RE: IPAD vs Android tablets

2010-12-07 Thread Ziots, Edward
Yep, Greg, that is very much the issue these days on the healthcare
side. I can't disagree at all accordingly. As long as the
practice/DR's are signing that they assume the risk/liability, you are
basically off the hook.

Not to worry, my customers beat me up much harder Z.

You have very good points regarding the security. A simple enough
method to mitigate it is not install Email on the device and require
them to use Outlook via the Terminal Server. RDP would be the method,
and yes if they stole the device, implanted a root kit, keylogger etc on
it they could obtain the information. We are looking at Authentication
tokens required to TS into it, but the vendors are small. Wyse has an
app, but we have not tested two-factor yet. Good thing its available on
Droid or Ipad. Doctors do get what they want, they drive the money to
the practice, but for all their yelling and complaining when the
Practice Admin says fine, this is what you now get paid, they start back
pedaling.. J In the end we can simply as we always do define the
risks/benefits, remind them of compliance and offer them
software/hardware to meet that compliance..but in the end its their
decision. Not mine.

Some practices enforce those policies, others choose not too. When it
hits the fan it will hit them in the pocketbook and I will waive my
signed document of disclosure and release of liability and help them
clean up the mess.

Is the traffic between the EMR site and the tablet encrypted? ( Proves
Confidentiality of the information being transferred between the client
and the EMR)? (IPSEC or TLS/SSLv3)

If emails get stored on the devices, then electronic communications
within the non-encrypted emails, could contain PHI/PII or other
sensitive company communications that if divulged to the public or a
malicious third party could bring about information disclosure, or
breach notification laws. Not trying to beat you up Greg, but just
because you say the users aren't sending information with HIPAA related
information anymore, doesn't mean they still aren't doing it. ( We all
know folks are ignorant of policies, and/or circumvent them for various
reasons)

Also, I am not sure there is any forensically sound data wiping
utilities for the IPAD/Iphone/ ( Other mobile device) therefore if they
obtain the device itself ( Physical Theft) its only a matter of time
that all the information on the device will be obtained. Either that or
a more sinister plot is to plant a rootkit on the device, or a backdoor
as a legit application, and re-introduce it back to the users and
monitor all the information crossing said device and gleam the
information form afar, thus having complete control over the device and
obtaining multiple different sets of information, credentials, to
conduct more nefarious deeds.

There has been plenty of attacks against RDP accordingly ( MITM, namely)
that could be brought to bear, but I would assume that's a low risk type
of attack, if they got the network between you and the EMR, you
basically toasty anyways.

Ok, so it happened again this morning. I have moved the DHCP server to our

Now all I need to do is move the printers. Anyone got a nice, easy way to

host my handsets off of a system running Asterisk on Debian 5.1 with FreePBX as
a frontend. (This is for my personal phone system and not the University.) If
you're interested in doing something similar I can forward you specs and
instructions on how to get everything running. You can also purchase relatively
low-cost hardware from Digium – their Switchvox line is Asterisk-based (they're
the maintainers for Asterisk) and is very configurable and easy to deploy.

For handsets I've always preferred Polycom hardware – the speakerphones are
superb – but you can use just about any SIP-compatible hardware or software to
do the job. If you wanted to go very cheap you could just buy everyone a USB
headset and use softphone clients to handle calls. Considering how low
Asterisk's hardware requirements are you could do a whole system in house for
about $2,000 – 10 Polycom handsets, an Intel Atom-based server (an Atom 330 or
550 CPU is a good choice being dual-core) with say 160GB of HDD space and 4GB
ram, and even a conference room phone if you wanted. Vendors like voipsuppy.com
have 10-pack bundles available and also pretty good prices on the single desk
handsets. A client of mine runs a law office, with multiple locations, off of a
similar setup.

Happy to help if this is a route that interests you.

Subject: Hosted VoIP recommendations

Hello gang,

We have a production facility with a small office that we are looking at hosted
VoIP for. Voice/data contracts are up for renewal and the PBX is sufficiently
outdated that it is no longer supported by the manufacturers (nor are the
handsets) so an all-in-one VoIP solution seems like s good bet.

We'd probably end up with 10 handsets.

I'm partial to Speakeasy/Megapath because I have been a customer of both in the
past and pretty happy with their data service, but I've also looked at 8x8,
TelCentris and Velocity.

Am I missing a big fish? Any comment on the suppliers above (or any other we
should look at) much appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric Peeters

Video conferencing solutions

2010-12-07 Thread Eric Brouwer
Greetings,

We are a management company managing 20+ properties and conduct weekly
conference calls with them. We'd like to start adding video. Is there an
inexpensive way to do this? Ideally, everyone would see the CEO speaking
for the most part, but have the video source switch to an individual
property if they are speaking. Kind of like follow the voice presentation.

Any low end solutions for this involving web cams and web based services?

Thanks!

CAD Workstation Spec

2010-12-07 Thread Stefan Jafs
I need to upgrade a few PC's running AutoDesk Inventor to Workstations,
question is how much horsepower is economically / practically needed?

How do I compare i5, i7 or Xenon processors in CAD situations?

RAM is pretty simple, Windows 7 64 bit probably 8 Gb should be ok.

A video card with 1 Gb of DDR3 ram should be ok I Think.

Any recommendations?

i5 if you are concerned about cost. Else, I would go with i7, but more RAM.

Sorry for the delay, been super busy. We use the Ergotron Neo-Flex carts. They
are very nice, they don't have a built in power strip but they have an optional
power strip mount with which you can mount a standard power strip to at least
the model we use do. We use the wideview workspace next to our dental chairs
with desktops mounted on them, they don't have to move very far.

  Folks,

I am looking for carts for laptops. Staff will be using the laptops to enter
data in our medical system. The carts will move from room to room during the
day and in storage at night. Something where staff would be standing, I think.
A built-in power strip would be nice.

  Suggestions?

RE: CAD Workstation Spec

I would go off the software requirements and compatibility list.
Usually the only thing that really makes a big difference is GPU type
and driver versions. There are big differences between video cards and
RAM isn't necessarily the deciding factor. You could spend $100 or
$4000 on a 1 GB Video card if you wanted. After you figure out the
specs required then upgrade the CPU and RAM beyond requirements if you
have budget left over.

RE: CAD Workstation Spec

2010-12-07 Thread Raper, Jonathan - Eagle
+1

We have an electronic procedural record keeping system for endoscopic and
colonoscopy procedures that is used for documenting the entire patient visit
from the time the appointment is scheduled to the time the procedure note is
signed off by the physician. Included in that system is high resolution image
capture. The image capture card cost significantly more than the workstation.
The specs for the image capture card were *TIGHT*, however the rest of the
specs for the workstation were, winXP, x amount of CPU, and x amount of RAM.
Nothing really mattered except for the imaging component, relatively speaking.
Focus on those needs, and what the critical app calls for, and I think
everything else will fall into place.

Re: CAD Workstation Spec

2010-12-07 Thread Mike Sullivan
We called our local AutoDesk rep and this is the priority they claim is
where you want to spend your money.

1. Processor
2. Memory
3. Hard Drive
4. Video

So, depending on your budget I would go for the Xeon or i7 with 8GB memory
(We actually are spec'ing 16GB on our systems since we are heavy on 3D) and
the new Seagate Barracuda XT drive if you can get it. We haven't had a
chance to get our paws on one yet.

Re: Video conferencing solutions

2010-12-07 Thread Roger Wright
We went with MegaMeeting for our monthly branch office meetings. Their Pro
Lite product allows us to have unlimited one-to-many or many-to-many video
conferences, and Desktop/Application sharing is an included option. The
interface isn't as elegant as WebEx but it's only about $15/month per seat.
The system works very well with common webcams - we selected Logitech
Quickcam 9000's and they've been solid.

For a free solution, look at www.yugma.com or www.dimdim.com.

RE: CAD Workstation Spec

2010-12-07 Thread Joseph L. Casale
Agreed,
I'm a Cad guy and unless you are opening very large assemblies and need the ram
as well, the best user experience will be achieved primarily through a good
video card.
That being said, hardware has come so far now, you don't usually need to spend
anywhere near what you did.

I have lost faith in Nvidia, and have been using ATI cards recently (all
variations) and they are doing well.

Check what your app is supported in, with CAD apps, it's not just being
"supported" that matters, but some cards don't work well with certain apps.

RE: CAD Workstation Spec

2010-12-07 Thread Mike Gill
You need to look at some of the more complex models your users are working
with and see where the bottle necks are. Read through the link Joseph sent
to get better acquainted with what you need to look for in terms of specific
brands and models of the different graphics cards.

Depending on budget, my preference would be Xeon. You can get a dual socket
motherboard and have a flexible base for starting with one CPU and adding a
second in the near future. If CPU power isn't likely to be an issue before
the next hardware refresh then an i7/i5 system may be fine. If you want the
6 core i7, you will want to get a board that has a LGA 1366 socket. You
should be able to judge RAM by what the users are currently doing, then add
an appropriate amount for growth. I would also use a fast SSD drive for the
OS.

And any CAD guy wall want a nice new pair of 24" or larger displays looking
back at them. ;) And they do all have one of these
  right? Right?

You need to look at some of the more complex models your users are working with
and see where the bottle necks are. Read through the link Joseph sent to get
better acquainted with what you need to look for in terms of specific brands
and models of the different graphics cards.

Depending on budget, my preference would be Xeon. You can get a dual socket
motherboard and have a flexible base for starting with one CPU and adding a
second in the near future. If CPU power isn't likely to be an issue before the
next hardware refresh then an i7/i5 system may be fine. If you want the 6 core
i7, you will want to get a board that has a LGA 1366 socket. You should be able
to judge RAM by what the users are currently doing, then add an appropriate
amount for growth. I would also use a fast SSD drive for the OS.

And any CAD guy wall want a nice new pair of 24" or larger displays looking
back at them. ;) And they do all have one of
these right? Right?

question is how much horsepower is economically / practically needed?

How do I compare i5, i7 or Xenon processors in CAD situations?
RAM is pretty simple, Windows 7 64 bit probably 8 Gb should be ok.
A video card with 1 Gb of DDR3 ram should be ok I Think.

Any recommendations?

No policy against it here, but I'm not that into decorating anyway.
Besides, the other guys I work closely with are JW's and they wouldn't

RE: Direct acces and multiple v-lans

2010-12-07 Thread Malcolm Reitz
You actually don't need IPv6 anywhere inside your network. The DirectAccess
server is doing IPv4<->IPv6 translations for you.

The downside of not enabling IPv6 on your servers is that the IPv4<->IPv6
translation is very compute-intensive. That means that, the more translation
the DA server is doing, the fewer connections it can support. So, more IPv6
support means fewer DA servers are needed.

I have IPv6 turned on for just our Windows 2008 servers and a couple of
2003 servers (just to test). The vast majority of our servers are running
2003 with IPv4 and are accessible via DirectAccess.

2010-12-07 Thread Terry Dickson
OK I have to chime in, a few years ago the IT dept all 6 of us we chastised for
not putting a wreath on our door, I had some old Mainframe Drive packs at home
so I took one apart. Pulled out the individual platters and we started adding
stuff to it. We have circuit boards from Floppy drives, Other SCSI and IDE
Hard Drives, We have a CPU, and some RAM on there. WE added a speaker some
other misc circuit cards we had out of failed systems. We then tied a bow on
top with some 9-track tape. Then after a few days someone suggested it needed
a mouse, so we added a dead mouse with the appropriate saying to it. Now it is
so requested they want us to build another one to put in a wreath contest this
year. So we are back scrounging our spare parts to build another because we
don't want to give up the original. That is about all the decorating we do
though.

I have to ask. Do you call your Birthday... Birthday or Holiday? Do you
call Halloween... Halloween or Holiday? Easter or Holiday? Why is it that
Christmas is being attacked? Christmas Celebrates the birth of Jesus.

Usually the people I find that cannot call Christmas, Christmas are
non-believers in Christ. I would then ask you if you should be working at a
company that ask something other from you?

Why do I call Christmas, Christmas... Just read Luke 2:8-20

A buddy and myself ran lights around our cubicles, and we've gotten several
others involved. We're having to call them "holiday" lights, so as not to
"offend" anyone. We also have a small, 3' fiber optic tree, and some
garland to finish it off.

Was just curious if you guys were allowed to do anything like that.

If you noticed in my original post, I put quotes around holiday...

I agree with your points, I just work in a place that is unionized, and if one
person complains, it can get way out of hand.

>>> "joho...@gmail.com"  12/7/2010 11:43 AM >>>

I have IPv6 turned on for just our Windows 2008 servers and a couple of 2003
servers (just to test). The vast majority of our servers are running 2003 with
IPv4 and are accessible via DirectAccess.

I'll third that, and for the record, I don't celebrate Halloween but I still
call it Halloween.
Why can't the non-believers at least call Christmas by Christmas. Still
doesn't change what they believe.

Here, they had a door decorating contest with the winner receiving lunch or
some prize like that.
We didn't participate, cause we have not talent, in the decorating area, that
is.

Re: Office decorations - Are they allowed for you?

2010-12-07 Thread Steven Peck
We don't need to proselytize your religious view here folks.

This is a techie list and the person that brought it up the issue also
claimed to be a victim. That falsely pretends that they are here. No one
on this list said it except the original poster which caused this echo
chamber.

We could then turn into a flame war about the actual origins of the
celebration date and other religious esoteric stuff. or we could say
happy holidays, merry christmas, happy hanaka, or whatever the heck you want
to say without the preachy, some group is a poor victim crap.

Thanks,

Happy (whatever the hell you want to call it) Steven

Who is stopping you from celebrating your chosen holiday? Certainly not me, so

It can't be permissions because that would stop anything from working.
Have you run the IEMSTEST tool from the Utility directory on the server? You

I've got a client that uses BESX 5.0.2 with SBS 2008 that isn't syncing
calendars after the Swing Migration to SBS 2008. Googling has me looking at
the permissions of the BESAdmin account, but I can't tell if this is correct:

[PS] C:\Windows\System32>get-mailboxserver ALLIANT01 | get-ADpermission -user BE
SAdmin | Format-List

User: AS2K3\BESAdmin

Everything else is working correctly, so I'm thinking this isn't it, but I
really can't tell. Are the permissions correct for this user? The other thing
I'm noticing is that there is NO information about the Calendar listed anywhere

Michael, you have a good point. I'm a Christ follower as well, and although I
celebrate Christmas, the commercialism does frustrate me. Go ahead, call me a
hypocrite...

In America, roughly $450 Billion is spent on Christmas and other holiday
shopping. Yes, Billion with a B.

Worldwide, it would take just $10 Billion to PERMANENTLY SOLVE the WORLD's
clean water supply problem.

So, we spend 45 times in one month (or two months) every year what it would
cost to provide clean drinking water to the entire world.

Doesn't that turn anyone's stomach? It turns mine.

Celebrate whatever holiday you want. Get enough people behind it and you might
even get the day off.

Who is stopping you from celebrating your chosen holiday? Certainly not me, so
party on.

You call it Christmas, that's great. My comment was meant for those that
insist on calling it something else cause saying Christmas seems to offend them.

Why can't the non-believers at least call Christmas by Christmas. Still
doesn't change what they believe.

Here, they had a door decorating contest with the winner receiving lunch or
some prize like that.
We didn't participate, cause we have not talent, in the decorating area, that

RE: OT: Office decorations - Are they allowed for you?

2010-12-07 Thread Ralph Smith
I agree with all these points about Christmas being called what it is
etc. etc. etc. But on a humorous note, a few years ago when the cashier
at a local department store wished me a merry Christmas, I replied (just
for the hell of it because I'm not Jewish) "Thanks!, And a happy
Hanukkah to you!" To which she replied, almost like she was embarrassed
"Oh no, I'm not Jewish!" I guess it goes both ways sometimes. And yes
I know this was an anomaly, I just thought it was funny.

Some years back, different company, HR stopped objecting to my group
saying "Christmas" in exchange for me not going absolutely batshit crazy
over any and all mentions of any other holiday, such as diwali, etc.

Was just curious if you guys were allowed to do anything like

Fast hard drives only help. A pair of Velociraptors or better yet, SAS
drives would be great. The SSD is just more modern tech. Bet hey, why not
stipe a pair of those right? But even that would be lame. This is where you

I would also use a fast SSD drive for the
OS.

And any CAD guy wall want a nice new pair of 24" or larger displays looking
back at them. ;) And they do all have one of these
  right? Right?

I need to upgrade a few PC's running AutoDesk Inventor to Workstations,
question is how much horsepower is economically / practically needed?

How do I compare i5, i7 or Xenon processors in CAD situations?

RAM is pretty simple, Windows 7 64 bit probably 8 Gb should be ok.

A video card with 1 Gb of DDR3 ram should be ok I Think.

Any recommendations?

Re: Office decorations - Are they allowed for you?

2010-12-07 Thread Jon Harris
Try working at a public agency with a none christian. One place I
worked had a long standing (>15 year) tradition of a party with donations to
a worthy cause instead of gifts. None christian took over as head and
tradition was stopped. It seems he did not like the groups to get the
donations the previous couple of years (prior to his taking over). Party
kind of died as no one wanted to step on his toes. He still wanted the tree
in the front office but wanted the STAFF to pay for a real tree instead of
using the artificial that someone had donated. Most said no thanks.
Donations can only been given to Ronald McDonald House and most of the staff
resent having the cause dictated by someone that does not donate.
