[NTG-context] Struggling with ttf on Windows XP

2006-01-11 Thread Frederic Donckels
Hello,

I recently upgraded my 3-year old installation of MikTex to the latest version.
I had a document which contained glyphs from the windings.tff font. Once I
upgraded,
this didn't work anymore.

So I tried to read around to find out how it works, and so on, but couldn't
find anything...

I have generated an afm and tfm files from the ttf font.
I created a map file which references this.
My tex file apparently loads the map file without problem (at least pdftex
doesn't complain).

But, when I call \showfont, the generated table is empty, it doesn't contain
any symbol.

(I'm at work right now, so I can't post any code snippet)

Does anyone have any clue or could anyone point me to any resource to guide me?

Thanks,

Best regards,

Frederic

If someone can tell me which part of my redistro should stay, I can

since the minimals have many fonts, they are not that small; they use
the [10pt] subsets of cbgreek and cmsuper [karl bery and i hav ebeen
playing with subsets and if i'm right tex live now also ships with
subsets] which saves  many megs;

the minimals also don't have latex and other macro packages (only plain
tex as this is used in mptopdf); this may safe quite some megs (as well
as speeds up file searching) because latex ships with sourcetrees as well

also, nothing metafont is included

plus a subset of binaries, think of:

afm2pl
afm2tfm
aleph
dvips
dvitodvi
dvitomp
dvipdfmx
kpseaccess
kpsestat
kpsewhich
mktexlsr
mpost
mpto
pdfetex
pltotf
texmfstart
tftopl
ttf2afm
ttf2tfm
vftovp
vptovf

(+ xetex)
(+ some tool stubs)

it's still on taco/mine's agenda to set up a gforce minimal repos at
fabrice's server for packagers

so what do you use otherwise (instead of tetex)?

are the same versions of pdftex used?

Can you post the files someplace (tetex and non tetex variants).

(maybe the tetex context is an old one and does not use latin modern;
latin modern gives larger files due to extensive hinting - read: better
quality; if so, a 600 page doc will have the same difference of about
218 kb)

  Farsi (Persian) wich I believe uses the Arabic alphabet with some

  well, idris is using context for professional publications so rlt is
  possible ...

 In a recent thread with Mojca I give instructions to do basic utf-8 or
 Latin-transcription Arabic, Farsi, and Urdu typesetting in ConTeXt using
 Aleph and the basic unicode fonts that came with Omega. The font is very
 basic, though. Much more advanced stuff is possible as well, using better
 fonts, and I am working on an advanced Arabic-script typesetting system
 which, while still experimental, produces some of the nicest Arabic script
 available-) (I can send you samples if you like off-list)

 No manuals, but go here to get a flavor of things:

 http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/~d97ost/omega-example.html
 tex/context/base/m-gamma.tex
 tex/context/base/type-omg.tex

 You can use whatever font your client prefers, particularly if it does not
 involve a lot of ligatures or vowels (most fonts used in Persian
 typesetting are pretty basic in this regard, with the very important
 exception of Nastaliq, which TeX/Aleph cannot do quite yet...)

 As soon as Giuseppe and Hans get in sync on the future direction of things
 in the internals of aleph and pdftex-) we should soon have Arabic-script
 typesetting approaching a par with the Latin. Hopefully the two projects
 will merge soon, and there has already been some movement in that
 direction. In particular, the microtypography features of pdftex may
 hopefully be extended to include, e.g., glyph substitution to get optimal
 paragraph justification (since Arabic script does not have hyphenation,
 etc)

 Best
 Idris

Thanks very much. The OP is not a client but another eager TeX
novice. I relayed the information to him and he is busily
acquainting himself with the tools you mentioned.

a minipage is a box, but i think it's in paragraph mode.

 \begin{minipage}[position]{width}
  text
 \end{minipage}

Put two together

 \begin{minipage}[t]{.30\linewidth}
  text and images
 \end{minipage}\hfill
%
 \begin{minipage}[t]{.60\linewidth}
  text and images
 \end{minipage}

and you get two boxes horizontally across the page with the hfill
space between them

Put three together:

 \begin{minipage}[t]{.30\linewidth}
  text and images
 \end{minipage}\hfill

 \begin{minipage}[t]{.30\linewidth}

 \end{minipage}\hfill
%
 \begin{minipage}[t]{.30\linewidth}

and you get three boxes horizontally across the page with the hfill

Their vertical dimensions depend on the amount of content. They don't
cross page breaks.

[NTG-context] Reg. fonts and math

I have been using ConTeXt for a short time now, after I switched from
LaTeX. I find it quite great, but I have two queries regarding it. I
am using teTeX in Debian (unstable).

1. Are the Lucida Bright fonts used in the documentation part of the
   complete teTeX documentation or are they fonts which need to be
   obtained separately? I have read a thread about this on the archive
   of this list, and tried all possible combinations suggested there
   in vain.
2. The tutorial tells us to refer to other sources (The TeX Book) for
   more on Math typesetting. Is there any online resource which would
   explain TeX (as opposed to LaTeX) math?

Thanks.
