You could use logmein.com products to temporary setup a session, Have
them hook-up a serial cable to gain access to the device via console
access and enable the protocols.

Unfortunately you can't as it is integrated to the mainboard. You will need to

RE: SharePoint Web Server farms

2008-12-09 Thread David Lum
+1, it's easy to *set it up*. The trick is to understand how you want to deploy
it to the organization. Do you want multiple web apps, or just one? Multiple
site collections, or just one collection with a bunch of team sites underneath?
When it comes to restoring data you need to keep in mind how you design your
SharePoint infrastructure has an effect on this as well as how granular you can
delegate permissions. If you have a small company then it's not a problem, one
site will likely cover your needs, but if you have 500+ users, you might need
more than one. *Maybe*.

Think of SharePoint as you would Active Directory - you can get it going
without any planning, but it will work better for you if you have it mapped out
ahead of time.

I *highly* recommend a class on SharePoint before just throwing it out there.
For me, SharePoint took more than just reading on the web to get my hands
around some of the concepts.

RE: Personal SSL Cert disappearing

2008-12-09 Thread Groups
It's a personal cert that's installed via the banks website.

I have even exported it, then imported it.

It shows as imported fine, but when I open IE, it does not show up under
personal certs.

The bank claims that it belongs under personal certs.

I have also tried to install it in other locations such as trusted
publishers, and while it saves there, it will not show up when the bank
looks for it.

This is a Widows XP Pro machine, SP2, IE7 on 2003 AD.

Is the cert a client authentication cert? Or a server authentication cert?
If the latter, then it shouldn't be installed in "Personal Certs" Instead,
the CA's cert (that issued the server auth cert) should be installed in
Trusted Root CAs.

If it's a client authN cert, use MMC (add the Certificates snapin) - does
the cert disappear by itself?

Hi all,

Got a very odd issue.

We have a domain user who is trying to log onto a bank website.

The bank requires an SSL cert to be installed.

The cert installs and shows as installed under personals certs, but, once IE
is closed and reopened, it's gone.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Declining an already approved WSUS update

2008-12-09 Thread Michael . Leone
I made a bonehead mistake, and approved the installation of .NET Framework
3.0 (I wanted to just approve the updates to it, so that any system that
had it was updated, but didn't want to just generally install it).
Luckily, none of my WSUS clients auto-install., so it didn't get pushed
out to the clients. But I did see that WSUS thought a substantial number
of clients needed it, and now I see that update on the clients, as an
update waiting to be downloaded..

Now I've gone back into the list of approved updates, and declined that
specific item. I'm hoping that any of the systems that had been listed as
"needing installation" from when it was approved, will now just remove
that item from the list of needed updates, the next time the clients check
into the WSUS server? For example, I still see it in the list of updates
waiting to be downloaded on the WSUS server itself, even after declining
the update and rebooting.

What else do I need to do, to ensure that the v3 Framework is not
installed on the clients?

Thanks

I wonder if he has already purchased his get out of free pass yet. Seems
from the new article he was being a bit flip about the whole thing. One
would think if he was that flip he had already gotten something worked out

Here's a tip: Get video! Take just 60 seconds of random video every month or

I'd wager all parents on this list would love to have short little clips from

RE: Personal SSL Cert disappearing

2008-12-09 Thread Troy Meyer
Does it ever work to access the bank? Has this machine or user ever been
renamed?

We have had issues on permissions to the physical folder that holds the
personal certificate store on select XP machines, most of the time caused by
computer/user name change flubbubs.

This happened very seldom with some of our dealers, but was always fixed by
booting into safe mode and removing/re-adding user permissions to the folder at
(and propagating all changes to child objects)

 C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto

Before I did that though, I would try that user logged into a different machine
to see if that gives you any love.

It's a personal cert that's installed via the banks website.

I have even exported it, then imported it.

It shows as imported fine, but when I open IE, it does not show up under
personal certs.

The bank claims that it belongs under personal certs.

I have also tried to install it in other locations such as trusted publishers,
and while it saves there, it will not show up when the bank looks for it.

RE: Personal SSL Cert disappearing

2008-12-09 Thread Ken Schaefer
Hi,

I'm not asking whether it's a personal cert or not. I'm asking whether this
cert is being used for client authentication or server authentication, as the
certificate store (machine -vs- user as well as the location) are different.

If it's a client authentication certificate, then the remote webserver presents
a list of trusted CAs during the SSL handshake. IE will only show certs that
are properly chained, and issued by CAs in that list in the "select a
certificate" dialogue presented to the user. I would check that the issuing CA
is in one of the trusted CA stores for the user, and that the client
authentication certificate is in the personal store (which you seem to have
done). Then you will need to make sure that the CA is listed in the list
returned by the remote webserver.

Cheers

Re: SharePoint Web Server farms

2008-12-09 Thread Clayton Doige
that's fair comment for sure, and thanks for that. We have 40 users, with a
bunch of team sites in one collection. I thought of using a farm as opposed
to setting up some sort of formal DR Process (currently have a batch file
using stsadm to take back ups, and could use the same for a restore to a
target dr server, and do the necessary from there).

thanks again

That is what I did, on the WSUS server. And the V3 Framework did not then
appear on the list of waiting updates.

Since I don't have an easy way to run the "detectnow" on all the other
clients automatically, I will just wait for them to check in and update
themselves normally.

Here's a tip: Get video! Take just 60 seconds of random video every month or
two. Doesn't matter what they're doing - eating, playing, sleeping.. just
shoot 60 seconds. Five years (and more) down the road you'll look at the
videos and go "wow".

I'd wager all parents on this list would love to have short little clips

2008-12-09 Thread Doige, Clayton
I am trying to connect a Citrix Xen 4.1 server to an HP NAS box running
MS NFS 1.0 and can't get Citrix to connect. I am pretty confident it is
an authentication issue, and am reading the help section regarding
setting up user name mappings, but am scratching my head a little. I
don't speak much Unix, well, actually, none.

The settings reference an NIS Domain, and this is where I think I am
coming unstuck, because I have no idea how to determine this on the Xen
Server. I have looked at the host parameters to see if this is in there
anywhere, and I have also tried just sticking the name and ip in there
and it won't connect.

So on the odd chance anyone knows anything about this and where I might
be going wrong any help would be greatly appreciated J

Print to html?

2008-12-09 Thread Bill Monicher
I have some documents that I would like to convert to html.
They are currently in Excel, but if I export them as html, the headers
and footers disappear -- among other changes.
Also, rather then appear as a single scrollable document, there is an
imitation of the worksheet tabs at the bottom.
All very clever.

There are "print to pdf" utilities, is there a "print to html"
available anywhere?
Is there a way to convert a pdf to html?

Thanks,

Re: Print to html?

Umm, yes, there is quite a list, isn't there.
I was rather hoping that someone might have actually *used* one or
more of them, so that I might have something to choose between them.
>From your reply I'm guessing that you had assumed I had not tried the
google route, and I'm further guesing that you know about as much of
these things as I.

Have you actually used this?
Is it worth the 100 or so bucks?

2008-12-09 Thread Sean Rector
What I do in this situation (I'm assuming you only want the first sheet)
is to copy/paste the part of the sheet I want as HTML into Word, then
save as HTML. Works great for our company extension list.

I am gearing up to deploy SharePoint Server 2007. The main goal is to
help eliminate "Outlook as a file transport", but eliminate the 100's of
file shares we have. But I also know there is much more to the product.

I would appreciate replies from those that have deployed SharePoint or
have SharePoint experience on what your deployment experience was and
what you would or wouldn't do again.

Also, anyone have SharePoint running in a VM?

As I type this, I am loading up a test server to experience the install
process and do some testing.

Thanks for any info.

Hello:

I'm looking at Dell Equallogic arrays PS5000 series. The look pretty
good for what we need here, but price is steep for my agency (starting
at around $45k just for the disks and enclosure). Anyone have any
alternative vendors to suggest? SAN will be used for databases,
logging, maybe some file and print data.

I wouldn't think that SharePoint in a VM is a real problem, per se - as
always, I recommend database servers be in hardware, but that's my personal
prejudice.

You should always size a machine to meet the needs of your user community.
If you don't know what those needs are, buy big and ramp up from there. J

2008-12-09 Thread Sherry Abercrombie
I have Sharepoint and it's SQL server both in VMWare. Have had it on VMWare
for years, no issues. We do have the SQL server on a different VM guest
machine (it's used for more than just the Sharepoint DB). Would I do it
again, sure, it's been very stable.

Would recommend a good book or hands on class. I went to a hands on 3 day
admin class a couple of years after implementing Sharepoint and it was very
useful. I would not recommend allowing users the ability to create sites
and most users need nothing more than Web-Developer permission level.

Microsoft has good documentation for MOSS at:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303422.aspx

The Pocket Administrator's book provides most of the day-to-day answers.

We have had WSS running for almost 2 years and are working on the
migration to MOSS. Development MOSS web and app servers are already
running on Server 2008.

SQL will stay on a physical machine, but there is not any reason to put
the app and web on VMs.

RE: SharePoint Server

2008-12-09 Thread Troy Meyer
Check out some of the resources at wssdemo.com. One thing we did that seems to
have been nice is install the Microsoft online MOSS end-user training. This is
a nice package from Microsoft that runs as its own site collection (we gave it
a separate internal domain name) and you can send users there and have them
see\participate in different types of interactive training within SharePoint.
We barely scrape the surface of its possibilities, and its an easy sell (free)

Good luck on the deployment, as previously stated by David, planning now will
make a world of difference later.

We have a small, single story office with approx 25 people. We have a
dedicated T1, which is connected to our Firewall, then switch. I am
seeking a wireless solution that does not connect between our firewall
and T1. In short, I am looking for a solution that connects behind the
switch. All Wireless routers that I know of connect between the firewall
and switch.

You could also use any cable/dsl wireless router and just don't use the wan
port. Plug the one of the lan ports into your switch for dhcp/dns and the
clients can connect wirelessly.

The WRT54GL is cheaper than the WAP54G. Disable DHCP and you basically have
an AP with three extra switch ports. Install DD-WRT and you can make the WAN
port into an extra switch port as well as a whole slew of other
possibilities.

VLAN concepts and applications

2008-12-09 Thread Ben Scott
Someone asked me off-list for an explanation of some VLAN stuff.
They agreed to let me post my response to the list, for discussion,
review, etc. If anyone has corrections/additions/etc., please
contribute.

PROTOCOL CONCEPTS

We have regular "untagged" Ethernet frames. ("Frame" is the
data-link (layer 2) term for what some protocols calls a "packet" or
"datagram".) These are the same Ethernet frames from before VLANs
were invented.

Then we have "tagged" frames. These take a regular Ethernet frame
and add a marker -- the "tag". The tag itself contains the VLAN
number (along with a priority code). Thus, a tagged frame is
associated with a particular VLAN number.

Inside the frame, the tag is basically just a reserved Ethernet
frame type, followed by the tag information, followed by the rest of
the original frame (complete with its original frame type). So to
network nodes which are *not* VLAN aware, a tagged frame looks just
like a regular Ethernet frame, but with an "unknown" frame type.

For computers, a VLAN-aware network stack will usually turn each
VLAN into a separate network interface, as if each VLAN was a
different network card with a different cable. The "stock" network
stack included with Win 2000/XP does *not* include VLAN capability, so
they can only handle untagged frames. Tagged frames will generally be
silently ignored. Third-party software (often included with high-end
network cards) can add VLAN capability. I'm not sure about
2003/Vista/2008.

Switches which are not VLAN-aware, along with any repeaters, will
treat tagged frames exactly like they do any other frame.

SWITCH CONCEPTS

Switches which are VLAN-aware generally let you control which ports
are associated with which VLAN(s). The terminology, commands, etc.,
will vary with manufacturer. I'm most familiar with the HP ProCruve
managed witches, so I'll speak mostly to that. The concepts should
carry over to other manufacturers. Hopefully others can chime in with
specifics.

With HP, you can tell the switch that each VLAN is tagged, untagged,
or not available for each port. Internally, frames are *always*
associated a VLAN number. The configuration just tells the switch
which VLANs go with which ports, and which VLAN number to use for
untagged frames.

When the switch receives an untagged frame, it needs to know what
VLAN to associate it with. If the port has an untagged VLAN
associated it, the fame will go to that VLAN. If there is no untagged
VLAN associated with the port, the frame is dropped. This is why a
port can have (at most) one untagged VLAN associated with it -- how
could the switch know which one to use otherwise?

When the switch receives a tagged frame, it simply checks to see if
that VLAN is associated with the port. If so, it accepts it; if not,
it drops it. This is basically just an access control mechanism.

When the switch has a frame to *transmit*, it only considers ports
which are associated with the frame's VLAN. If a port is configured
as tagged for the frame's VLAN, it transmits the frame with the VLAN
tag. If a port is configured as untagged for the VLAN, the frame is
transmitted on that port without a VLAN tag.

APPLICATIONS

Okay, enough conceptual stuff, how do we use it?

At %DAYJOB%, we've got VLANs as follows:

1 – Reserved
2 – Main company private network
3 – Guest network
4 – ISP uplink
5 – IP telephony

We don't use VLAN 1 because that's the default on most things, and
to avoid confusion we avoid it.

VLAN 2 is where most traffic is. Most ports are configured as
untagged for VLAN 2. The computers, printers, etc., plugged into
those ports aren't even aware they are on a VLAN. All the employee
workstations are like this, as are most servers. The syntax to
configure this is easy. For example, if I want port 1 to be untagged
for VLAN 2 like this:

vlan 2 untagged 1

VLAN 3 is for guests (visitors). For obvious reasons, we don't let
them plug in to our main network. They get a separate IP subnet, a
separate DHCP server, and bypass much of our network filtering. This
is also where our wireless access points connect (employees use
VPN-over-wireless). Again, all untagged, and connected nodes are not
aware of the VLAN.

VLAN 4 exists because we've got a cable Internet feed we use for
employee web browsing. Circumstances meant the cable modem had to go
in a different building from the main server/network room. (We have
another feed for important stuff; that terminates in the server room.)
So the cable modem plugs into a particular switch port, which uses
VLAN 4 to carry it to our firewall in a different building. Again,
untagged, unaware.

VLAN 5 is for premises voice-over-IP, a project which I'm still in
the middle of. My plan is to let the phones be VLAN-aware and tagged
everywhere, so they operate "outside" the regular network. In theory,
it should be possible to have a phone tagged on VLAN 5 and a computer
untagged on VLA

Re: SAN question

2008-12-09 Thread Durf
So far I have to agree on the MD3000i units. They are no-frills, but
with all you can do on the application layer these days in terms of
backup, snapshots, images and so forth I don't miss the extra features
for the midrange. When you start wanting to get into large-scale
replication you may miss it, but if you just want cheap storage on a
stick the price is very hard to beat.

You didn't specify how many users you will have on the wireless, I'm
assuming all 25 current users and wired. If you will have no more than
2-3 wireless users the recommended Linksys ap's would work fine.
However, if you are going to have more than 3 simultaneous users you
NEED to consider a more serious access point. 3com, HP and may others
make business class routers. I just wanted to throw out the point that
you really really don't want more than 2 or 3 simultaneous users on a
home class ap like a Linksys. Personal note, don't consider the Linksys
"business class" routers as a good candidate.

I agree with Mark. The Linksys works but the best I have done without
issues on one is 5 users and none of them were heavy users. I know for the
one I have at home when my wife is watching her shows online and I try to
