Stu--would that be the same as the no override option for an entire

or is it something that is supposed to be set within the gpo itself?

In the Exam Cram book for exam 070-217 one of the questions mentions a
flow control option in the properties for a particular group policy
object
which will enforce the application of the policy at a lower level.

I cannot find this option or any reference to it on the Microsoft site

does anyone know of this? if so where do I find this option?

I suppose the question is:
What does your script actually do that standard services cannot offer?
I thought scripts were to supplement, not to control the system.

RE: NT Admin Jobs in Canada / USA ? Maybe a little off-topic n ow it's way off-sorry

2001-09-25 Thread Stuart Tonge

Thanks for all the help guys,

a few more questions:

(1) I had a look online last night for jobs in Vancouver, there don't seem
to be too many NT/Network admin/cisco networking jobs around there.
Can anyone tell me if this is representative of the true climate in
Vancouver at the mo, or have I just been visiting the wrong sites?

(2) If i was going to instead go to the states to work, where would be the
best locations for the above job types?
San Francisco maybe?

(3)Does anyone know how hard it is to get into the US/Canada to work for,
say 6 months just to try it out?
Will I have to get visa's and permits, or can i just go out there for a
while and then apply for jobs when i get there?

RE: NT Admin Jobs in Canada / USA ? Maybe a little off-topic n ow it's way off-sorry

2001-09-25 Thread Stuart Pittwood

Stu,

I know that you can't just turn up in Canada and apply for jobs, as
there are tax issues etc.

You will need a visa a work permit,

For Canada the best site to go to is http://www.cic.gc.ca (Citizenship
and Immigration Canada), also you could contact the Canadian Consulate
in London (http://www.canada.org.uk)

You can also get a temp work vis for info on that look at
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index-work.html. I have found from
personal experience that if you apply for jobs while you do not have the
relevent paper work (saying you are in the process or whatever) you
don't even get replies from agencies or companies.

It's nice to see you have really thought this through!!

You will need to contact the relevant embassy and request a visa. You can
do this direct, or pay a third party to do this for you. Either way, it is

Please see the email below is that fake or what?

Heads up.

 WORST EVER VIRUS (CNN announced)

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST !!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft
as
 the most destructive ever!

This virus was Discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine
has
 yet been developed.

This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital
information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to
all
contacts on your list with the title A Virtual Card for You.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes so
that
 the user has to reboot.

When the ctrl+alt+del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus
destroys Sector Zero, thus permanently destroying the hard disk.

Yesterday in just a few hours this virus caused panic in New York,
according
 to news broadcast by CNN.

This alert was received by an employee of Microsoft. So don't open any
mails
with subject: A Virtual Card for You. As soon as you get the mail,
delete it.

Please pass this mail to all of your friends. Forward this to everyone in
 your address book.

I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered
 recently.

If you receive an email called An Internet Flower For You, do not open
it.

Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll
files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up !!

Thanks in advance,

It's nice to see you have really thought this through!!

You will need to contact the relevant embassy and request a visa. You
can
do this direct, or pay a third party to do this for you. Either way, it

a long process with no garantee of success. I too would like to work

Thanks for all the help guys,

a few more questions:

(1) I had a look online last night for jobs in Vancouver, there don't
seem
to be too many NT/Network admin/cisco networking jobs around there.
Can anyone tell me if this is representative of the true climate in
Vancouver at the mo, or have I just been visiting the wrong sites?

(2) If i was going to instead go to the states to work, where would be
the
best locations for the above job types?
San Francisco maybe?

(3)Does anyone know how hard it is to get into the US/Canada to work
for,
say 6 months just to try it out?
Will I have to get visa's and permits, or can i just go out there for a
while and then apply for jobs when i get there?

We had a week of 30+ C this summer with high humidity in Toronto. You

RE: SirCam Virus Problem Exchange Server

2001-09-25 Thread Steve Muchai

I would not be suprised if these messages do NOT originate from home.com.
You need to check the headers of the messages, see where they are actually
coming from, then blacklist the systems and notify their admins.
Download one of these messages at a machine prefarably using Eudora,
Netscape or some other mailer. Outlook Express is also OK as long as you
don´t open the attachment. Highlight the message and check for the
internet
headers (in Outlook Express you´d right-click the message and click
Properties and then details). You´ll get something similar to:

This way you can block the offending systems using their IP addresses.

Check your DNS settings. If they seem correct use NSlookup to see if you

Hi all,

This must be obvious...but I'm stucked...

I got a Dell box, with W2K, SP2, configured as PDC with AD, running DHCP
etc. I have added another NIC to get connected to the Internet via XDSL.
I
have configured the new NIC with an official IP add., subnet, gateway
and
DNS, but still I cant surf on from the PDC or any other computers in the
domain. The strange thing is that I can ping the new NIC ip add. from
another internet connection. Any comment will be appreciated!

Just a quick one: Have you enabled IE to auto detect the connection? Do
you have any port filtering set on either nics? Make sure you have not
given the internal Nic a gateway it doesn't need it. To connect the
internal machines you are going to need a proxy/ISA or RRAS. Have you
given the external Nic the DNS addresses of the external DNS servers
from your ISP? Are you using forwarders on your internal DNS?

Can you ping valid IP addresses on the internet (like your Internet DNS

Can you resolve valid URL's to their IP addresses (like www.yahoo.com)?

The comment below about the gateway on your internal NIC is my best guess

RE: How do you enable attachments in Win 2k and Outlook 2k?

2001-09-25 Thread Daniel Kim
Title: Message

First
of all thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Let me clarify my
situation. Using the same version of Outlook 2k on a NT4 WS (SP6a)
or Win 2k Pro Sp2, I can view the attachments on the NT 4 WS but not on the Win
2k Pro computer. I've also tried using Outlook XP, still a no
go.

The
bottom line is, I can view attachments under NT 4 but not Win 2k. I was
told by another NA that this is a lovely "feature" of Win 2k. My question
is, is there a workaround for this? We'll soon be migrating all of the
workstations except 1 to Win 2k from NT 4 WS. I'd hate to disturb our one
user who has the NT 4 machine every time some one needs to view an "unsafe"
attachment.

Thanks
for all the pointers.

  Hi
  Kim,
  I've
been using w2k with Office 2000 and Exchange 5.5 for awhile now, since the
beta of win2k and the release of O2k, attachments show up by default. If
you're exchange server is less than sp3 for exchange 5.5, update that.
Also, MS released an Outlook client for Exchange 5.5 sp3 specifically, check
your technet subscription if you have one. I would patch Office 2k up to
sr2 if you don't have access to this. Is it possible that on your
exchange server someone configured a mailbox limit or attachment size limit
that you're not aware of? I know our Exchange server (before sp3) would
not always keep the information store defaults on max size limits for all
mailboxes. Occasionally, a user would have a different limit than
others, even though his/her mailbox was set to use the IS defaults.
Also, Norton Antivirus Corporate edition with exchange support enabled will do
this on the client side. If this is suspect, uninstall norton and
reinstall without exchange support enabled, all virus scanning will still take
place, read symantec's details for more, don't know the link off the top of my
  head. Good Luck.

Quick question. Is there an easy way to
enable attachments in Outlook 2000/Exchange 5.5 in Win 2k Pro? The
attachments are viewable under NT 4 and Outlook 2k/Exchange 5.5.
I know Win 2k disables the ability to view
attachments such as *.mdb, *.exe, etc. It simplifies our lives
considerably to email things from client sites back to the office via email
and its getting to be a pain because the Win 2k Pro WS won't allow us to
view the attachments.
Thanks for any help.

If you
open your web browser (assuming IE) and go to Tools...Windows Update...you
should be able to get the IIS hotfix rollup package. That should contain
all the necessary patches, but after installing you'll want to double check http://microsoft.com/security/for
any additional hotfixes/patches that are necessary.

Ask

I put in an MS Outlook rule to filter these newsgroup items to a special

First of all thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Let me
clarify my situation. Using the same version of Outlook 2k on a
NT4 WS (SP6a) or Win 2k Pro Sp2, I can view the attachments on the NT

The bottom line is, I can view attachments under NT 4 but not Win

2k. My question is, is there a workaround for this? We'll soon
be migrating all of the workstations except 1 to Win 2k from NT 4 WS.
I'd hate to disturb our one user who has the NT 4 machine every time some
one needs to view an "unsafe" attachment.

Thanks for all the pointers.

  Hi Kim,
I've been using w2k with Office 2000 and Exchange 5.5 for awhile
now, since the beta of win2k and the release of O2k, attachments show up
by default. If you're exchange server is less than sp3 for exchange
5.5, update that. Also, MS released an Outlook client for Exchange
5.5 sp3 specifically, check your technet subscription if you have
one. I would patch Office 2k up to sr2 if you don't have access to
this. Is it possible that on your exchange server someone configured
a mailbox limit or attachment size limit that you're not aware of? I
know our Exchange server (before sp3) would not always keep the
information store defaults on max size limits for all mailboxes.
Occasionally, a user would have a different limit than others, even though
his/her mailbox was set to use the IS defaults. Also, Norton
Antivirus Corporate edition with exchange support enabled will do this on
the client side. If this is suspect, uninstall norton and reinstall
without exchange support enabled, all virus scanning will still take
place, read symantec's details for more, don't know the link off the top

Quick question. Is there an easy way to
enable attachments in Outlook 2000/Exchange 5.5 in Win 2k Pro? The
attachments are viewable under NT 4 and Outlook 2k/Exchange
5.5.
I know Win 2k disables the ability to view

considerably to email things from client sites back to the office via
email and its getting to be a pain because the Win 2k Pro WS won't allow

   Is there a
known issue out there about not being able to "read" documents sent from other
locations via e-mail? An office in France sends files over (jpg, .doc,
gifs, txt, etc etc,) to Canada via e-mail..and they are not
  readable! The text is
garbled.when sent back to them, they (the creators of the initial file)
can read them. I'm running Exchange Server 5.5..but maybe my Unix
server (which filters the mail prior to going into the Exchange), has an
option disabled or is limited to the format (which in that case, becomes a
Unix problem so ignore,,,but if its exchange...?!) Is this familiar to
anyone? When France sends it over to UK or USA branches, they're
  readable...but not to ours.

RE: Microsoft Mail under W2K

2001-09-25 Thread Goldoff, Erik

Gets even older, you might also find reference to Network Courier, as that's
the core email system that Microsoft acquired when it was still a DOS
Character-Mode only. ATT folder structure for attachments, MBG for
mailbags, etc. The MMF format didn't come about until the Windows GUI.

That's it, Sir! Microsoft Mail as the product was named, consists of a
folder structure, the database, on any network share. This database is
called Workgroup Post Office (WGPO). The MS Mail client fetches messages
from the structure and publishes outgoing mail into the folders. Quite a
simple construction, and easy to corrupt or compromise ...

The WGPO Administrator as included in NT4's and W95's control panel is
used to administer the Post Office's users.

I used to have a comprehensive set of tools to administer my WGPO, e.g.
move users, watch mailbox sizes, check and defragment the structure, but
I left it at the company I worked for then :( I ran the WGPO built in
NT4SP3 and used PODiag and the other tools for MS Mail 3.5 - they worked
fine.

So I think we're talking about the same and please let me know where the
proper utilities are on the MS site if you find it out ...

Just to make sure that we are both taLking about the same thing, the

There
is a way yes. You need to download the AdminPack from the MS site and then
follow the instructions. I have set it up here and it works
fine.

I
don't have the URL anymore though unfortunately. I do have the files though if
you trust me to send them to you.

First
of all thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Heads up.

 WORST EVER VIRUS (CNN announced)

PLEASE SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST !!

A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by
 Microsoft
as
 the most destructive ever!

This virus was Discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine
has
 yet been developed.

This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital

information for its functioning are stored.

This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically

 to
all
contacts on your list with the title A Virtual Card for You.

As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the computer freezes
 so
that
 the user has to reboot.

Forward this to everyone

 in your address book.

I would rather receive this 25 times than not at all.

Also: Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was
 discovered recently.

If you receive an email called An Internet Flower For You, do not
 open
it.

Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries
 (.dll
files) from your computer. Your computer will not be able to boot up
!!

OK. Trends analysis response came back. Send us your serial number or we won't look at
it.

Not smart. I KNOW it's Nimda. I though they would want to see it and see if it was in
fact a new strain. I only sent it to them because once before they asked me here in
this forum to do so whenever we suspected a new strain.

I guess they are not interested. Too bad. I liked the Server Protect eval edition we

We just had our developer machines, running NT2000 Server hit with Nimda.

The strange thing is, we have Nimda protection in our email scanner, and all the
security fixes MS said should be applied. SP2 is installed.

The machines boot up, a log in screen displays, and they login. The Novell login
script begins to run as normal ( we run mixed network, NT and Novell), then the login
script box clears as normal, a blue screen appears as normal, and nothing further
happens.

Could this be a new strain?

First of all thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Let me
clarify my situation. Using the same version of Outlook 2k on a
NT4 WS (SP6a) or Win 2k Pro Sp2, I can view the attachments on the NT
4 WS but not on the Win 2k Pro computer. I've also tried using Outlook
XP, still a no go.

The bottom line is, I can view attachments under NT 4 but not Win
2k. I was told by another NA that this is a lovely "feature" of Win

If this is suspect, uninstall norton and reinstall
without exchange support enabled, all virus scanning will still take
place, read symantec's details for more, don't know the link off the top
  of my head. Good Luck.

Quick question. Is there an easy way to
enable attachments in Outlook 2000/Exchange 5.5 in Win 2k Pro? The
attachments are viewable under NT 4 and Outlook 2k/Exchange
5.5.
I know Win 2k disables the ability to view
attachments such as *.mdb, *.exe, etc. It simplifies our lives
considerably to email things from client sites back to the office via
email and its getting to be a pain because the Win 2k Pro WS won't allow
us to view the attachments.

Re: Exchange 5.5 and GroupShield

2001-09-25 Thread KPM

You need to have the following prereq's:
Before you install the Resolve Names Utility,

ensure the computer meets the following system

requirements:

On your server:

* Microsoft Exchange Server v5.5 with

  Service Pack 3 or later

* McAfee GroupShield Exchange v4.5 Service

  Pack 1

On each Workstation where you plan to

install the Resolve Names Utility:

* Microsoft Windows NT v4.0 with

  Service Pack 5 or later

* Microsoft Exchange v5.5 Administrator

with Service Pack 3 or later

Other requirements:

* Administrative rights to the local

  Microsoft Windows NT Server

* Service Account Rights for

  Microsoft Exchange

Strange though that sometimes the names are resolved, whereas others are
not???

From what I've read in the past, NAI blames this inability on a problem
with
the MS API. To get the information, install the resolve names utility. You
then run the utility against the quarantine database which will show the
 info you're looking for.

Ok - inside the Groupshield properties, click on the tab On-Access. At

blocking, All attachments and specified attachments. When you click on

Yeah, I had big problems on Compaq servers with array controllers.
The rollup package overwrites scsiport.sys with a newer file which does not
work correctly with certain array controllers giving lovely blue screens
when you restart (Stop 0xA Blue Screen Error). Caused major panic
with us until I found out what it was and used ERD Commander to copy the

RE: Lost permissions

2001-09-25 Thread Miller Bonnie L.

I've heard that this has happened to some people with earlier versions of
some tools.

If you really need to recover, do you have an ERD (or backup) and a test
box? If so, you might be able to recover the info by restoring to a test
box (with your ERD or other registry backup method). Then, export the info
in the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Lanmanserver\Shares key and restore it
to your server that lost the share info.

Better yet, if you haven't rebooted since, the data may actually also still
be on your original server under
HKLM\System\ControlSet01\Lanmanserver\Shares. Anyway, make SURE to back up
your current shares key first and use regedt32 to do the export and import,
not regedit. The import will overwrite the entire key, so be careful if
you've added anything since. Stop and start the server service and you
should be back up and running. Any shares created by nimda will probably be
there as well, so you'll need to run some sort of tool again or remove them
by hand.

You can use these as a reference:

OT: Internal training

2001-09-25 Thread John Brozycki

Sorry for the Off-Topic, but I think it has some relevance to what many of
us do.

How do you handle internal employee training, especially for custom
developed apps or non-mainstream software where you can't easily buy a
book, video, or CBT?

Does anyone develop their own training? Do you administer it by way of a
classroom environment, custom made or purchased Computer Based Training,
combination of the two, or something different? Is this work done
internally or contracted out?

If you do develop your own training materials what development tools do you
use (ie: a tool like Macromedia Authorware or Visual Basic) and how do you
deliver it (ie: CD-ROM, Intranet, classroom.) Are there any pitfalls
you've stumbled upon in developing your own training materials (ie: cost,
time, continuity between authors?) Do you include basic Windows literacy,
computer security, and/or company policies in this training?

Thanks for any information.

for desktop and server protection, but have Panda for Lotus Notes
protection (I think it's a good idea to have a double layer sometimes).
Panda was suggested by our Notes Admin guy, and it has not worked correctly
since! Currently it is only running on one of our 4 Notes servers, and I
don't think it is doing too well there! I'm about ready to dump it, and
have put Norton on the other Notes servers to make sure they are covered.
Anyone else out there use Panda, and would actually recommend it?

About every fifteen minutes or so, the .EML files are all back again.

I've heard about this- in fact, just this afternoon. In this case, I
recommended to my customer to quarantine the machine (read: remove the
network cable!) and run the NIMDA scanner/fix from the machine locally (you
won't have any other choice) and re-examine the machine when finished. That
solved their problem, but it did take time to do.

Sorry if my fix seems too pedestrian

DHCP-Release/Renew

2001-09-25 Thread Jeff_Johnson

We currently have Win9x clients for the most part on our network, and are
using WinNT 4 DHCP. However, I'm finding that upon lease renewal time, the
9x clients aren't always going out and renewing their leases. They
continue on with the same address they were given, but frequently the
subnet mask changes to a class B or A. (We use a class C).

The user doesn't notice a problem until they try to use an app on a
different subnet when (obviously) they won't be able to reach it due to the
bad mask.

The lease time is 10 days, we don't have anything special happening (as far
as I can tell), and I contacted MS about 6 months ago to be told this was a
bug in 9x clients and that I should upgrade to Win2k(of course). The
enraging thing is that it doesn't always occur on the same clients, nor is
there anything specific to those clients.

Anyone else seen this?

First alert, Maybe nothing.

We just had our developer machines, running NT2000 Server hit with
Nimda.

The strange thing is, we have Nimda protection in our email scanner, and
all the security fixes MS said should be applied. SP2 is installed.

The machines boot up, a log in screen displays, and they login. The
Novell login script begins to run as normal ( we run mixed network, NT
and Novell), then the login script box clears as normal, a blue screen
appears as normal, and nothing further happens.

Could this be a new strain?

 Is there a
known issue out there about not being able to "read" documents sent from
other locations via e-mail? An office in France sends files over (jpg,
.doc, gifs, txt, etc etc,) to Canada via e-mail..and they are
not
readable! The text is
garbled.when sent back to them, they (the creators of the initial file)
can read them.

The WGPO Administrator as included in NT4's and W95's control panel is used
to administer the Post Office's users.

I used to have a comprehensive set of tools to administer my WGPO, e.g. move
users, watch mailbox sizes, check and defragment the structure, but I left
it at the company I worked for then :( I ran the WGPO built in NT4SP3 and
used PODiag and the other tools for MS Mail 3.5 - they worked fine.

So I think we're talking about the same and please let me know where the
proper utilities are on the MS site if you find it out ...

This is strictly a peer-to-peer mail service - not a mail server

Yeah, I had big problems on Compaq servers with array controllers.
The rollup package overwrites scsiport.sys with a newer file which does not
work correctly with certain array controllers giving lovely blue screens
when you restart (Stop 0xA Blue Screen Error). Caused major panic
with us until I found out what it was and used ERD Commander to copy the
older file back into place. Now boots fine.

  Dear
  All,

Is there an easy way to install
all the IIS patches in one step?
I don't restart the server between each patch but it's a real pain
  installing several patches at once.
There must be an easier way.

RE: Another F(*^ virus! (OT)

2001-09-25 Thread RZorz
Title: RE: Another F(*^ virus! (OT)

I haven't worked with any of the other packages, so I can't compare. It seems to do ok, although they don't have any ALERT system, and always seem to be the last to get a definition out. I still don't know if they have the Vote virus covered.

They automatically create a logon script to push the defs to the desktop, so as long as you make sure the server gets updated before everyone logs on it works fine. Our work hours make this a non-issue. Remote users have a problem with the speed.

I do know that I gave up on active desktop scanning. It slowed my workstations down too much. I've been lucky that my folks get a lot of e-mail, but aren't big on downloading files. So I'm scanning Exchange and Outlook. Personally, I think way too many of the virii are being caught at the desktop rather than the Exchange server. They also have no filtering/blocking.

As soon as I can free up some money I'll most likely dump the Panda for Exchange and get Sybari.

A little off the topic here, but how do you find Panda? We use Norton AV
for desktop and server protection, but have Panda for Lotus Notes
protection (I think it's a good idea to have a double layer sometimes).

Hmmm, how obvious, everyone mentions the Microsoft way to get into safe
mode. Instead just accidently press the power/reset button during boot up
and the machine will boot into safe mode the next boot :-)

Who said you had to do things the M$ way :-)

Hold down the Ctrl key a few seconds before the Starting Windows screen
comes up.

This will then give you the boot menu options.

I always DL and install the latest SoftPaq before doing this fix. For
me, that has avoided this issue all together.

There's a note on the MS site indicating what to do before you run the
rollup. The directions basically say to update everything in CIM before
you do the patch.

Once that's done - it should be a snap.

Yeah, I had big problems on Compaq servers with array controllers. The
rollup package overwrites scsiport.sys with a newer file which does not
work correctly with certain array controllers giving lovely blue screens
when you restart (Stop 0xA Blue Screen Error). Caused major
panic with us until I found out what it was and used ERD Commander to
copy the older file back into place. Now boots fine.
