The TID says over 4 million files. We don't have quite that many, so I am not
sure if this applies, although it has the exact same symptoms. Perhaps it
happens under 4 million files.. A significant amount less..

That works wonderfully, however the Wireless is still open and if you do
not have it properly secured someone can attach to it wirelessly and try
to Hack in that way. I would like to see if there is a way to do this
also for our wireless users.

I have never been able to find a GPO or app that will do this.
However you can set the weight on your network adapters. Set a lower
value on the Wired NIC and a higher value on the Wireless NIC that way
the pc will always choose the Wired NIC if both have a connection.

Network Connections --> LAN Connection --> TCPIP --> Advanced -->
Uncheck Automatic Metric and put in an Interface Metric. Lower gets
more weight.

Also if you have the SP2 Firewall enabled by default than it would
mitigate this attack. Not eliminate, but I think it would suffice.

Are attacks on a wireless client card a real issue as of now? If your
workstations are not setup as ad-hoc access points is this really a
valid threat?

I am not discounting the possibility, it is just not something I have
read about yet and I try to avoid FUD passed under the guise of
security.

No. I want the Wireless disabled when the Ethernet cable has a
connection to prevent the user from being able to attach to wireless
networks when connected to the corporate LAN and attacks on the wireless
card.

Lenovo has a program called Access Connections where you can set up

non-Lenovo/IBM systems. It is available on their site as a download.

Rene thank you good sir. At least now I have a understanding of what happened,
although now I have people calling in with copies of peoples file on their
desktops of the Terminal server.Seems to be copies,
but wow what a mess. Luckily the permissions issue seem to be limited to a few
folders under a couple of subfolders and was easily resolved. Now I am just
hoping that someone's HR write-ups, or payroll spreadsheets didn't land on a
highly underpaid employees desktopHow much fun am I having going into
everyone's desktop folder and checking the owner of desktop files to confirm
they are their own.. Luckily the desktops directory is locked down so its easy
to see if files got copied that are not there's.

approach spread quickly last week after it was revealed that the company
was using its servers to automatically reserve domains temporarily after
it recorded a search on the term or name in question.

By doing so, the company effectively makes it impossible for a would-be
domain owner to register the domain with another reseller for at least
four days.

Ok, so I'm getting ready to register a domain name and setup a web site
for my niece. I search for a domain name at NSI and it comes up empty,
no one has it. Good, I then search around for a registrar with the best
price. I contact one register the domain name and am alerted that
they're still waiting for me to transfer the domain to them. Huh? I
just bought the domain, how can it be in a need of transfer

Well, it looks like I'm not the only one who is having this issue.

So, after I call NSI for some help, they tell me they'll release the
domain in 4 days, and if I want to buy it (which I already have) I can.
Here's the kicker - as I'm getting off the phone, the guy from NSI
states, hey Rick while I have you, I will give you the domain name for
free if you host it with us - we have the most secure and reliable
server in the industry. I tell him - Ken, look, do you really think I'm
going to do business with you after you just d!cked me in the a$$ - uh,
well, uhmmm, yeah... right.

Can't believe they'd do business like that.

Leading domain registrar Network Solutions is under fire for a

after it notices search activity on the names.

Um - there is this thing called a "firewall" that stops people "hacking into

Unstable wireless connection

2008-01-17 Thread Silvio L. Nisgoski
Hello,

A new machine in a client has started behaving strangely : using a domain
admin account, the wireless connection works ok. I could join the machine to
domain, install apps, etc.
But when logging with a common user, the connection drops repeatedly ( stays
on for some seconds, then fall, reconnects, fall again ) .

Just in this machine.

Is there something I´m overlooking?

Thanks.

Silvio.

I just upgraded from Pro to Enterprise an hour ago. Our cellular rep gave us
the wrong software and when I entered CAL number 31 it wouldn't take it. I
uninstalled Pro, installed Enterprise and added an upgrade key they gave me and
I was up and running without losing my previous users.

Of course, they may not sell an upgrade.

The BB enterprise works in "small business" mode if you have less than 15
licenses. The download and the first license are free and then $99 each up to
the 15 mark. You could do the 4 of them for $300.

I have a client with the top 4 execs want their BB's to do full wireless sync
(Calendar/Contacts etc) the rep tried to sell them Enterprise for Small
Business (1100.00) but I see theres Blackberry Professional which is 499.00 for
the same 5 users. They don't really need any of the advanced functions, just as
long as all the items wireless sync (unlike the personal s/w where just email
works)

This shows the comparison but doesn't mention whether it does a full sync or
not.

RE: Cisco VPN Concentrator - Reporting

2008-01-17 Thread James Winzenz
It may depend on what method you are using for your site to site and
remote connections. Is it the same type for both, or different? How
are you viewing the logs? Any way of filtering the messages that come
in (i.e. central location for collecting and reviewing logs other than
real-time)? We have different methods here right now on the
concentrator (pptp for users and IPSec for the site to site), so they
show up under different messages on the concentrator, hence easy to
separate.

1) Attachment filtering - does it quarantine the attachements? If so,
is the recipient notified. If the recipient is notified, is it
immediately, or once per day, or selectable? Is the quarantine list
modifiable/updatable? For instance, I'm quarantining Excel
spreadsheets right now, 'cause of the unpatched vulnerability, but
once it's got a signature I'll want to stop that.

2) Disclaimers - are they configurable as to whether it's a header or footer?

Looks like there is no separate hotfix for XP - we're supposed to apply the

Maybe http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831374/ and
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831374/

Both same issue, 831374 for XP and Windows 2003 and 831375 for Windows 2000

First they say this

We recommend that you immediately apply the appropriate service pack or
hotfix on any computer that is currently vulnerable to the loss of security
descriptors.

We recommend that you inventory servers and workstations in your
organization and then install preventive software on any computers that are
at risk. We recommend that you apply any preventive fix to new computers
before you deploy the new computers for test or production use. We recommend
that you inform server administrators, helpdesk administrators, and support
professionals that they should install preventive fixes before the following
operations are executed:

•

chkdsk /F

•

chkdsk /R

•

Autochk

And then follow up with

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is
intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article.
Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific
problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are
not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the
next service pack that contains this hotfix.

Especially read both underlined parts. Yeah right, count the number of
files, if you get near the limit and plan on using chkdsk then appy the
hotfix…. ;-)

Doesn’t really help after the fact though.

How I love chkdsk /f, while drive activity does seem normal, it apparently
found invalid security descriptors on files and instead of telling me where
they removed them from, it just randomly removed security and left it BLANK
or Administrator only full control.

Some are good, and some are bad. Everything from our My Doc redirection
folders to public drives, to GP install DFS paths all the permissions are
either right or wrong with no idea of what?

And since some are good and some are not, restoring from backup would not be
the greatest idea, except that perhaps I can restore with the do not restore
if new target exists using BUE. Not sure if it would make a bad problem
worse or save the day.

Event log doesn’t give you much. It looks like this will be fun. I am
applying user folders with their default permissions and applying to all
files and subfolders to get their files right, but everything else is just
going to be reactive fixing.

I would love to know what caused this corruption… Just security descriptor
errors according to the event log, no other errors.

I have a 2003 Sp2 server running a HW Raid 1 and a HW Raid 5, all SAS drives
same controller. Dell 2950.

Tens of thousands of files, thousands of directories.

Whenever something hard hits the arrays like a VSS snapshot, Defrag, the
drives completely become inaccessible to the host or remotes. Drives are
lit up near solid, but there are no signs from the raid card of a drive
failure, raid issue. Leave the system along long enough and it comes back
from death.

Any ideas where I could start. Letting it run a defrag tonight.

price I would rather buy Everest. It has a friendlier interface. Bother can

I used to be the person who was responsible for the systems and would have been
able to give you a definitive answer on that. Since this part of the system
administration is outsourced to a vendor, I'll have to check w/the tech who is
working on it. I do know that the newest NIC card driver was installed. Thanks
for the suggestion.

Subject: Help - Disk Write Problem

Please help! We have been having this problem for a week and a half and we have
not found a resolution. Thanks.

I've got a Dell PowerEdge 2850 which has three disks of its own, and 7-200GB
drives assigned from a SUN SAN. It is a W2K3/SP1 server. This server is direct
connected to a switch. All disks, SANS and Server disks are formated NTFS. We
have created shares as required by our imaging system on the SAN volumes. The
imaging system and all it's associated utilities have had no problem writing to
these disks in the last two years. Last week, when attempting to create new
volumes (these are just folders on the file system) it took several hours for
it to time out. A folder was created, the .ini file was created inside of it,
and one partial control file. Normally, the .ini file is created, 5-500MB
control files are created, and one control file less that 50MB is created in
under 5 mins. I was able to reproduce the problem condition three times from
three different workstations one of which was on the same subnet as the server.
As a test, I attempted to copy a 8.4
MB file to that server from my desktop. It took 5 minutes to copy the file.
When I copied the file back to my desktop, it took less than 10secs. Another
test I tried was copying the same file to a different server not connected to
the SAN, but does pass through a hub before connecting to the switch. The same
file copied from my desktop to the new server, was almost instantaneous. We
also know that the problem exists whether writing to the servers disks or to
the SAN disks. Things we've checked...

1. We configured a different switch port for the same subnet and plugged a
working production server into it. It worked fine. We plugged the problem
server into the new switch port and the problem still persits.
2. We have changed out the cables w/brand new out of the bag cables.
3. The server has two onboard NICS. We switched NIC cards, but the problem
still persits.
4. The server was also plugged into a hub. We removed the hub and direct
connected the server into the switch.
5. We verified that the speed/duplex was set to 100Mps/Full on the NIC and on
the switch port.
6. The motherboard has been replaced in case the NICs were bad.

Is there a simple way to determine if a multi-CPU system has dual core or
is hyperthreaded? We have some servers that we need to disable
hyperthreading on but would like to know without rebooting them if
hyperthreading is enabled, or if it just happens to be a dual core CPU?.

What firewall do you use.

Anyone else that has experience with other 3rd party apps like airdefence

That was a big consideration here, actually delayed our wireless
implementation untill infosec was absolutely happy with it. We did it
with a stateful desktop firewall that will only allow one active
connection at at a time and won't allow any bridging of connections.
Covers any NIC, wireless, aircards, modems etc. I think some of the HIPS
products would also provide that functionality.

Lenovo has a program called Access Connections where you can set up

non-Lenovo/IBM systems. It is available on their site as a download.

You can set a GPO up to not allow the NIC's to bridge networks. But
that probably wouldn't stop a virus/hacker from hitting the wireless

RE: Disable Wirless if Ethernet has a connection

2008-01-17 Thread Fogarty, Richard R Mr ARMY GUEST USA USASOC
Exactly what I was getting at. If the user is in a locked down state,
probably not the biggest problem. However, if a user has admin rights - and
worse yet, admin rights on the network itself, it could potentially be a big
problem.

It depends on how tightly the machine is locked down in general. If the end
user has any capacity to set up their machine to route packets from one NIC
to the other, then, yes, it's a problem.

Are attacks on a wireless client card a real issue as of now? If your
workstations are not setup as ad-hoc access points is this really a valid
threat?

I am not discounting the possibility, it is just not something I have read
about yet and I try to avoid FUD passed under the guise of security.

No. I want the Wireless disabled when the Ethernet cable has a connection to
prevent the user from being able to attach to wireless networks when
connected to the corporate LAN and attacks on the wireless card.

Lenovo has a program called Access Connections where you can set up
profiles to do this. However I don't know if you can use on
non-Lenovo/IBM systems. It is available on their site as a download.

That works wonderfully, however the Wireless is still open and if you do
not have it properly secured someone can attach to it wirelessly and try
to Hack in that way. I would like to see if there is a way to do this

OK, thanks all. The consensus is to rebuild it on the freed server and
forget about Ghost. That was what I was going to do anyway until a
contractor suggested Ghosting.
I thought I had one more question but the Mastering Windows Server 2003
book answered it. I know this server plays some unique FSMO roles as it
was the first DC in the domain. So when I demote it, AD will find
another DC to transfer those roles to.

I manage a Barracuda spam appliance now and I'm quite pleased with it,
so it will be great to see another product in this segment and evaluate
it when our subscription service ends.

One of the facets I like most about Barracuda Networks are their online
user forums. While the forums aren't strictly monitored by official tech
support, the knowledge of other users is invaluable and I've that online
community to be very open to sharing.

I hope that Sunbelt offers and supports a similar online user community
with the Ninja Blade.

RE: SMS 2003 R2 Deployment Plan

2008-01-17 Thread Jim Majorowicz
This pretty much hits the nail on the head. Over in the SBS list, we have a
mantra that we ask new SBSers to learn:

"Install 3 times before you begin. Install once for a test, install twice
for yourself, install three times for production."

By this we mean that you should do at *LEAST* two test configurations before
installing for a live envornment. This way you have an understanding of
what the wizards want and why. ESPECIALLY if you're going to deploy ISA.

Subject: RE: SMS 2003 R2 Deployment Plan

You don't install components separately. It's a 3 disk install for SBS
Std, Premium adds ISA and SQL (2 Disks), then R2 a separate disk
upgrades all your components with the latest on that disk, already old
with the exception of the R2 components to be installed and updated by
Sp2.

You cannot install SBS version and upgrade your windows with any service
packs or updates before completing the SBS install, it will fail, IIS
will not configure properly for internal website, etc. You can disable
the SP functionality after install, but you have to install it in order
for SBS to install properly.

1. Install Disk 1, start SBS install
2. Complete SBS install by entering all information and disks when
prompted
3. Perform updates, SP2, IE7, etc..
4. Perform R2 install. (Doesn't do much in SBS, just some addons)
5. Install Optional components ISA and SQL 2005
6. Install ISA Updates (Will need for it to work with SP2)
7. Install SQL 2005 SP's
8. Install WSUS (version 2) managed by SBS (version 3) is not but you
can install it and manage it separately.
9. Configure all of your user accts, computers accts, USING THE
WIZARDS.. DO NOT Manage like a regular AD network. MUST DO THROUGH THE
WIZARDS>> FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GOOD AND RIGHT AND HOLY...USE THE
WIZARDS.
10. Spend the remainder of your days in retirement. It will take you
that long to get it all done..

P.S. If you have Office 2007 or plan to install it. Make sure you
install the 2007 and Vista addons download from MS. Make sure you also
when setting up computers you tell it not to install Outlook 2003, just
the configuration files for autoconfiguring Outlook 2007.

RE: 2003 DC system partition too small

2008-01-17 Thread Walt Hundleby
OK, thanks all. The consensus is to rebuild it on the freed server and forget
about Ghost. That was what I was going to do anyway until a contractor
suggested Ghosting.
I thought I had one more question but the Mastering Windows Server 2003 book
answered it. I know this server plays some unique FSMO roles as it was the
first DC in the domain. So when I demote it, AD will find another DC to
transfer those roles to.

Are attacks on a wireless client card a real issue as of now? If your
workstations are not setup as ad-hoc access points is this really a valid
threat?

I am not discounting the possibility, it is just not something I have read

No. I want the Wireless disabled when the Ethernet cable has a connection to

Lenovo has a program called Access Connections where you can set up

non-Lenovo/IBM systems. It is available on their site as a download.

Make sure you have good backups and test them. I have talked with a few people
in our group that have done this. Out of three migrations, one had minor issues
that were annoying to fix. One had moderate problems where some things didn't
get changed completely. And then the last was a major problem that involved
calling Microsoft to get everything working. The last one would have been
faster if they did everything from scratch.

Sorry I don't have more info.

Having trouble with a couple of simple machine side startup scripts that are
not working. I usually have no problem with these but they are starting to
annoy me.

Two simple machine GPO's to run bat files. Gpresult shows them there. The
registry shows them there yet they are not accomplishing their intended goal.
One installs Flash 9 and the other installs Java 6. Hitting the bat file
manually and they run error free.

Not sure where else to look to trouble shoot this, nothing in the event logs.

Please help! We have been having this problem for a week and a half and we
have not found a resolution. Thanks.

I've got a Dell PowerEdge 2850 which has three disks of its own, and
7-200GB drives assigned from a SUN SAN. It is a W2K3/SP1 server. This
server is direct connected to a switch. All disks, SANS and Server disks
are formated NTFS. We have created shares as required by our imaging
system on the SAN volumes. The imaging system and all it's associated
utilities have had no problem writing to these disks in the last two
years. Last week, when attempting to create new volumes (these are just
folders on the file system) it took several hours for it to time out. A
folder was created, the .ini file was created inside of it, and one
partial control file. Normally, the .ini file is created, 5-500MB control
files are created, and one control file less that 50MB is created in under
5 mins. I was able to reproduce the problem condition three times from
three different workstations one of which was on the same subnet as the
server. As a test, I attempted to copy a 8.4 MB file to that server from
my desktop. It took 5 minutes to copy the file. When I copied the file
back to my desktop, it took less than 10secs. Another test I tried was
copying the same file to a different server not connected to the SAN, but
does pass through a hub before connecting to the switch. The same file
copied from my desktop to the new server, was almost instantaneous. We
also know that the problem exists whether writing to the servers disks or
to the SAN disks. Things we've checked...

1. We configured a different switch port for the same subnet and plugged a
working production server into it. It worked fine. We plugged the problem
server into the new switch port and the problem still persits.
2. We have changed out the cables w/brand new out of the bag cables.
3. The server has two onboard NICS. We switched NIC cards, but the problem
still persits.
4. The server was also plugged into a hub. We removed the hub and direct
connected the server into the switch.
5. We verified that the speed/duplex was set to 100Mps/Full on the NIC and
on the switch port.
6. The motherboard has been replaced in case the NICs were bad.

One of the facets I like most about Barracuda Networks are their

RE: Help - Disk Write Problem

Do you have all the PE 2850 firmware and drivers updated to the latest
revisions from Dell's site?

As a test, I attempted to copy a 8.4 MB file to that server from my desktop. It
took 5 minutes to copy the file. When I copied the file back to my desktop, it
took less than 10secs. Another test I tried was copying the same file to a
different server not connected to the SAN, but does pass through a hub before
connecting to the switch. The same file copied from my desktop to the new
server, was almost instantaneous. We also know that the problem exists whether
writing to the servers disks or to the SAN disks.

BB Professional Software

2008-01-17 Thread Benjamin Zachary

I have a client with the top 4 execs want their BB's to do full wireless
sync (Calendar/Contacts etc) the rep tried to sell them Enterprise for Small
Business (1100.00) but I see theres Blackberry Professional which is 499.00
for the same 5 users. They don't really need any of the advanced functions,
just as long as all the items wireless sync (unlike the personal s/w where
just email works)

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/professional/#tab_tab_compare

This shows the comparison but doesn't mention whether it does a full sync or
not.

Thanks to those in the know :-)

The subject essentially said it all. We built a very high quality appliance,

RE: TRANSITION Pack for SBS2k3 Sp1

2008-01-17 Thread Art DeKneef
I have a customer that is getting close to doing this so I asked at our SBS
group.

Make sure you have good backups and test them. I have talked with a few
people in our group that have done this. Out of three migrations, one had
minor issues that were annoying to fix. One had moderate problems where some
things didn't get changed completely. And then the last was a major problem
that involved calling Microsoft to get everything working. The last one
would have been faster if they did everything from scratch.

Sorry I don't have more info.

Are attacks on a wireless client card a real issue as of now? If your

I am not discounting the possibility, it is just not something I have read

Lenovo has a program called Access Connections where you can set up
profiles to do this. However I don't know if you can use on
non-Lenovo/IBM systems. It is available on their site as a download.

You could push a script through GPO to disable the wireless adapter when users
log to the domain, and then teach the users how to enable again the wireless

Hardware profiles will not work either because you need to reboot in order to
switch. We are looking for something that will enable to wireless adapter when
the ethernet does not have a connection without the user having to reboot.

Hardware profiles might do what you want with minor user intervention. In
XP, it's in control panel, system, Hardware tab, click on the Hardware profiles
button. Just an FYI, from what I can google right now (this is the first I've
looked into it), this appears to be going away with Vista. What I'm reading
says it's no longer supported (for hardware), but it appears to be available in
the services area.

What we usually do for systems where this is important is to create a "Wired"
and "Wireless" profile. In the "Wired" profile, you disable the Wireless NIC
via device manager and in the "Wireless" profile, you disable the Wired NIC.
Set the more commonly used configuration as the default and the user has to
reboot the box to bring the other one online.

the ethernet does not have a connection without the user having to reboot.

Hardware profiles might do what you want with minor user intervention. In XP,
it's in control panel, system, Hardware tab, click on the Hardware profiles

Why not just select all the users in the OU and edit their properties?
When I do this, the logon hours is a checkbox in the account tab, where

However you can set the weight on your network adapters. Set a lower

the pc will always choose the Wired NIC if both have a connection.

Network Connections --> LAN Connection --> TCPIP --> Advanced -->
Uncheck Automatic Metric and put in an Interface Metric. Lower gets

2008-01-17 Thread Terry Dickson

Sorry don't understand. Sort you? What is it you are trying to get
from MS or Dell?

Right,

Ive spoken to MS licensing who say that yes I can use Entourage with SBS
instead of outlook under the same license (ie swap the outlook licenses
for entourage). They say speak to Dell when i buy the server and they
can sort me. Dell tell me that they cant sort me and its something that
MS have to give me. MS say Dell are wrong and that the seller of the
server is responsible.

Who's right ?

lol - biggest mistake people make with SBS :-) SBS is NOT Windows
Server 2003 - it may be based on it, but it is it's own entity.

Also, there is a very nice wizard that will automatically add your
computers to the SBS domain - use it too! Just point IE to your SBS
server and it should be one of the choices.

Can you open her mailbox from another machine and see if it works? Much
quicker than trying to track down a hypothetical solution?

Lo chaps,

Which diagnostic logging element should I turn on if i want to see
whether incoming emails to an SBS box are being cut short in
mid-transfer? I have a user who complains excessively about attachments
being corrupted (docs and zips not opening, jpgs showing half a photo
etc).

I'm pretty sure it's her machine, but i need to be sure.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I see no sign of store corruption, and it's the
odd email, not all emails. However, she gets an email from a sender who
CC'd in her collegues and her colleagues are fine, but hers will be
corrupted. Try again, and it wont be.
