There was some talk on here in the last week or two about upgrading drives in a raid array on a dell server. One procedure was to pull one drive, replace it with a bigger one, let the array rebuild. Image Software - what's new this year?
It has been a while since I saw anything on imaging software. I am moving from an old version of Ghost (7) and was wondering what the latest greatest tool is for creating and burning images to workstations? We are getting in machines that have NICS do not support DOS, so booting to dos as the old GHOST required then connecting to a server to burn an image is not longer an option. Alternatively, I would like to burn a boot DVD with the image on board, but that is not as easy as it sounds. RE: Image Software - what's new this year?
Does Acronis actually make image files, or is it similar to a backup system? It looks like it is licensed on a per machine basis. That would make it pretty expensive for an image tool where Ghost is just a single license for the disk we are using. Is that the case? Here's another vote for Acrons' True Image Server products with their Universal Restore Option (URO) add-on. Until we switched to imaging from using BackupExec, our disaster recovery drills were a nightmare, what with restoring to different hardware at our provider's site. Using Acronis combined with virtualizing most of our servers on VMware's ESX or VMware Server products has made it a relative breeze. - Philip This communication, including attachments, is for the exclusive use of addressee and may contain proprietary, confidential and/or privileged information. RE: Drive upgrade
Well it worked like a champ on my HP... and I believe (like said below) that it should work on any controller. Make sure you have a backup on hand! FYI - to give you an idea of time... I replaced (4) 72GB U320 15k drives w/ (4) 300GB U320 15k drives. Each drive took 30 minutes to rebuild. This was on a controller w/ 128BBWC and set to high priority for rebuild. Also done off-hours (no load on the server) I have not expanded the array to utilize the extra space yet though. YMMV From: Steve Moffat [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of NTSysAdmin Sent: Friday, March 14, 2008 8:45 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: RE: Drive upgrade Works with any raid controller. From: Glen Johnson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 14, 2008 9:16 AM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Drive upgrade There was some talk on here in the last week or two about upgrading drives in a raid array on a dell server. One procedure was to pull one drive, replace it with a bigger one, let the array rebuild. Continue this process until all drives are replaced, then use diskport to expand the volume. Does anyone know if this process will work on ad Dell 745 nas with the CERC SATA controller? Thanks. It looks like it is licensed on a per machine basis. That would make it pretty expensive for an image tool where Ghost is just a single license for the disk we are using. Is that the case? Actually, you may want to check your Ghost license...I'm pretty sure it is licensed per machine as well. We had to buy 125 licenses when we purchased Ghost Corp 7.5 5 years ago. And the personal version is for sure licensed per machine. From Symantec: http://www.symantec.com/business/products/licensing.jsp?pcid=2247pvid=865_1 Licensing Information Symantec Ghost Solution Suite is licensed on a per machine basis (regardless of how many CPU's a machine contains). For example, if you have 200 desktops/laptops you want to manage with Ghost Solution Suite, you would need to purchase 200 licenses of Ghost Solution Suite. Included with your Ghost licenses, is a Ghost Centralized Management Console. The Ghost Console allows for centralized management of all machines in your organization that are licensed to use Ghost. - Andy O. ~ Upgrade to Next Generation Antispam/Antivirus with Ninja!~ ~ http://www.sunbelt-software.com/SunbeltMessagingNinja.cfm ~

RE: Image Software - what's new this year?
Yes, Acronis is licensed per server, but we've found it to be a good investment. We protect over 40 servers with it here, plus I have their Workstation product on my computers at home. Their Universal Restore Option has made disaster recovery restores a snap. The product produces a TIB file, their own image format. To do a bare metal restore, you create a bootable CD ahead of time and set it aside; we probably have a half dozen in our DR emergency box. This is their own Linux distro, with which we've only ever once had driver issues. Our NICs and disk/RAID controllers are very mainstream though - HP/Compaq and Dell. One of the features we like is that we can mount these TIB files as R/O or R/W drives and pick files off them without having to do a full bare-metal restore. We also use it instead of VMware's P2V product for moving a system from physical to virtual. The now have a new product specifically intending for the P2V process, but we haven't tried that out yet. We've found support to be very good when we've asked for it. That's all been done out of Russia, but their English was very good, and the techs were always willing to stay with an issue until it was resolved. The time we needed a newer driver than was in their current build, it only took them a couple of hours to post what I needed. If you want to test, I believe they have a 30-day trial that's full featured. Once the trial period is over, you cannot create more images, but you can still restore from images created during the trial period. - Philip This communication, including attachments, is for the exclusive use of addressee and may contain proprietary, confidential and/or privileged information. I've not had any experience using it, but It sure does look like a good product: The KBOX Systems Deployment Appliance www.kace.com From what I have read, it will PXE boot the client and run a linux based imaging software. The appliance holds the images on an internal raided drive... and they claim that they can redeploy windows images on different target hardware than the source. Also, these guys bought appdeploy.com. I have no problems with the DOS-based ghost on modern computers. The most recent I've tried is a Lenovo model 8811, which are Core 2-based machines. The key is current versions of Ghost have a generic NIC driver that works with *any* PXE-enabled NIC - it's called the universal packet driver. BTW this is using Ghost 12. One of our guys is vacationing in Florida next week at The Villages. He's staying at his dad's house, who's not there now. His dad has no active cable connection there (or phone.) His son has a Mac notebook, his wife has a PC notebook. What I'm wondering about is, what's the best way for them to get Internet access through their notebooks? They have Verizon cell phone service. I'm thinking there must be something like an EV-DO USB key or something that they could use? I'm out of date! :) Thanks, Evan ___ Evan A. RE: Dumb wireless question
According to which phone they have, you can tether them via USB cable (or possibly bluetooth) and use either 1X or EVDO that way. I've done it with the last couple of phones I have had for emergencys or when I didn't have one of my my cell cards with me. My experience with Verizon has been that they can provision a data plan for an existing phone pretty darn fast. We also get the cell cards overnight and have them provisioned and working the next day. RE: Windows 7
The original Windows NT was a from scratch OS, and has nothing to do with the DOS/Win3x or Win9x codebase. NT made its debut as 3.1 only to show version consistency with DOS/Windows 3x at the time. Windows 95/98/SE/ME were all v4 and subsequent point releases, whose version number was based from the original v1 through Windows 3x which ran atop DOS. NT started at 3.1, then 3.5 and 3.51, and finally NT 4. After that it was no longer outwardly called NT. 2000 is v5, XP is x5.1 and 2003 is 5.2, with the current Vista being v6. When you delete a file that resides in a shared folder on a server (i.e. working on a document in Word on your desktop, and said document lives on a share) and you happen to delete said document, it doesn't go anywhere does it? RE: Blackberry or Outlook automatically forwarding messages
As for the OOO - I had a similar situation here. My user would email a recipient. Unbeknownst to the recipient, her boyfriend had setup an auto-forward rule to forward all her incoming email to him at his work... And he was deleting many of our emails (w/o reading them) and thus generating your message was deleted without being read receipts back to us. Nice, eh?
