OT on Windows ME

2001-09-21 Thread John Cesta - Lists

I have been a member of this list for about a month. We are a small company
and I don't have the benefit of a large IT dept so I thought I'd throw this
question to you guys. My personal PC is a Windows ME PC. Today it started
doing something really weird. About every two hours it just kind of stops. I
mean, it still works and all ( although there is no more Internet access)
but it is very, very slow. Can't hardly move the mouse and I have to
shutdown too get it back. It's weird because it goes south almost like clock
work every 1.5 to 2 hours. I don't have a virus, I am fairly certain of
that. It actually happens all of a sudden, yea, I sat here and waited for it
to happen. It doesn't seem to be a gradual thing, I mean, it doesn't get
progressively slow, it happens all at once all of a sudden. It is a royal
PITA.

Any ideas? :

Thanks,

John Cesta

LaBrea is a small Linux-based application that puts unused

IP addresses on your network to use, creating a "tarpit"

which can stop or slow down scans of your address space...

LaBrea works as a low-level network application that creates

"virtual machines" on your network - machines that don't really

exist yet are able to answer connection attempts in a special

way that slows and even stops the connecting process...

Agreed - it works very well. I contacted a sales person recently regarding
PDF sales crap. She said - I'll turn that into our marketing people. I ran
the company's white paper through the distiller and sent it to her in email.
I love turning the complicated into simplicity and spinning the sales
people.

Some days, I love this stuff.

You could also install Adobe Acrobat and print to that. That will
produce a PDF file that you can then print anywhere or just read with

RE: W2K Print to file

2001-09-21 Thread Clark, Steve

More centralized - more complicated? It can be pushed across a network as
opposed to running to each wkst and mapping the drive. I don't know about
you but 90% of the time I've mapped through the GUI, it fails on reboot
regardless of the settings. Forcing through batch seems to work each time.
Regardless of the method, we both arrive at the same solution - I've been on
the end of touching each one and it gets old.

My $.02.

So do a net use to a bogus printer (will have to do the share on the

and remap to the port. Reconnect using a batch file in the Run key of

I am guessing no, cuz the dos program doesn't know windows printers, it
knows hardware lpt's... I think you will have to use the acro idea, or
one of your programs you mentioned. You could create the printer as you

RE: W2K Print to file

2001-09-21 Thread Clark, Steve

So do a net use to a bogus printer (will have to do the share on the server)
and remap to the port. Reconnect using a batch file in the Run key of
startup so you don't have to worry about someone removing by accident -
lusers.

I am guessing no, cuz the dos program doesn't know windows printers, it
knows hardware lpt's... I think you will have to use the acro idea, or
one of your programs you mentioned. You could create the printer as you
said, but then map another ltpx to that one, and see if that works...

Couldn't you just map a fake printer to a file - it would then prompt
the
user for a location and a name for a bit more control. In other words,
install a HP LJ II driver and send it to a file rather than a port.

Is that what you're looking for?

We have a 16bit legacy application that runs reports to dot matrix
printers.
We'd like to redirect this output to a file.

In Windows2000, can I configure an LPT port to redirect to a file?
I've seen previous utilities like Lpt2file and Redirect. Are these

Thank you in advance.

The issue I see here is that if the file is not in the recycle bin,
chances are it has been overwritten already.
Unless the file has just been deleted, or you already have an undelete

I have previously said that on servers for performance issues, but hardware
as it is, I've recently included Active Desktop on all workstations (25 NT

involves going back to IE4 and then upgrading to IE5+, though there may be a
shortcut.

Do you have a reason not to do this?

I use Time Warner Telecom for all my Local Phone and Data service. We've
been using them for well over 5 years now. They are a great company and I
highly recommend them. I have never had a problem with them and you can
actually contact someone who can get things done. I recommend them to
anyone in my area looking for an alternative CLEC other than the local Bell.
Data services are great too and the NOC is on the ball if there are
problems. Great prices on top of all that. If you want, email me privately
and I can provide you with more info.

RE: IIS with SQL?

Sounds like you need to change the DSN on the NT machine from NT
authentication to SQL authentication.

It sounds like that server is trying to connect to the SQL server, but there
may be some DCOM security issues.
Run dcomcnfg and check all the permissions, it will list them by services.
PS: You'll have to run it from both machines to get a true idea if IIS and
SQL are meshing.

Natively to SQL there shouldn't be any reason to involve IIS, however not
knowing your environment it's hard to say. Is the client connecting via an
browser interface? The possibilities are nearly endless...

I have an NT server that I inherited about four months
ago (long story). It's sole purpose is to house a
database that is updated infrequently. There are a
very few people that connect directly to it maybe once
or twice a month. They are not users on the system.
Quite frankly, I have no idea about the mechanics of
how these people connect, but I assumed that IIS must
have something to do with the process. I shut down
IIS on Tuesday when Nimda was new. I had the patches
applied to IIS, so Nimda should not have effected me
anyway.

Anyway, there is never any information in the IIS log
files when a user connects to SQL. A user has
connected during the time that I have had IIS services
shut down. However, I get a constant error in the
system log that says with event ID 10005 --

DCOM got error, "The specified service is disabled and
cannot be started" attempting to start the service
IISAdmin with arguments "" in order to run server.

What does this error mean, and is there any reason for
me to run IIS for SQL connection? I would greatly
appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Thank you,
Higgins

Has anyone had any luck reporting hack attempts to your webpage?
I can see them attempting to run scripts, from a certain IP address.
I can trace the IP address to who is registered for that address.
Frequently I then have a technical or other contact.
Is it worth my time to report the attempts? Can the originating IP addresses
be spoofed (i.e would I just be harassing an innocent party?)

Thx

Tom,

None of these things could work in our situation. Users use different ISP to
connect to Internet so their assigned IPs do not fall in any set range.

Dialup would be very expensive since users are all over the country. VPN is
also not in the picture.

Thanks for input.

RE: OT: Hawking network equipment

2001-09-21 Thread Matt Wehnes

I just looked at the Hawking 24 port switch. It's 300.00 and 3com switch is
around 800.00
If you buy the 3com you KNOW it will work and never have to touch it again.
I have 3 of the 24 ports their 3 years old and I haven't touched them since
i bought the things.

If you buy the Hawking for 300.00 You'll save 500.00 and NOT KNOW what your
getting. As soon as it breaks your out the 500.00 once you figure the cost
of 24 nodes with no LAN connection + your time supporting the thing.

Just my 2 cents.

I dunno about their switches, but their print server appliances are very

IE4 introduced Active Desktop.
Then they cut it our of 5 and 6.
But someone recently posted a shortcut on how to force the newer
browsers to install Active Desktop.

PS Don't do this to servers.

I've been having some problems with a cdrom drive under Windows 2000.
Sometimes when I insert a cd into the cdrom drive it will not get
recognized. I've tried 10 known good cds and none of them will work. (ie
the label and files do not show up in explorer). I then reboot the
machine and try the same 10 cds again and this time they all appear in
explorer. I did some searching and really didn't find much. Any
thoughts?

Subject: taskmgr.exe - Invalid Current Directory

I have an NT 4.0 sp6a server running only Microsoft RAS . Up until a few
days ago it was running flawlessly. Recently, we updated the antivirus
software. We are running Netshield engine 4.1.40 and have the latest .dat
file (4.0.4162). This was done because of NIMDA.

Not everytime, but usually 1 out of 5 times, when we attempt to bring up
the task manager (either by clicking the task bar or CTL-ALT-DEL and
selecting it), we get the following message:

The title bar of the popup contains "taskmgr.exe Invalid current
directory"
The message is: "The process cannot switch to the startup directory z:\.
Select OK to set current directory to c:\winnt."

We also get this message twice, when we first log on to the server but the
title bar of the popup changes... the first time it references
userinit.exe and the second time it references nddeagnt.exe

I have checked technet without any luck.

The event logs are clean.

The c: drive is FAT on this server.

Thanks.

Gary

IIS with SQL?

2001-09-21 Thread higginspi

Thank you,
Higgins

RE: IIS 4 performance on Multiprocessor box?

2001-09-21 Thread Diane Beckham
Title: IIS 4 performance on Multiprocessor box?

I did
this very thing on a NT 4.0 SP6a Dell Poweredge2300 with IIS 4.0 on it.
And yes it uses both processors.

I used
these steps (thanks to Anthony Bennett) and it worked
perfectly.

Diane

Adding a 2nd processor
Forget UPTOMP.
I have successfully used the following technique as provided by
Microsoft:
1) Put 2nd processor in
2) Regurgitated from archive:

I would recommend against using Uptomp.exe unless you have revision 3 of
the
NT4 Resource Kit. A simpler way to do this is to edit the hidden,
read-only
file called setup.log that's in the \WINNT\Repair directory and reapply
your
current service pack. Update.exe from the service pack relies on
information in setup.log for the proper files to install, it does not do
any
discovery process, so if the wrong information is in that file, a dual
processor computer can be blindly returned to single processor mode.
Six files in the System32 directory determine NT's multiprocessor
capability. NT is multiprocessor by default which is why we load the
mutliprocessor kernel during a fresh install. Later during that install,
if
only a single processor is found, we install hal.dll or halapic.dll and
rename it to hal.dll and copy in ntoskrnl.exe. Setup will also "smash
locks" on four other files, kernel32.dll, ntdll.dll, win32k.sys and
winsrv.dll to make them single processor versions. Failure to alter those
four files will burden a single processor computer with about a 5%
performance hit.
Therefore, the manual way to do an upgrade is, from a command prompt only
(using a GUI will give you an access violation) rename the current six
files
to *.old and copy in fresh versions of
kernel32.dll
ntdll.dll
win32k.sys
winsrv.dll
halmps.dll and rename it to hal.dll
ntkrnlmp.exe and rename it to ntoskrnl.exe
Of course, these had better be files from your current service pack and
not
from the original CD.
Now you're left with the problem of the setup.log file containing single
processor information. The next service pack install will move you back
to
a single processor version of NT. So edit that file with the following
information, being careful to enter the correct checksums which will tell
the next service pack not to "smash locks" on four files.
\WINNT\system32\ntoskrnl.exe = "ntkrnlmp.exe","e76ab"
\WINNT\system32\hal.dll = "halmps.dll","1a01c"
\WINNT\system32\kernel32.dll = "kernel32.dll","5b7f8"
\WINNT\system32\ntdll.dll = "ntdll.dll","59c19"
\WINNT\system32\win32k.sys = "win32k.sys","132603"
\WINNT\system32\winsrv.dll = "winsrv.dll","37b4e"
Do a notepad search on the individual file names to find these lines,
since
they are not together in setup.log. OK, now you're done. Or, edit the
setup.log first and reapply your current service pack. That's the quick
way
to do this.
=
Cheers,
Anthony Bennett

I have an existing intranet web server that I wish to replace
for performance reasons.  Context: although there will be background
indexing performed on virtual directories in ancillary web sites (multiple
sites each bound to specific IP addresses), the primary application will be
  only one website.
Question: Does IIS4 effectively use a second processor for
inet services or would it be a waste of money for the second processor?
Also , has anybody added a second processor AFTER nt4 installation?  I
know that the regular HAL will support 1-2 processors (and have installed
native on dual processor machines), but don't remember if you can add the
second processor on the fly (after OS install), or not??

make her go away, so money is not an object at this point. We also got a
letter from MS today explaining they have been informed that my company
distributes illegal software. heh.. gee I wonder where that came
  from.

  We
are going to try and find out which PC she recieved it from, and which
account, she couldnt have deleted it, else, what good is it. So we are going
to try and subpeona (sp?) all the computers she is in contact with, and then
have someone go through them looking for the word document. When we pull the
computer, Im going to run EZ-Recovery from Ontrack against it and try to pull
it back and then we will press for purgery, and jail time. As far as the ISP,
we own the mail server at the office, but anything they want would be there..

Just got back to work today. Got this at home, but couldn't
reply (relaying turned off to prevent spamming)
This is the sort of work I do. If I were in your situation,
I would let her introduce the evidence in court. In the mean time, you
attorney should be able to obtain a copy of the 'e-mail'. With this copy,
check the time and date it was supposedly sent. A summons should then be
sent off to your ISP for connection details and mail routing records. This
would certainly hurt her credibility and should make the rest of the
procedings in court lean your way.
On top of all of this, I realize this is a civil proceeding,
but purgery is purgery no matter what court it is in. By her entering this
evidence and testifying to that fact that she received it, she would be
purgering herself on the stand. This is punishable by jail time. If it gets
into all that, a forensic investigation could be done to show that indeed
she did not recieve the e-mail and that she typed it up herself.
Not sure where you live, but if I can do anything to help
you in this, please let me know. I am a  computer forensic investigator
in Kentucky and would be happy to lend a helping hand.

legalaties for email. My x-wife typed stuff up in word to look like an email and put threats and various obscenties in it.
There is no header info just says subject,to,from

word (and was btw!:) ).   Anyhow, I went online to mail.com, yahoo.com, hotmail.com,
outlook, outlook express, and aol.com and printed up
an email from each to show that this isnt what an
email looks like. I also printed the header info from both outlook and outlook express to show server transactions.
My lawyer is bringing in 'an email expert' to
certify the email doesnt show anything. Any ideas..
would be grateful   Although this is pertaining to my personal problem, it may be
interesting to know what the law is viewing as a valid
email vs. fraudlent email. I read up on some cases
online but most dealt with spammers and not holding
an email for an assault or contract negotation.   Thx to any who have some ideas!

Maybe I am being paranoid. I have a server that the eeye scanner says
is not vulnerable, I don't see any .eml files on it and when I scan for
files changed since the 18th, there are no .exes. However, when I look
at the task list, it shows 2 CMD.EXEs open. I have one open but not
two. Am I being weird here? The second CMD.EXE un-nerves me, but I
can't find any other sign of infection. Is there any one, "sure fire"
way to KNOW that the box has been hit? Is there one registry entry or
file or something that the virus ALWAYS does so I can see if the box is
hit?

I am thinking about re-building it, just in case, but if I can leave it
up, I would obviously prefer that. Any ideas?

First of all let me say that I'm not your lawyer and we don't have an attorney-client relationship.  This is not legal advice, just my educated opinion and so forth.

That out of the way...a piece of paper that is essentially a memo is hardly evidence.  Without the original "message" (which apparently doesn't exist) all she has is a piece of ill-formatted paper.  No signature, no fingerprints, no tracing information.  As is it's worthless as evidence of anything.  She could just as well have scribbled the note in crayon on a piece of felt.

Unless you have a documented pattern of such messages or she has reliable witnesses or something I think any of our people would have little trouble disposing of that "evidence" -- and maybe even turning it back against her by raising the very real question of whether she is falsifying evidence.

Also, the advice of some of our other posters has been fine but I have a minor nit to pick with their spelling though. The word is "perjury" which means making false statements under oath or affirmation.  Knowlingly submitting false evidence in a judicial proceeding (criminal or civil) would certainly seem to fall under the definition.  Your lawyer may want to point that out to her lawyer.

Best of luck and aloha,

Maybe I am being paranoid. I have a server that the eeye scanner says is
not vulnerable, I don't see any .eml files on it and when I scan for files
changed since the 18th, there are no .exes. However, when I look at the
task list, it shows 2 CMD.EXEs open. I have one open but not two. Am I
being weird here? The second CMD.EXE un-nerves me, but I can't find any
other sign of infection. Is there any one, "sure fire" way to KNOW that the
box has been hit? Is there one registry entry or file or something that the
virus ALWAYS does so I can see if the box is hit?

I am thinking about re-building it, just in case, but if I can leave it up,
I would obviously prefer that. Any ideas?

Both Trend and Symantec have a Nimda cleaner. You may want to run that.
Then do a virus scan

Thanks.

IIS 4 performance on Multiprocessor box?

2001-09-21 Thread Steven . Beckwith
Title: IIS 4 performance on Multiprocessor box?

I have an existing intranet web server that I wish to replace for performance reasons.  Context: although there will be background indexing performed on virtual directories in ancillary web sites (multiple sites each bound to specific IP addresses), the primary application will be only one website.

Question: Does IIS4 effectively use a second processor for inet services or would it be a waste of money for the second processor?  Also , has anybody added a second processor AFTER nt4 installation?  I know that the regular HAL will support 1-2 processors (and have installed native on dual processor machines), but don't remember if you can add the second processor on the fly (after OS install), or not??

A "Data T-1" is a DS-1. T-1 is used for voice only.

>From what I've experienced, it doesn't matter who you buy the T from.
Chances are, they're just selling it, and maybe providing support for a
certain portion of it. Depending on where it's going, you could have 3
different companies supporting the same line. And AT+T probably owns all
of the copper anyway, no matter who you buy the Smartjack from. If the
numbers are good, go with it. It's all about the $$.

It's OK Sabrina.
Don't let these "old-timers" scare you.  You are not the first
newbie to try and help out by posting a hoax that they thought was a real
virus.  Especially since there is a really nasty one running around.

Be sure to respond to
whomever sent this to you and let them know to check out viruses on sites such
as Symantec, NAI and such before they send them to you.  Believe me, if a
virus is running, this list will know about long before any User will and if
you stay on this list every day, so will you.
