RE: Server 2008 GUID for backup devices

2009-01-14 Thread gsweers
Yep, only a C: Drive. Customer had their cousin setup the server and
when they got done with the wizards they couldn't figure anything else
out. He already manually joined about 20 machines to the domain and
imported each of their mailboxes, etc. Customer will not pay for us to
rebuild the server properly so now its patching it up. This is the last
part was their offsite backup, which does not support 2008 yet.

I also liked the vocabulary...Shook may have to roll to dictionary.com
though to understand it.

Well those of you running 2008 for sure know that the native backup
tools in 08 have been significantly altered and you can no longer
perform system state to "critical volumes" This presents a problem for
applications that replicate offsite by creating a systemstate file
locally and sending it off, or for clients that send systemstate volumes
to network locations for backup.

My specific question is.. "Does anyone know how to make Server 08

GUID volume to the OS. Subst command does not present a GUID for the
volume you map according to a WMI lookup of Win32_volume

Should work. Several years ago, when I was doing field tech work, I
had bought an "ATX to AT adapter", which basically was the ATX
connector and the AT connector, wired together appropriately, with a
wire broken out to run to the AT power switch (for the "soft power on"
in to the ATX supply). Worked fine, and it meant I only had to carry
one spare supply around with me for testing.

My step mom's system got Antivirus 2009 just after Christmas (only XP

manual cleaning to kill it and get AVG running. AVG updated then
immediately found it. I also ran the old spybot for giggles.

SO far so good.

get a cable from a bad AT supply, check if the correct wires are inserted in

Good afternoon,

I lost a volume on one of my NT servers the other day, and I can not
find a way to get it back. It is a non-fault tolerant striped set
created through Windows NT. It is not a hardware RAID. The other
array I can still access shows it's formatted as NTFS. The array
giving me troubles shows as "unknown format". All disks are present
and accounted for in Disk Administrator, and none of the drives have
any problems listed. It looks like NT just lost the settings for this
array. Of course, the data is not backed up.

Can I get this array back? Any utilities I can run against the disks
to find the configuration information? I'm currently downloading the
NT Resource Kit to see if I can find anything on there that might help.

2009-01-14 Thread Eric Brouwer

Thanks,

I know this is not the Vipre nor CounterSpy thread but wanted to get
feedback from others on this one.

We had a system that was running CounterSpy and had the latest patches
but the all wise user that was using it, somehow chose to installed
Spyware 2009 as they made the decision they were not protected. The
application installed and Counterspy was disabled. That is where it
began..

We tried some scans with the machine being up using CounterSpy, Vipre,
and Malwarebytes. We came across different issues. We made the
decision to pull the drive and run the scans from a host system with the
drive connected as a slave. Vipre found some issues and addressed them.
We then ran Malwarebytes and more malware was found including Spyware
2009. We reran Vipre but reported that all was clean. We ended up
using Malwarebytes and all was cleaned.

I understand that there is no silver bullet but I would think that if
Vipre found Spyware 2008, which was also on the system, it should have
atleast found Spyware 2009.

Thoughts.. Has anyone come across the Spyware 2008 / 2009 or Anti-Virus
2008 / 2009 family?

I'm leaning in that direction, but it would be easier on my users if they
could use their regular accounts.

Windows Media Player disables the screen saver when playing DVDs so that it
doesn't pop up in the middle of a movie. So it seems to me that a mechanism
exists to do this. It's just a matter of getting PowerPoint to behave the
same way...

I created a special user account for using PP that has no screensaver

the computer could be left and an untrusted person could then sit down at

Been running smoothly here. Have it both on a test desktop, and threw it on my
laptop. Both have been running smoothly for now. IE8 is too buggy for me,
installed FireFox. Office 2007 works with no problems. So far, I have not come
across any software that I use normally that does not run in Windows 7. Much
quicker boot time than XP/Vista on the same machine. Getting in the lower teens
for boot time on the desktop, low 20's on the laptop.

So... so far, so good.

We've had builds for about 4 months via TAP. Been running it on my main machine
for several weeks now.

The icon grouping thing takes a while getting used to (some ways it's faster,
but if you had pet ways of using the older-style taskbar, some things are
slower). Explorer doesn't lose folder column preferences anymore (thank
goodness). IE8 has a bunch of bugs (and the IE task bar icon randomly doesn't
display some tabs, which is really annoying). The positioning of the "show
desktop" in the bottom right corner is great (you can drag your mouse there)
unless you have a second monitor that extends your desktop to the right. Dunno
if it's my chipset drivers but I have a heap of problems with USB power after a
random number of sleep/resume cycles.

While working for a local small computer repair shop, we noticed the highest
failure rate from 160GB and 60GB IDE/SATA hard drives (all brands), and more
failures from Maxtor and Seagate compared to WD. The brand failure rate was
probably due to number of units sold. WD used to have a great RMA process, used
to get brand new drives as replacements, now get recertified (useless when
drive is DOA). Hopefully the high failures for consumer drives will not spill
over to the high end SCSI/SAS/FC drives.

trigger SMART even though SeaTools clearly showed defects.

I had two 1tb 7200.11 drives show up completely defective DOA from

these very loud clicks in operation.

I read somewhere that their quality has totally gone down the tubes ever

We're looking at a couple of options including getting a new print

Of course, in the past when we first installed our hcis, we just had two
flavors: Lexmark 2950 and HP4. Now, we've got about 8 or 9 different
HP models along with a Canon and some Ricoh's.

and more malware was found including Spyware 2009. We reran Vipre but reported
that all was clean. We ended up using Malwarebytes and all was cleaned.

I understand that there is no silver bullet but I would think that if Vipre
found Spyware 2008, which was also on the system, it should have atleast found
Spyware 2009.

Thoughts.. Has anyone come across the Spyware 2008 / 2009 or Anti-Virus 2008 /
2009 family?

I'm on TimeWarner cable and have it furnishing digital phone to the house
line and have a D-Link router that feeds a Vonage adapter (don't ask - it's
for a business line) as well as 3 other computers - one of them is a Windows
Home Server. When I run Internet speed tests, I typically come up 4-5 Mbps
and I'm getting similar results downstream of the Netgear device with the
others doing whatever they do. I haven't tested my LAN speed, but suspect
it's about what I'd get at the end of a CAT-5 cable.

I plan to try to put a Wireless Access Point on the Netgear device to
provide wi-fi to the downstairs once I play with it some more.

FW: DHCP

Yep, already tried the unauthorized/reauthorize process - no success.
And I don't wish to change the IP address of the box if I can avoid it -
too many static IP settings on server already point to this address for
DNS.

Be careful re-using IP addresses on DHCP servers. We had a problem
getting a DHCP server to *REALLY* be authorized when we re-used the
IP/name. I don't remember the details, just that we had problems with
it - your situation sounds similar enough that you might want to try
de-authorizing the server and re-authorizing it to see if that helps.

Would ISA2004 require some type of entry allowing DHCP requests to go to
the new machine?

Been running smoothly here. Have it both on a test desktop, and threw it
on my laptop. Both have been running smoothly for now. IE8 is too buggy
for me, installed FireFox. Office 2007 works with no problems. So far, I
have not come across any software that I use normally that does not run
in Windows 7. Much quicker boot time than XP/Vista on the same machine.
Getting in the lower teens for boot time on the desktop, low 20's on the
laptop.

We've had builds for about 4 months via TAP. Been running it on my main
machine for several weeks now.

The icon grouping thing takes a while getting used to (some ways it's
faster, but if you had pet ways of using the older-style taskbar, some
things are slower). Explorer doesn't lose folder column preferences
anymore (thank goodness). IE8 has a bunch of bugs (and the IE task bar
icon randomly doesn't display some tabs, which is really annoying). The
positioning of the "show desktop" in the bottom right corner is great
(you can drag your mouse there) unless you have a second monitor that
extends your desktop to the right. Dunno if it's my chipset drivers but
I have a heap of problems with USB power after a random number of
sleep/resume cycles.

I have been noticing quite a failure rate in Seagate drives as of
lately. A shame, they used to be amongst the best. Just in this past
two weeks I had a 500gb and 1TB 7200.11 take a dump. The 1TB didnt even
trigger SMART even though SeaTools clearly showed defects.

I had two 1tb 7200.11 drives show up completely defective DOA from
Newegg, No apparent shipping damage, and drives were well packed. Made
these very loud clicks in operation.

I read somewhere that their quality has totally gone down the tubes ever
since moving to Thailand.

2009-01-14 Thread Mike Gill
It's consumer level drives period. They all suck. I still believe Seagate
sucks the least. It's like the GHz race, but GB instead. Quality suffers.
Where I used to work a few years ago, we had about 30 CAD stations with WD
IDE drives. By the time I had replaced 2/3's or so over the course of a
year, I concluded WD sucks, and that IDE drives in general were just not
reliable. I bought 2940U2W cards and 18GB SCSI drives for all the machines.
Not one drive failure after that.

RE: DHCP

2009-01-14 Thread Webb, Brian (Corp)
Be careful re-using IP addresses on DHCP servers. We had a problem
getting a DHCP server to *REALLY* be authorized when we re-used the
IP/name. I don't remember the details, just that we had problems with
it - your situation sounds similar enough that you might want to try
de-authorizing the server and re-authorizing it to see if that helps.

This new DHCP server has the same IP as one that was "retired" but a
different name. Right now it's only configured with a single scope for
a different subnet, but the clients on that subnet keep going back to
one of the two original DHCP servers.

Would ISA2004 require some type of entry allowing DHCP requests to go to
the new machine?

Been running smoothly here. Have it both on a test desktop, and threw it

for me, installed FireFox. Office 2007 works with no problems. So far, I
have not come across any software that I use normally that does not run

Getting in the lower teens for boot time on the desktop, low 20's on the

I loaded win7 in a vm the other day (I got my hands on it on Wed), and
it took everything I pretty much *needed*. Quickbooks 9, Office 2007 etc
etc.

Sooo yesterday I dropped a new drive in and loaded it directly on my box
(quad 9950, Geforce 9600, 3gb ram, 2x22' dvi screens, asus onboard
audio/nic)

System came right up, Nvidia already has a driver in Windows Update,
MSN, Office, Quicbooks, Rocketdock, City of Heroes all work as expected.

A few apps aren't running right (I am on the 64bit where my vista was
32bit) - CutePDF, MagicDisc, MountISO (all 'driver' related stuff)
doesn't seem to load correctly.

IMGBurn works, haven't tried Nero 9 yet, but will look at that today.

I don't know about faster/slower/benchmarks, however, I think the added
desktop stuff while may take a little bit to get used to (grouping
icons, disappearing windows when you select stuff in toolbar) seems much
more efficient. The 'changing' desktop is pretty nice too.

The UAC has a gradiant scale. IE8 seems pretty good, the new 'private'
version of the browser looks promising. The 'home' sharing setup with
the keycodes is pretty neat, but I haven't tried it yet.

I would have to say overall, Im pretty impressed with the 'bet

I'm leaning in that direction, but it would be easier on my users if they
could use their regular accounts.

Windows Media Player disables the screen saver when playing DVDs so that it
doesn't pop up in the middle of a movie. So it seems to me that a mechanism
exists to do this. It's just a matter of getting PowerPoint to behave the
same way...

I created a special user account for using PP that has no screensaver

the computer could be left and an untrusted person could then sit down at

Perfect.. Years ago, I would use only IBM hard drives for both servers and
desktops. Then, probably around 2001 or 2002, I started to replace them
because I was having issues. mostly hard drive crashes.

I started to replace the hard drives with Seagate's hard drives. Took about
two to three years to complete (only replaced them when a server/desktop
crashed or during an O/S upgrade).

I really do not want to do through that again.

Same hear.. I always talked highly about their hard drives. But, so far have
not had any issues for alarm.

Firefox uses a different history database format, but you should be
able to copy the file(s) from one Firefox profile folder to another
and then just bring up the history in Firefox to view it. I don't
think Firefox keeps the files locked open all the time like MSIE does,
so it should be possible even "hot".

This new DHCP server has the same IP as one that was "retired" but a
different name. Right now it's only configured with a single scope for

Would ISA2004 require some type of entry allowing DHCP requests to go to

RE: Prevent Screen Saver in PowerPoint

2009-01-14 Thread Mike Gill
I created a special user account for using PP that has no screensaver
timeout or lock. It's also locked down from using network resources since
the computer could be left and an untrusted person could then sit down at
it.

Use a packet sniffer. Wireshark is free, and I believe Microsoft's
own Network Monitor still is, too. See what packets are getting to
the DHCP servers, and back.

If you have managed switches, you should be able to mirror the
port(s) your DHCP server(s) are plugged into to the sniffer computer.
If you can't do that, temporarily plug the DHCP server(s) into an
intermediate repeater, with the sniffer also plugged into the same
repeater.

Using IEhv you don't even have to snag the folder. Click file, Select

Re: PageFile error with new MS Update?????

2009-01-14 Thread Jon D
One of the templates gets laid right onto the root of C:\.
The directory on the network it's pulling from has restricted wite
access. So robocopy with the /SEC option copied the permissions from
that network directory to the entire C:\ drive.

Thus the pagefile could be read but not written to.

Very weird issue. The fact that it happened to users who just
installed the new windows update and rebooted made it that much more
confusing.

I'm just happy it didn't bluescreen the entire network. That was a
close one.
