RE: Simple GPO/Application Deployment Question

2007-12-31 Thread Ken Schaefer
I wouldn't be created new OUs for this purpose. It typically goes against OU
design principles.

To the OP - why don't you create a Domain Local security group to put your
computer objects into. Use the security group to filter the GPO.

That's not to say a "Test OU" isn't a good idea - it can be. But place your
test machines in there, and then use security groups to filter the various GPOs
applied to the computers or VMs in the Test OU.

But I would NOT create an OU just to test this piece of software

I've set up the Office Compatibility update to deploy to those users who do not
have Office 2007 on our network. I chose to deploy this update based on
computer name instead of user. When I do this, I can only select one computer
name at a time in the Security Filter. My network is small, but this becomes
tedious. Is there a good practical reason I'm not seeing that allows me to
select multiple objects at once except when it comes to computer names? There
are just a lot of clicks involved this way and I would think Admins of a larger
network would find a better way.

Hello all.

Hope all is well.

Looking for thoughts and suggestions on storage management solutions for
environment. We would like a software solution that can monitor a data
sever and maybe scan PCs. Based on defined rules, it will remove data or
report for review.

We have looked at Veritas Storage Exec Small Business Server and it seems
like a great solution but wanted to see 1 or 2 more.

Thanks.

Leif.
I saw this on one of my machines.
Try restarting, click the link on the shutdown screen that says shutdown

Boot it back up and the icon may come back and let you see what updates are to
be installed.
It may take a while for the icon to re-appear.
Good luck.

"Not supposed?" There's no "not supposed" in there, at all, for the first
$900M or so of funding. Only after that amount is exhausted is the
program

restricted to OTA-only households.

And at that time, I wonder how they will determine whether a household
already has cable or satellite.

rufflage (I made up a word, hehe). That icon thing is just a major pain to

it’s a bit late to check the update site…

Subject: Windows update icon missing

Hi Folks,

In my lab I have a workstation that was sitting turned off at a shelf for 3
months. The other day I needed it and started it up again.

Now, when I want to turn it off, it is showing me that there are pending
updates that will be installed when I click on “Shut off”.

However, there is no Update icon in the systray, so I cannot review what
updates are pending.

How can I fix this? Google gives me thousands of hits on missing icon, but not
what I am looking for.

Happy New Year to ya’ll.

Leif

That's besides the point Mike. I understand what Leif is saying, it's one
of the most irritating things about Windows Update to me. Used to be, that
when you had an update available, the icon would show in the taskbar, and
stay there until you did something with it. Now, it sometimes shows when an
update is being downloaded, and then disappears. Extremely annoying, imo.

I need to configure this box to NAT/PAT for a new network (10.101.2.x/24) I
just brought online. This sonicwall is only going to be in service for a
few more weeks, as I'm migrating to a new ASA 5510. I did figure out the
routing on the sonicwall so it can get to the aforementioned network but
nodes on that network can't get to the Internet. Do I create a new NAT
policy? What am I missing?

Depending on your carrier there are equivalent WM6 phones for most WM5
form factors. I personally love the new WM6 blackjack (3G, Wifi, GPS,
etc...) as it was a pretty close and simple transition from the
blackberry and also if your wanting to have the power of windows as a
platform on your phone but the power of blackberry as messaging system
you can look into windows phones with blackberry connect. Generally
though the advantage of WM6 is usability improvements on the phone
although it is still missing a lot of basics compared to the blackberry,
like copy and paste (for non-touch screen WM) but there is a 6.1 update
coming soon which improves usability even more so. Generally with
Microsoft it seems the latest, the greatest, although Vista might be the
first exception to that rule.

one of the most irritating things about Windows Update to me. Used to
be, that when you had an update available, the icon would show in the

sometimes shows when an update is being downloaded, and then disappears.
Extremely annoying, imo.

RE: Terminal Server and Developer images

2007-12-31 Thread Steve Kelsay
Yeah, I would like to do that. That is why I am asking for other
people's experience. The developers will be using a VPN to connect, then
the management wants to use terminal services to advertise the various
development packages and code archiving software. I think a virtual
desktop or other VM solution would be better, but I have no experience
with these in a remote development environment either. We do use Vmware
extensively.

Alternatives? Give your developers a virtualised development environment
to use? They could either run VMs on their local workstations, or
connect to VMs running on a central set of servers (or some combination
thereof).

That would allow you to completely isolate your production environment
from test/dev/UAT environments, yet allow you to have exact replicas of
production in each of your other environments.

"Not supposed?" There's no "not supposed" in there, at all, for the first
$900M or so of funding. Only after that amount is exhausted is the program
restricted to OTA-only households.

And at that time, I wonder how they will determine whether a household
already has cable or satellite.

RE: Looking for a DNS provider

2007-12-31 Thread David Mazzaccaro
I never said I was going to be switching registrars.
I was just wondering why we weren't using our registrar for DNS.
And it was suggested to me that perhaps this was done so that we can switch
registrars in the event that we would have/want to.
FYI - Discoveries like this happen all the time when you inherit a network.

Why do you want talk about registrars like that? I mean, the way it comes
across in your message, you do this often? I would think you would want a
registrar that holds a higher level of confidence in such statements.

Anyway, the point is if you register all your domains at the same registrar,
then you gain ease and convenience in those areas for managing DNS. I don't
use a tier 1 registrar, but the sub of TUCOWS that I use have not given me
one reason to change in over 4 years of use. I'm all for splitting up
services but those two go so nicely together I'm wondering why you want to
do what you're doing.

Re: Terminal Server and Developer images

2007-12-31 Thread Jeffrey Showen
Greetings all and Happy New Year!

I am new to your forum and have just been reading the threads at this point
so I may have missed something here but have you considered using VMware Lab
Manager? VMware Lab Manager is optimized for use across the software
development spectrum and provides functionality like reduced lab cap-ex and
lower op-ex (as with most/all VMware virtualization), acceleration of the
development cycle, improved software quality, and flexible, secure
outsourcing for multiple remote developer desktops. We are not using it,
but I went to a mini-seminar on Lab Manager earlier this year and it would
really improve our software development process - particularly in the area
of fixing difficult to reproduce bugs. As always (it seems), the ROI on IT
enablers like this can be difficult to get management to grasp so we press
on and do the best we can without it for now. If you have allocated budget
for your development lab, this tool could be of great value in modernizing
your software development efforts and in creating an efficient
development process.

Cheers,

Jeff

Marc,

For me it's been centralized storage (Equallogic iSCSI SAN) and
virtualization (ESX 3.5). I'm five servers away from having my entire
infrastructure virtualized and this process has totally changed my
thinking and approach to IT as a whole (BC, DR, migrations, warranties,
capacity planning, day-to-day admin tasks, you name it). Lastly, it may
sound cheesy but I haven't been this excited about a specific technology
in several years, so this whole process is incredibly motivating...

Lastly, thanks for your input and assistance on this list; you're one of

First hand knowledge from friends of mine employed at MS that
specifically tell me the who/what/why of things that happen at
Microsoft.

You are right Silverlight is a defensive measure, but again that is only
because someone else has already done it right (regardless of security).
Because Flash has done it "right" they are responsible for a technology
that has become an extremely prevalent part of the average consumers
online experience. They are simply reacting to the prevelance of the
technology, forget which company label it falls under, I promise you. I
mean heck you could call it a nobody name like "Netscape." As long as
the _technology_ was a perceived threat to them, in some way, they would
be getting the monkeys to work cloning it in a heartbeat. Either way I
think Silverlight is a good thing, because I think competition is a good
thing. As long as they don't use their market dominance to shove it down
IT administrators throats, because you guys have enough crap to deal
with already.

Microsoft is indeed responsible for the explosion of the scroll wheel
but not the inventor or first to do it by any means. There were already
two different companies making scroll wheel mice before Microsoft.
Microsoft did however "invent" and patent the horizontal scroll wheel.
That does not mean that Microsoft's market reach didn't help make the
scroll wheel jjnprolific, but that again is them being good on business
and borrowing on technology.

Obviously I am sure Microsoft has invented a lot of things, a quick
patent search would show that. But it is sad when you see companies as
large as Microsoft and never having done half of what places like Xerox
PARC did from a technology innovation perspective. And thus a subtle jab
to my MS Research friend who trolls this list for ideas :-)

Either way not picking on Microsoft, they are undoubtedly one of the
most brilliant companies I will know of in my lifetime, but more for
their business cunning than technology innovation.

Which brings me to a question I love hearing answers for, what has been
a recent technology that has had the most impact on you? Could be
something that makes your IT job easier, or could be your car that
parallel parks itself.

Marc,

Do you have any inside knowledge on this product? Or is this just your
speculation?

Having talked to a few people in the WT&P group, Silverlight started off
as a defensive measure to ward off Adobe. When Macromedia owned Flash,
no one at Microsoft really cared that much about it. Now that Adobe owns
it, people felt that Microsoft couldn't stand still. Nothing to do with
waiting for someone else to make it successful and then copying it. More
to do with "we can't sit buy and have no response"

As for innovation - I'm sure Microsoft was the first vendor to put a
scroll wheel on a mouse. I think everyone has them these days.

I'm sure they've done a few other things during their time as well.

Cheers

Wait for someone else to succeed in doing it right, copy them and use
monopolistic business practices to crush them. There are a million
examples but you already know them all.

Things are changing however, Microsoft's, wait, bait, obliterate,
strategy plan is losing legs against companies like Google. Mostly
because the world consumers are being less dependent on the operating
