagery in the same way he's done
countless time. I mean how is this any different than the song 7;
which is full of religious imagery. As for it being used for something
trivial; I don't know. I read the lyrics someone transcribed and while
I'm not exactly sure what he's singing about exactly; doesn't sound
trivial :)

Honestly, I think this entire album probably sounds better live. Think about
it. How many of you were feeling the 3121.com version of Guitar? I was
happier with the Planet Earth version personally. Maybe that is a part of his
design (doubtful), but theres a good chance this sounded better when he
performed them live than in studio.

Oh well, now if we could just get a concert that isn't halfway across the

There are maybe 3 gems in an album of 10 tracks. I think most of these
tracks ar left over from TRC, ONA, Musicology and 3121. -Derek

I don't know if that's true. If you listen to the radio (which sadly I do
periodically), the same songs are played over and over and over again. Not
ONE of them that I hated did I grow to like. Accustomed to, maybe, but
like, let alone appreciate? No. For example, anything at all by AKON. :)
Even some of Prince's music has never grown into anything I enjoy. Rainbow
Children in its entirety, Jughead, You Got the Look..to name a few.

But sometimes, a new listen, a new time in your life, a new moodthat
can change everything about how you hear something. Or read something.
There have been books I could NOT get through. But later, for a variety of
reasons, I'm picking it up again and getting into it.

Yo..I hated 1999, PR, Parade and Lovesexy upon first listen. Grow on me
is not a derogatory term regarding the music. We in this age are so quick
to
take a spin, listen to downloads, leaks etc and then be meh, it stinks!
without giving the music a chance to mentally marinate..to take it to a
bbq for
example and have an experience with it to engage you into the music. Not
giving an excuse for crap music but come on now. Princes jams the last
decade
haven't been THAT bad.

Moderator: Yeah, but they haven't been that good either. Nowadays I don't
buy albums anymore why? Because there are maybe 1 or 2 songs on it that I
actually like after a few listens. Not worth my 9.99 to 18.99. btw why is
the msrp of Planet Earth 18.99?!? What crack is Sony smoking? No wonder
there mad LOL -Derek

I do think that musically it is much more interesting than Musicology and
3121, in terms of production, arrangements, and composition. But yeah the
lyrics are really clumsy at points. I especially cringed at Lion of
Judah--coming from a Caribbean background drenched in Rastafarianism
roots reggae, you don't invoke the Lion of Judah for some trivial shit
about a girl. Slay my enemies--wha? Bob Marley is spinning in his
grave.

 I think that's pretty harsh. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece but I do
think the music on it is a lot more interesting (in terms of bridges, key
changes, solos, and orchestration) than Musicology and 3121, especially on
tracks like Planet Earth and Somewhere Here On Earth--two of my
 favorite
tracks on the album. My other favorites are Future Baby Mama and
 Chelsea
Rodgers--one a classic and classy slow jam (even if it has a ghetto
 title)
and the other a great dance track, something Prince hasn't successfully
 done
 in ages.

I do think the lyrics on most of the album are pretty clumsy, heavy
 handed,
and lack the kind of double entendre, creative word play, and poetry that
Prince mastered early in his craft.

All in all, it meets my 3-song minimum.

Moderator: So do you think it would of made a better instrumental album?
I was thinking that the other day. The arrangements rate higher to me then
lyrics. For instance you can dance you Chelsea Rodgers as long as you
tune out the lyrics and just dance. -Derek

The term does predate Rastafarianism and Bob Marley so I'm sure his use
of the phrase isn't intended to evoke either.
