I remember trudging through that blizzard with a pocket full of FORTRAN punch
cards at Michigan State to the computer building to see if my program would run.

Yup, the Blizzard of ’78. I was 6 also (well, 5, now that I think about it. I
wouldn’t turn 6 until April of ’78 and the blizzard was in February) and I
remember my father opening up the garage door, and with the way the snow had
drifted, it ust COVERED the entire opening of the dooor. The door was wide
open, and the garage was still dark.. lol

We just installed it to replace an Overland tape drive that is old and
antiquated. From what I have seen (being a new employee) it looks slick.
Easy to configure and looks easy to restore. Time will tell if it is really
as good as it looks.

The one issue we are having is a server located in the DMZ can not be
installed remotely. I'm sure it's a port that needs opening but have yet to
find which one it is. Anyone know?

In re: update - direct access plus NAP.

I have been fighting with direct access, cisco anyconnect and logmein.
No one in my area can help me implement Forefront Direct connect with UAG.
Cisco is very pricey. Logmein is okay but it is manual to each pc.

What do you guys do to make sure remotes are up to dates as far as windows
updates, virus patterns as well as adobe and other updates?
How do you handle terminated remote users to lock access to their pc/laptop?
And slightly off topic but how do you handle smartphones with email and

2011-01-17 Thread greg.sweers
If you purchase Logmein Central, you can create an MSI that you can deploy via
GP, scripting, etc..

Each MSI can deploy those machines to a specific group. Works well we have
well over 500 PC's from all over that just automatically join to the group.

RE: How do you handle pushing updates to remote users (vpn connectivity only)

2011-01-17 Thread greg.sweers
Sorry second part..

We have a Managed Services agent that monitors everything and can push updates,
script, etc..

Smart phones can be mostly controlled from either Exchange or Blackberry.
While BB is the only device you can really control completely, you can set
policies with Exchange for a decent number of devices (Varies on OS and brand)
On android, we use Touchdown to allow kill commands to wipe the phone and SD
card, allows for more robust syncing as well than the native google mail app.
Iphone supports remote kill and basic security.
Havent tested new Windows phone
BB we use Bes Express (Free version) does virtually everything the client
needs..requires more management.

In 1978 I remember a really big blizzard, jumping off the roofs of houses into
snow piles, and snowmobiling - oh, and best of all, no school for a WEEK
straight because they couldnt clear the roads (in Cambridge, MA).

I was 6, and that's my memory highlight!

Cannot delete files

2011-01-17 Thread jesse-r...@wi.rr.com
I have a user's roaming profile directory located on a Windows 2008 server
I cannot get rid of. I've been able to delete everything in the directory
except 4 files in a certain subdirectory called Recent.

I tried taking ownership from GUI and from command line (via takeown.exe_
with no success. I keep getting, Unable to set new owner on 'filename'
Access is Denied.

The files and/or Recent are NOT opened/used. When going to the security
tab, it also says I don't have permissions to view the object's security
properties.

All 4 of the files which I cannot take ownership of or delete are .lnk
files (They showup in folder view as a type of Shortcut).

Any thoughts on how to get rid of these things?

RE: Cannot delete files

2011-01-17 Thread Paul Hutchings
I've found that often rebooting the server will fix this - seems to be
down to some odd sort of lock on the files (it won't show in Server
Manager though).

Also sometimes deleting from the console from the command line using the
8.3 filename(s) seems to work.

Re: Cannot delete files

2011-01-17 Thread Andrew S. Baker
I find that this almost always happens when there is a remote lock on the
file, so the deletion is 98% processed. :)

Try to ensure that there are zero file handles open to that folder or its
parent via the HANDLE utility from SysInternals. If there is, and the
process holding it open is anything OTHER than System, you can shutdown or
kill the process to finish off the delete operation.

If the process is System, however, only a reboot will finish it off.

The can't take ownership error is a red herring.

file, so the deletion is 98% processed.

Re: Weird Windows Explorer issue...

2011-01-17 Thread Rene de Haas
Yes, I've seen it with outlook temp files. Windows Explorer doesn't show
everything even if you tell it to show hidden files.
Try with a different filemanager, like for instance my favorite Total
Commander. It's shareware, you can try for free and it's great. No I am not
connected, just like the program.
Also tell it to look for hidden files.
Maybe then you will see it.

I go back to Windows Explorer, go to that path/folder, and it is apparently

No, the file is not hidden (at least by file attribute).

Your computer is configured to prevent you from using this computer. Please try another computer.

2011-01-17 Thread Angus Scott-Fleming
Situation: Windows XP SP3, WORKGROUP setup **_NOT DOMAIN **... I
tried replacing a personal license of ZoneAlarm Security Suite with VIPRE
Enterprise on a roving laptop which only occasionally comes back to the
home office and in fact is in Mexico most of the time. The user told me he
banks online with Banamex, and Banamex requires that he have Ahnlab
security software installed.

According to the Banamex page on the Ahnlab software, the software only
scans memory and only when the user goes to the bank site:

* Further Information - AhnLab:
https://www.bancanetempresarial.banamex.com.mx/englishdir/bankhelp/hlp_ahnlabinfo.htm
or http://tinyurl.com/47kfkak

That page also says the user needs to have AV software installed as well as
Ahnlab software.

However, after I removed ZoneAlarm Security Suite and installed VIPRE
Enterprise 4, the first time I tried to scan a questionable file (a binary file
named d61335c0.txt in c:\windows\system32\E38489\) by right-clicking the
file and choosing Scan with VIPRE, the system locked hard with a System
is busy, Switch / Retry / Cancel dialog in front of the VIPRE splash screen.
No matter how many times I clicked [Switch] or [Retry] or [Cancel] or [X], it
came back to the dialog. When I turned the system off and back on, none of
the logins except the main local Administrator account worked -- from the
Welcome screen or from Ctrl-Alt-Del they all gave me an error dialog that
said Your computer is configured to prevent you from using this computer.
Please try another computer. All the googling I have done suggests this
should be a DOMAIN error, but this computer is in Workgroup mode and has
NEVER been associated with a domain.

I resolved the problem by using System Restore back to before I installed
VIPRE, but any new accounts I add give me the same annoying Your
computer is configured to prevent you from using this computer. Please try
another computer. error dialog.

In my googling I noticed that a number of international banks, especially in
Korea, are starting to require Ahnlab's software, so I expect this issue will
not
go away. This client has a large number of laptops which roam to Mexico, so
I will probably have to deal with this again.

The user had to leave with the computer to travel home to Mexico, but I was
able to install and test LogMeIn on it so I should have remote capabilities.
Has anyone here ever run into ANYTHING like this?

FWIW the following Ahnlab software is installed on the computer (not sure
which modules are actually required by the bank):

* Ahnlab Speedup 1.0.0.9
* AhnlabASP Product Integrated Uninstaller
* Ahnlab MyFirewall 2.0
* Ahnlab MyKeyDefense 2.0
* Ahnlab Online Security
* Ahnlab Smart Update i

I also noticed that both the Windows Firewall and Ahnlab MyFirewall were
running at the same time. The user had no problems before VIPRE and
Ahnlab got in a fight, so I don't know if that is related. If Ahnlab only
kicks in
when the user access Banamex sites, then its MyFirewall should not be
active most of the time.

Again, ideas welcome. Unfortunately I only have limited access to the
problem machine, so I'm both looking for other users who have encountered
Ahnlab and other users who have encountered this extremely wierd account-
lockout problem.

TIA for any help.

2011-01-17 Thread Richard Stovall
I have experienced the dreaded Vipre system is busy thing more than a few
times (major PITA, BTW, if anyone is listening), but I have not had the
subsequent lockout problem.

Wild-a$$ guess here, but is it possible that this laptop was upgraded from
2000 to XP? On XP and Win7 machines I glanced at, the group policy setting
mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285665 doesn't exist, so I
assume its a 2000-specific setting. You could fire up gpedit.msc and check.

Also, is it definitely your *computer* is configured, and not your
*account* is configured...? The only hit I get on the former is your post
at Spiceworks.
